Imagine-1I am such a big fan of the "George Harrison" album, that when I initially looked at the title of this post, I assumed that I would vote for GH. But, upon looking at the song by song matchup, I had to vote for Imagine. As I've said before, take out "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier", and this 4 track lineup is, for me, maybe the best Beatles solo "EP" ever!!! Hey, maybe that can be a future game...vote off songs from an album to create the ultimate fantasy EP! As far as George's side goes, I have always liked "Faster", but this side is a little too soft for me, if that makes any sense. While I think all of these songs are "good", I just don't get jazzed thinking about listening to this side. Maybe with a bottle of wine and a dark sweet lady by my side though.... . Now, if Imagine-1 were up against GH-1, my vote might have been different.

I suspect this to be a close one. I'll do it cross-country running style: 1. Imagine 2. Your Love Is Forever 3. Faster 4. Jealous Guy 5. Crippled Inside 6. If You Believe 7. Soft Touch 8. Dark Sweet Lady 9. It's So Hard 10. I Don't Want To Be A Soldier
GH wins 26-29 as low score wins in XC running.

IMAGINE, Side 1
I really like GH-2 and "Your Love Is Forever" may be my favorite song among this lot. Yet I-1 is a great Side of music, among the elite of solo Beatles.
Like many, I grew tired and burned out on "Imagine" and resented its near monopoly on John Lennon's legacy. I am back with a fury on this song and if one can separate the song from the hype and focus on the sincere, wistful thinking then it regains its power and grace. Yoko constantly citing it, reciting it and regurgitating it is a big part of its problem.
Get past that, shut out that noise (and baby clothes) and then you can look right into the torn, contradictory but ultimately good soul of John Lennon!
If anything, I'm burned out now on "Jealous Guy" and the sappy string arrangement but I still like the vulnerability and confessional tone of it. Everything else on I-1 is first rate though I grant that one needs to be in the "zone" to really dig "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier." Maybe being in a trance is a better word than zone. ;D
I created a firestorm last Round with my observation that there are some really stupid lines in "Faster"(like believing a world-class Formula One driver builds a championship car from scrapes found in a garage). Songs 2 through 4 on GH-2 are superb though. "If You Believe" is pleasant but being pleasant ain't good enough when going against Lennon's Imagine-1.
Sorry George, but you did make it a game with this nice album Side in which you ended the 1970's on a very up note!

Now: I'm a George Harrison tragic, but I'm voting for Imagine 1 here.
Let me explain: GH2 is OK: the first three tracks I like a lot. Track 4 is ... fair. Track 5 is soporific. But the overall impression is ... it's OK.
Imagine Side 1 has something about it, although some of the songs are iffy. It's So Hard is a try-hard, but a failure as a tough song. Jealous Guy is pathetic. Imagine I've never particularly liked. Crippled Inside has a nice groove, and Soldier I like to listen to, as it's very "mantric". But there is effort here, and an attempt to make statements about himself, and humans in general.
And looking back, Imagine is the last Lennon album that is widey well thought of, and side 1 is its better side. Forty years ago, almost - heck, out of sheer respect I must give it to John.

I got to thinking that with this tourney IMAGINE will ultimately fall for me because there is a song I dislike on each side. "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier" from this side and "How Do You Sleep" (my least favorite song ever) on the other side. Take away those and I really like this album. If we could take a top 7 songs from the album, this one would go further. "Imagine", "Gimme Some Truth", "Jealous Guy", "Crippled Inside", "Oh Yoko", "Oh My Love" and "How" would likely go final 4 for me with BAND ON THE RUN, RAM, and ALL THINGS MUST PASS if we just pick the top 7 songs from the album. But we aren't, we are doing sides and IMAGINE will be lucky to get any more votes from me.

IMAGINE, Side 1I won't waste my time with this, you have JL at his best, and GH nearly at his worst (*Somewhere In England* was worse still). IMO, this album lacks melody's (melodyless? is that the word.. ) On GH-2, the large chunk of ballads near the end of the album, the last four songs, that is. They're all nice-sounding and all, but they all seem rehashed from past glories, and very boring....

I also went for Imagine S-1 , all the songs are good if not classics except for It's So Hard although the singing is good.
GH-2 has two songs I really like, Fatter and You're Love is Forever so I give the nod to JWOL

Of course, given your low opinion of it overall, it might not help in your assessment of it. JcS

If I go to the points, GH could pull an upset. I love this LP and immediately bought the remastered CD. It has aged well, and as I've said before, I still remember seeing it brand new and unexpected in the LP bin at Nichols Department store. There was never any info in RS magazine that he was doing a new album.
But Imagine side 1 has two major 10s in the title track and Jealous Guy, a nice copy of Black Dog Blues with Crippled Inside, and another blues cut Hard. My least favorite- Soldier captures the Plastic Ono sound from POB so I won't totally dismiss it.

IMAGINE gets my vote, but just barely. While I don't like the sentiments of part of "Imagine," I can't deny it is a great work. I like "Jealous Guy" except for the whistling. "Crippled Inside" and "It's So Hard" are passable filler. I'm not as down on "Soldier" as some are, but it is clearly the weak spot on the album side.
Ending on a down note could have opened an opportunity for GH 2 to take this side, but it just never caught fire. I don't dislike anything on it, but it lacks the high points on GH 1 that it would need to beat a side like IMA 1.
So it didn't.
