Hi everyone, I am interested to know what the experts here think. Yesterday in a local antique shop I found a pile of original Beatles monthly magazines consecutively numbered from #18 (February 1965) through to #58 (May 1968). Of course I flipped out when i saw them - in excellent condition and bought the lot. I paid $250 New Zealand dollars for the lot. This equates to about 90 pounds or US$130. What I want to know is did I get a good deal? I can say that they have provided me with hours of fantastic reading already - and I've only got through the first ten! Seeing the views and interpretations of fans, the media and of course the Beatles themselves in the 1960's with all the hindsight knowledge we now have, is fascinating to say the least. I'd be interested to know what others think about my purchase

Hopefully these are the originals from the 60's, or they could be the reissues that came out between 1976 to the early 90's. The reissues would have had an extra cover and pages over the reproduction of the 60's Beatles Book. Still, I think you did well.

Even if they're the reissues, 40 issues for about $130 US is about what I paid for the reissues individually when they came out. You should check to see which they are, though. If they're the originals, you made a fantastic deal.

And at the risk of sounding corny, look at the pleasure your purchase has already brought you. That alone would seem to justify the purchase.

Hi again, Thanks for your views. Yes, they are definitely the originals not the reissues. They are in pristine condition too (about three quarters are in mint condition), found in a garage. I thought I'd made a good deal but you have confirmed it. And yes John, you are right, the hours of pleaure they have given me makes it worth it already.

'fun is the one thing that money can't buy...'
Sounds like your purchase has already paid you back with interest.
Enjoy!

I'm still getting through them! One of the things I am loving is some of the articles that were written right in the middle of events that we now know are crucial in the Beatles story. The perspectives and comments from the Beatles themselves make for some fascinating reading (eg The stories written while they were in India with the Maharishi...before the big bustup). But also some of the more trivial articles too...heres an interesting snippet of what I mean (its a transcript of a conversation between Paul and George in June 1966); George: There's a rumour going around that The Rolling Stones will retire if The Beatles get to number 1 with "Paperback Writer". Paul: Yes, I know Ringo's putting that one round. Of course it's quite true. George: Really? Paul: Yes, Mick told me so himself. George: When? Paul: I think they said they would retire in 1997. Something like that. George: Good. I'll record "Paint It Black" as a multi-tracked sitar solo in 1998. For our Christmas Fan Club Record. And you can hold me to that folks! Amusing at this distance isn't it?

I used to get the mag sent to my home. It was a great day when after school I'd find the latest issue in my letterbox. Back then of course - the 80s - that's where I got most of my latest Beatles news. It's hard to imagine that now, what with the internet and all...
