ALL THINGS MUST PASS, Side 1 vs. BAND ON THE RUN, Side 1
ALL THINGS MUST PASS, Side 1
1. "I'd Have You Anytime" (George Harrison/Bob Dylan) 2:56 2. "My Sweet Lord" 4:38 3. "Wah-Wah" 5:35 4. "Isn't It a Pity (Version 1)" 7:08
BAND ON THE RUN, Side 1
1. "Band on the Run" 5:10 2. "Jet" 4:06 3. "Bluebird" 3:22 4. "Mrs Vandebilt" 4:38 5. "Let Me Roll It" 4:47
The first of the two Paul vs. George matches, and it's a doozy.

All Things, Side 1. From the opening song, which is so un-Fab-like with George seeming to declare "not a Beatle anymore"; to the huge gamble of an open unambiguous declaration of love for god; onto the sheer "wall" of a rock classic; to finally resting on a plea for - well, love and tolerance - we know that this is a masterpiece.
Four excellent songs, varied in style and subject matter: but seeming to say "Everyone, this is George Harrison". Magnificent. And to think there's a better side to come!!
BOTR Side 1 Another pop record from Paul, better than some, not as good as others. Ho hum.
Off to vote, brothers.

Both of thee sides should advance further.
ATMP is the cream of the cream, 4 fantastic songs, you couldn't have a better side.
BOTR1 is amazing. But it drops from great to good midway through, (and I think Let Me Roll It is kinda meh, though I understand a lot of posters love it). I still love this side but not very much can touch the best side of probably the best solo Beatles albums.
I'm not voting against BOTR1. But ATMP earns my vote more, and gets it.

"Band on the Run" and "Jet" as a two-song EP side top ATMP 1 -- which is great, but not as good as Band 1.

Very hard choice, I went for George because I think it's his best and very consistent quality.
Bluebird and Mrs Vanderbilt are not as good to me now as when I first heard them, the rest is top notch Paul though but 4-3 to George.

I've not voted yet, but those are the two weak links on Side 1 of BOTR for me. I also count "Wah-Wah" as a clunker on ATMP 1. JcS

ALL THINGS MUST PASS, Side 1
This will be interesting. The BOTR Army here will be harder pressed than they have been thus far in this tourney.
It must have blown you fans away in 1970 when you played ATMP Side 1 for the first time and had four George songs in a row.
It must have made many say, "Wow, this feels right." It might not have been a total surprise as George outdid John on Abbey Road and absolutely blew Paul out of the water there if you compare Hari's two songs to Paul's two Side 1 songs.
I like much of BOTR-1 but "Bluebird is so damn boring and "Mrs Vandebilt" is a borderline novelty song to me. The other three are very good but rather dated production-wise.

At last a match that requires some serious thinking. I won't vote yet, though I am leaning towards BOTR.

Wow, I am shocked at the voting and comments so far. I love ATMP, but to me sides 2 and 3 are the standout sides. Side 1 is better than side 4, but I never really considered side 1 a "great" side. "I'd Have You Anytime" is a good opener, but not great. "My Sweet Lord" is a catchy single, but George would do better. "Wah Wah" does rock, but is too long. "Isn't It A Pity" is a song a lot of people rave about, but I find it a bit boring (Of course having two versions doesn't help). Does have good lyrics, but is way too long (a Harrison weakness).
BOTR side 1 however, is a fantastic side of music. One of my all-time favorites. The title track is a multi-part musical masterpiece. "Jet" is Paul in peak rocking form. "Bluebird" is a pleasing melodic interlude with some nice horns. "Mrs. Vanderbilt" is carefree Paul brimming with confidence and energy. "Let Me Roll It" I don't go as crazy for as some people, but it has a memorable riff.
Song for song Band On The Run is much stronger than My Sweet Lord and Jet out rocks Wah Wah. I'll give Paul's remaining trio a slight edge over George's remaining pair and it is really an easy vote for me.
BOTR SIDE 1 is easily the superior side.

