I really don't consider myself part of the BOTR "army", but.....
While "What is Life" is probably my favorite George single of all time and "If Not for You" is just gorgeous to my ears, "Behind that Locked Door" is a bit of a snooze and "Run of the Mill" is just that....run of the mill.
Other than "Mamunia", which actually has grown on me upon listening to the remastered version of BOTR, the rest of side two is a classic. Like JoeyS, I love "No Words", due to a great blending of Paul and Denny's vocals (and, I guess, Linda's too). "Helen Wheels' guitar intro is one of my favorite intros to any Beatles or post-Beatles song. PLW (DTM) may have been a lark to impress Dustin Hoffman, but it is another example of Paul's brilliance is patching different songs and sounds together. And, yes, I plead guilty to being one of those in the "regiment" who worships the crescendo of "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five."

I find BOTR2 a bore, except for Helen Wheels and 1985. They are good songs, arranged and played well. But no more than that.
ATMP2 I like a lot, and yet I consider it to be the weakest of the four All Things album sides! What Is Life is of course excellent - a quite pulsating song; it is one of those songs that you must hear to a finish once you've started! If Not For You (as I've said before) is a good song, but I don't like George's arrangement too much.
Locked Door and Mill are interesting songs. Run Of The Mill is about lost friendship and perhaps even betrayal. The acoustic uninterrupted flow of the song stands in contrast to its theme, conjuring an image of resigned sadness: but the singer has the strength to carry on.
Behind That Locked Door is a song to, and for, Bob Dylan. Gently, it prods, pleads, and advises Dylan to regain the confidence he seemed to have lost: Bob, you still have something to say. But in classic Hari fashion, the song can also be seen as directed to anyone in a similar position - we want you, we need you , we love, and you still have a lot to offer.
And sandwiched between these two gentler songs is the sometimes heavy Let It Down. I often wonder if the song mirrors the ebb and flow of lovemaking ...
I don't expect ATMP2 to win this tournament - there are far stronger lurking in the shadows. But here and now, I think George Harrison has more to say, is articulate when he says it, and trumps Paul McCartney lyrically.

A tough matchup. "What Is Life" is the best song on either side, just ahead of "1985". "Run Of The Mill" is my next favorite and one of my favorite lyrics. I'll rank that ahead of "Picasso's Last Words", a fantastic musical creation. "Helen Wheels" is the standout rocker, so that ranks just ahead of "Let It Down". The Dylan/Harrison "If Not For You" I like more than the McCartney/Laine combo of "No Words". The acoustic "Mamunia" and countryish "Behind That Locked Door" I'll call a draw. So with that in mind, my vote goes to ATMP side 2.

The Dylan/Harrison "If Not For You" I like more than the McCartney/Laine combo of "No Words". If Not For You is a total Dylan song - it's I'd Have You Anytime that is the Dylan/Harrison effort. McCabe

ALL THINGS MUST PASS, Side 2
"Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" is a great song but it is the only one on BOTR-2. "Mamunia" and "No Words" never fail to cure my insomnia. "Helen Wheels" can sometimes sound fantastic to me but most of the time it sounds like Paul's other fake rockers, those songs that Paulie thinks rock but don't and examples of those are "Call Me Back Again," "I've Had Enough," "Angry," and "Get Out of My Way"(there are many more).
In Dec. 2010, I was literally in a car crash while hearing for the millionth time on Sirius Satellite Radio's Band On The Run Radio the lame story behind "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)." Good thing I was on the preferred highway because I didn't have to admit to the other side's claims adjuster that I relieved a lot of frustration of hearing that stupid anecdote yet again by smashing into the side of her insured's vehicle!
"Run of the Mill" is a great song and has more thoughtfulness in it than in all of a certain bass player's solo catalog. The only song on ATMP-2 I am indifferent to is "If Not For You." Man, of all the Dylan songs George could have covered. "What Is Life" is great; in a perfect world that would have been the monster hit off ATMP and not MSL because George didn't get sued for WIL.
My policy of no longer voting for Paul is made easy when the other Side is much better. ;D

ATMP2
A very strong side, whereas BOTR2 is weakened by the inclusion of Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five and DOESN'T HAVE HELEN WHEELS ON IT.

This is an extremely difficult vote for me, because I think both sides here have only ONE great song each (WHAT IS LIFE for George and NINETEEN EIGHTY FIVE for Paul) and then some filler, and maybe one or two other pleasant songs.
Neither side here is a favorite of mine in total ... it's hit and miss for both so they're evenly matched. But I think I will vote for ALL THINGS MUST PASS this time, only because I like more off this side than I do Paul's. A problem though is that I feel NINETEEN EIGHTY FIVE is the best song of all these here.... but it's only one song and can't make a whole side worthwhile.

BAND ON THE RUN, Side 2

total 31
Great side of ATMP over a good (but much weaker than side 1) side. Never liked Picasso, the rest of BOTR is great. First 3 sides of ATMP are among the very best of the solo catalogue.
I might have voted for BOTR 1 over this, not sure...But in the present matchup, my vote goes to George.

This requires some thinking. Both fine sides. Both have two songs that I think are among their best, (No Words, 1985, What is Life and Run of the Mill), a song I really like (Helen Wheels, If Not For You) and two songs I don't like as much as the rest (Mamunia, Picasso's, Behind That Locked Door and Let It Down).
So, what to do? I'll probably vote for George, just because of the lyrics of Run Of The Mill, which I love to no end. Also, HW isn't supposed to be there, right? That was not Paul's intention.

More comments: 1. I know Dylan wrote "If Not For You", but George sings and performs, thus my reasoning for calling it Dylan/Harrison 2. As far as I'm concerned "Helen Wheels" is on side 2. Just like MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR is a full album now and not a double EP, like originally intended. 3. Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves the lyrics to "Run Of The Mill"!

Joey's Solo LP Tourney has really made me love ATMP again. I loved it when George re-issued it in 2000 or thereabouts but then I get away from it for years at a time, well maybe not that long. I still view it as a great double album with a bonus jam album but man George sure had a big statement to make right off the bat. I probably will always love Cloud Nine most among George's solo albums simply because I was a fan when it was released and actually lived through the excitement of those days when George made a huge comeback even though George himself hated that description as he made clear repeatedly on Rockline.

I still view it as a great double album with a bonus jam album .
Well that's how it was marketed...
But I have seen it called, "George's triple album tour de force" or "George's triple album magnum opus." Yeah, there are three records in there but only two were important to me. Hopefully George did treat "Apple Jam" as a bonus. I am going by what I have read through the years.

It was marketed as a triple album at the time. I am sure George intended Apple Jam to be a bonus, but the box was priced at about 2.5 x normal single album price.

My recollection was that it was priced at the cost of 2 albums in the USA. ABBEY ROAD was at $6.98 list and $5.47 discounted. I seem to recall that ATMP was priced at $10.97 in the local discount stores, but I could be wrong. JcS

I recall my copy of ATMP came with a sticker advertising 2 LP's plus a bonus Apple Jam.
The price also relects the neat-o packaging and poster.

I don't think either of these sides are that good ATMP rapidly runs out of steam after the second track. BOTR just about keeps it head above water and ends with a great song.
