I agree that John felt persecuted and the album validly reflects that feeling. And the reason he felt put upon is because he was[/i] put upon. My point was that his actions invited the public/press reaction he got. John was no mug and must have realised this, and possibly even went some way towards engineering it in order to provoke press attention (I'm thinking the "if they want me to play the clown..." quote). Whether this makes him foolish or principled or brave or stubborn or a combination - well, that's a matter for conjecture. But given that he was keen to generate column inches for what he wanted, it was a little disingenuous of him to complain when those sameendeavours got press reaction he didn't want. And "fool" is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I'm perhaps more inclined to say "Emperor's new clothes" than outright fool. And that's my personal beholding, I accept, but I wasn't - and am not - alone. Even among some of those who greatly admire John for much of his post Beatles posturing, there's a fair amount of scorn for some of the artistic endeavours Yoko inspired him towards.[/quote] I like the song. I don't care whether John had it coming or not, he felt pain. My final words on this silly objection to the lyrics (really begun by RTP, not you, vectis) is that there were some people who persecuted John and Yoko just because they didn't like Yoko, and because they selfishly wanted their "Beatle John" back. So if you consider that John may be reacting to the hurt caused by THEM -- and not necessarily the ones who were only reacting to their silly projects -- then it stands just fine and his feelings are valid and were not self-created.

Having given it another listen, I have to admit the lyrics and guitar on Hold On are top flight. Stavros pointed out that it is the only song that is positive before the onslaught of negative themes. The lyrics "when you're by yourself and there's no one else you just have yourself and you tell yourself to hold on" are brilliant. Don't I know it, especially at this point in my life and what I'm going through. I love LOOK AT ME very much. This is the first time I've ever heard it mentioned in the same breath as JULIA, though.

Wow, this contest looked like a no brainer at first but got suprisingly close when I looked at the sides. Cutting POB in 2 really does diminish the effect of the work, it needs to be taken in it's entirety. And cutting ET in 2 really kept down the boredom factor resulting from too many slow songs in a row. I think You is great, even if the key is a bit high. Answers at the End, great lyrics and chords, marvelous. This Guitar is a real good song.
But POB may well be the best solo work any of the 4 released, and all the songs on Side 1 are amazing. Isolation is amazing, so heartfelt. So POB gets my vote.

I love LOOK AT ME very much. This is the first time I've ever heard it mentioned in the same breath as JULIA, though. Interesting. Yeah I always thought POB was sort of the White Album II for Lennon. Though even more stripped down and angry. With, of course, typical Lennon softer stuff like LOOK AT ME and LOVE too, not to mention ISOLATION.