BOTR
ATMP1, with the exception of Wah Wah, is a bit flaccid.

ALL THINGS MUST PASS, Side 1.
We all have different opinions, but I've got to scratch my head at people not digging the wild and raunchy WAH WAH, or picking on the #1 Smash hit, MY SWEET LORD, or calling ISN'T IT A PITY "boring".
I do like every song here to one degree or another, on both sides. But I voted for ATMP instead of BOTR because, while I do think BOTR S-1 is a GREAT side and this is a very tough match here --- I decided George gets the nod because he says a lot more of substance with his material here overall than Paul does (not counting WAH WAH, which is just nonsensical fun). And also because while Paul's BLUEBIRD is pleasant, it's more cheese from Paulie again.

I may have been a little hard on those songs because I really do like them all. I think "Wah Wah" is the song that most benefits from the "wall of sound" production and the horns are great. Shorten it a bit and it benefits. "My Sweet Lord" is a great single, but just a bit short of "Band On The Run" along with George's own "What Is Life" and "Give Me Love" in my book. And "Isn't It A Pity" I probably should have worded it "becomes boring". I really do like it as the lyrics are outstanding. It is movingly sung with great guitar. It just goes on a couple minutes too long and the inclusion of the second version still baffles me. But I still easily take BOTR side 1 and ATMP sides 2 and 3 over ATMP side 1.

I couldn't disagree more, I love Wah Wah as a song but for me the production almost kills it, it becomes headache inducing.

ATMP, Side 1
It holds up better for me than BOTR Side 1. George's four entries here are top notch. Even though My Sweet Lord has been around for 40 years now as a classic rock staple, and I have my moments where I tune out a bit, it still has a majestic quality.
Jet is my favorite track on BOTR Side 1. After that, BOTR. The rest falls way down the hill.

So close- have to go to points
ALL THINGS MUST PASS, Side 1
1. "I'd Have You Anytime" (George Harrison/Bob Dylan) 10 best opener of any solo record with the possible exception of Band on the Run. 2. "My Sweet Lord" 8.5 this record is so fine. Do lang Do lang…. 3. "Wah-Wah" 9 It’s made by drums from Ringo Starr… 4. "Isn't It a Pity (Version 1)"10 long, but to me epic
BAND ON THE RUN, Side 1
1. "Band on the Run" 10 best opener of any solo record with the possible exception of I’d Have You Anytime 2. "Jet" 10 I think I recently said it is not a personal favorite- but has all the elements of an Arena Rock hit 3. "Bluebird" 9 nice vibes- nothing like Blackbird 4. "Mrs Vandebilt" 9 5. "Let Me Roll It" 9.5
A virtual tie, but BOTR gets the edge as My Sweet Lord has a “steroid” tinge to it.

This one could be a blood bath as we get to the cream of the crop. Gotta' go with George, three of his great great songs here. BONR is obviously Macca's commercial peak. But there's more soul in those Harrison songs. Weird, haunted, celestial music from George. As opposed to great pop from Paul. Pick yer poison.

Well, I just broke the tie and I'm sure you're wondering why I chose BOTR over ATMP. Sorry, George - I LOVE you; however, I think overall, side 3 of ATMP is my favorite. I love BOTR and Paul ROCKS on it in places. He played most of these songs in concert and they were absolutely fabulous! So by a smidge, BOTR wins. JCV

Great opening couple of tracks for BOTR. ATMP good as it is overall does not have enough to power past Macca.

I went with ATMP 1. The strength of "Isn't It A Pity" tipped the scales in favor of George. As I said earlier in the thread, neither side is perfect ("Bluebird" and "Mrs. Vandebilt" for Paul, "Wah-Wah" for George are weak tracks). Both open with nice one-two punches, and I'd give a slight edge to Paul on those pairings, but only slight.
