This is as easy as they come in this tourney--including SJ against IMAGINE. Paul served up some awful tripe on side 2, with only "Single Pigeon" being worth the time and money. On the other hand, George just knocked it out of the park with the first side of the self-titled album, with a fantastic start and finish (nice to have on vinyl album sides) and solid middle.

Got to go with the under-rated GEORGE HARRISON in this contest. As to RRS-side 2, I agree with JoeyS that "Single Pigeon" is the best track. I like all of the medley except "Hold Me Tight" (and what's with the recycled Beatles song title?). The best you can say about "Loop" is that Paul is trying something different and uncommercial. Unfortunately that doesn't mean it is good. "When The Night" is extremely mediocre. As for GH, "Love Comes To Everyone" is an excellent opener. I thought it would be a big hit single when I first bought the album. Love the guitar! Instead the side closer "Blow Away:" was the hit. I don't think it is as good as LCTE, but it is still above average. "Not Guilty" finally gets official release. This is not as powerful as the Beatles version inexplicably cut from THE WHITE ALBUM, but it is still good. "Here Comes The Moon" has the nice guitar and "Soft Hearted Hannah" has some humor. A comfortable edge to GH side 1.

Thanks for catching that, John; I'll keep it in mind if it is close at the end that it should be one less for RRS 2 and one more for GH 1 JcS

GEORGE HARRISON, Side 1
George knocks that Red Rose Speedway tripe for six in this contest..
What was Paul thinking when he cut this record....or...what was he smoking...no quality control at all here.....

For Paul - score one part of his medley.
For George - score at least a couple of songs.
George wins.

GEORGE HARRISON by a landslide. I love that 1979 album, and every song on Side 1 is a winner.
RED ROSE SPEEDWAY has never been a favorite of mine, but the three or four songs I enjoy off it are all on Side 1, not Side 2.
Congratulations, George!

I remember how pleased I was to see GH on the LP shelves when I had no idea he was recording a new album. It is still one of my all time favs and this side has three 5s (NG, BA, HCTM).
The Hold Me Tight melody is one of my favorite Paul tunes, but the rest of the medley does little for me.

I remember how pleased I was to see GH on the LP shelves when I had no idea he was recording a new album. I had the exact same experience with Troppo and Cloud 9.

What was Paul thinking when he cut this record....or...what was he smoking...no quality control at all here..... Yeah, it's hard to believe that a guy that was putting together the ABBEY ROAD medley four years earlier could have listened to the RRS medley and thought "hey, I should release this and charge people to hear it!" It had to be the dope... JcS

Always liked that medley of love songs. Plus I got busted for shoplifting this album at age 17 so its a sentimental favorite.

This Hari album is a nice collection of songs - especially on side 1. It's a little soft for my tastes, though that softness adds a nice dimension to Not Guilty. Hana is my favorite on this side: George has an excellent sense of humor, which I'm sure not all fans appreciate.
RRS? A very medicore album. I sometimes wonder what the other members of Wings thought of this rubbish Macca was churning out. Probably pretty much what most of us think - but they kept quiet, for obvious reasons. Pity about that though: if they'd told Paulie, forcefully, that this stuff is crap we might have had better material from this group.
My vote - obviously Hari.

He need John or George Martin to use as a sounding board--or as a fear factor, in that he'd be too afraid to being the weak material to the session to start with. JcS

I will admit that RRS-2 is the weak link in an otherwise solid The JSD Postulate. Yet, it does have that airy charm of a man still doing it his way, to heck with everyone else. I would fight to the end in arguing that RRS-1 is a great Album Side.
RRS-2? I will not risk my credibility by voting this Side but it is not without its unique charms.
GH-1 is very good, among George's top six best album Sides. A nicely varied Side of music. "Love Comes to Everyone" is solid Pop music; I love the acoustic version of "Not Guilty," I have always been mixed on the rockier White Album-era version; I love "Here Comes the Moon" and I reject those(not here) who charge George with plagiarizing himself on this and "This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying," I hear magic in this song; "Soft-Hearted Hana" is a cool, funny song that almost made me want to try "magic shrooms" when I had a chance in college(maybe I should have, it is organic); and "Blow Away" which was a catchy A.M. hit.
GH-1 for me!

GEORGE HARRISON, Side 1Being a big Wings fan, Paul's RRS-2, has no chance with GH-1... The song *Love Comes to Everyone*. and his hit Blow *Away*, is enough to get my vote......

George Harrison Side 1 - Great start and closing tracks, I thought Here Comes the Moon was nice but abit soft and a smaller sibling of it's big brother Beatle track.
RRS S-2 has the awful When the Night, Loup and medley. I feel that Power Cut should have been made as a standalone track as it had alot of potential. Single Pigeon is also one I like.

What about including some of the bonus tracks that were laying around at the time to be fair. I don't think George had tracks like this just laying around. If he did, let me know.
I know people will say then you're not reviewing the album and that is kind of false. But I will tell you something that is even more false--the idea that the Red Rose Speedway era was a disaster for Paul. On the other hand if you look at what he produced during that year--1972--he really came up with some great material. All the songs below were recorded during 1972. The album was released in April 1973.
RED ROSE SPEEDWAY, Side 2
1. "Single Pigeon" 2. "When the Night" 3. "Loup (1st Indian on the Moon)" 4. "Hold Me Tight"/"Lazy Dynamite"/"Hands of Love"/"Power Cut" 5. "Live and Let Die" 6. "Mama's Little Girl" 7. "Country Dreamer" 8. "I Lie Around" 9."Tragedy" 10."C Moon" 11."Hi Hi Hi" 12."Best Friend" 13."The Mess"

Well I don't think Red Rose Speedway is all that bad and it is set in the "Life on Mars**" era. A time of industrial winter and power strikes when the lights literally went out across Britain. RRS is an album containing decent bits and pieces but never really striking a high point. Despite it's lightweight content in places it as an overall dark undertone to it. A feeling of those dark cold winter nights. And so we move on to the last year of the 70s. In contrast to Paul, George's album is more like a light summer breeze blowing gently through a late summer evening. I really think George was in a happy place around this time. Not a duff track on there and opens strongly with "Love Comes to Everyone" and closes with the "Happy Rishikesh Song" to different lyrics Red Rose Speedway is nowhere as bad as some say but George's album has a better quality and feel to it. He gets my vote!! Now for a beer! ** For those who don't know "Life on Mars" is a recent BBC TV series about a cop who travels back to 1973.

GH-1
RRS-2. What can I say, but other than the medley, I find no redeeming value with the first three songs. "Single Pigeon" is just plain wimpy, "When the Night" has pretty lame vocals from Paul and Linda and "Loop" is loopy.
I always kinda liked the Medley though.
GH-1 is one of the best sides of solo Beatles music, EVER!
