wow- this is a tough one... Two hits, songs not written by a Beatle and good album cuts.
I'll have to get back to it, but leaning ever so slightly to Harrison.

Like many of you, at first I almost could not vote. These sides are so closely matched, it was near impossible. What I finally did was, I settled on WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, for two reasons:
First, it was a very commercial album at the height of Paul's mid-seventies success and touring.
Second, I like 4 songs of SOS Side 1 (three of them "VERY MUCH"), where I only like 2 or 3 off of 33&1/3 Side 2 (and I only like CRACKERBOX PALACE there "VERY MUCH").
So basically, LET 'EM IN, SHE'S MY BABY, and BEWARE MY LOVE are three winners, where George's only has CRACKERBOX PALACE. I also like WINO JUNKO a little bit, and maybe 1 or 2 others from George's side, a little.

Ah, Speed Of Sound, the democratic Wings album. Paul patronizingly gives everyone a go: and Denny gets two songs to sing ; one of them is Paul's (one side 1) and one of them his very own (on side 2). A substandard album. Yes, yes, the playing is good (but how often, for example, is Paul's excellent bass used to excuse a poorly written song?). But the quality of the songs is ... well, I won't say it as I don't wish to offend. On the other hand, 33 1/3 is a fine album. Though Side 2 is the weaker, it does have some interesting Harrison touches. True Love was actually a song the Beatles performed on stage in Hamburg! It feels very tongue in cheek to me here, but is, none the less, enjoyable. Pure Smokey is a well crafted song in tribute to Smokey Robinson. Everyone likes Crackerbox Palace, with lyrics ambiguous enough to satisfy everyone - and rips along at the - er - speed of sound, so to speak. It's What You Value is good and "chunky", though a little long. Learning How To Love You I can recognize as a good song, but it's not to my taste. 33 1/3 sees George making a nice comeback after the rather dreary Extra Texture. Speed Of Sound sees Paul maintaining his mediocrity. McCabe

33 1/3 sees George making a nice comeback after the rather dreary Extra Texture. Speed Of Sound sees Paul maintaining his mediocrity. Well, Paul did have 2 mega-hits off SPEED OF SOUND, don't forget. Yes, I also think 33 1/3 is a nice comeback for George... but don't forget we're only comparing 1 side against each other, not each album for whole album. If you still feel George's side is better than Paul's, though, cool.

SOS1.
I like nearly all of it (curiously, Let 'em in is my least favourite).
33 1/3 not so much.

Well, Paul did have 2 mega-hits off SPEED OF SOUND, don't forget. And what a pair of shudderingly banal songs they are too. Oh, where would we be without you? But I think I can keep track of what's going on in this tournament without your help! You may find the whole thing a challenge, but others certainly don't. ;D

To me it comes down to "Let Em In" versus "Crackerbox Palace." Both are sort of second tier songs. But "Let Em In" has some nice moments while "Crackerbox" is a little slight.

Sorry McCabe but I'll have to take a Guinness on this one before you . I know it's far too early and all that but I need to cogitate. I will drink and then give my decision.

This was a hard decision but I opted for SoS as I really like Wino Junko and Jimmy's fuzzy guitar solo on it. The rest of the songs are pretty good a very melodic Wings album.
Side 2 of 33.3 repeater has the boring It's What You Value as the lead off track, True Love is a great little cover by George but the next 3 songs are real winners, Pure Smokey has that 70s production vibe but I still like it, Crackers is a great pop song and Learning How To Love You is sublime.

This is a tough one. On each album I liked the other side better. "Crackerbox Palace" and "Let Em In" were both enjoyable pop, but I like "Crackerbox Palace" better: the great Harrison guitar wins out over the cool percussion. However "Beware My Love" really rocks and George has nothing that comes close to competing with that. The rest are all OK, except "It's What You Value" which has George trying to sound up to date and "trendy" in a rather embarrassing way (Paul on the other hand shines on the very under-rated "Silly Love Songs", which I will elaborate on when that side comes up). So I see myself giving George and Paul each a plus, but also giving George a minus, so that leads me to vote for SOS side 1.

I voted for 33 1/3, Side 2....
Not much competition for George here...Macca was grabbing mediocrity by the scruff of the neck by this time and running with it..

This is like an "OT" match.

1. "Let 'Em In" 5:10 **** Beatlesque hit 2."The Note You Never Wrote" 4:19 ****nice Denny tune 3."She's My Baby" 3:06 *** good album cut 4."Beware My Love" 6:27*****excellent album cut 5."Wino Junko" 5:19** another anti-drug song from Jimmy-both turned out in vain. Score:18

Stavros, it's never too early for a G. Let your motto be Cogitate early, and often!Thank you my antipodean friend. OK so the Guinness ,the tunes and much cogitation. Well this takes me back to the the sounds of a long lost past and for some reason I remembered endless summer holidays as a kid, Space Invaders and Starsky & Hutch on TV. But back to the music. I considered going the way of mikev and scoring this track by track but I've gone for the over feel and have decided to go with SOS 1. Mainly because it's highpoints are the big hit 'Let 'Em In and a belter of track in "Beware My Love" . I'm starting to realise that Denny Laine was a vital part of Wings and "The Note You Never Wrote" is a very decent song I'd long forgotten. "She's My Baby" is also a cheerful album cut. As for 33⅓. Well "Crackerbox Palace" is the stand out track and a great one it is. But the rest of the album for me just fails to rise above the quality of SOS1 . Although it was very close as it does remind of a sunny seventies late summer afternoon when I didn't have a care in the world...... The question is do I start watching re-runs of Starsky & Hutch as well? Or maybe it was the Guiness?

I've looked at this match several times; I know SOS much better than 33 1/3, as I was given SOS by an ex-girlfriend (she knew I liked McCartney, and she wasn't too crazy about this one) in 1976, and didn't buy 33 1/3 until the 90's when I was completing the collection. I think I'm going to have to listen to 33 1/3 2 again...

I must say I'm pleased that everyone seems to like "Crackerbox Palace". Every critic I've read has slammed it and I never understood why. Glad to see so many on here enjoy it as much as I do!

I still can't make a vote and now I am distracted by the "new" Lennon releases, three of which I just purchased. I am leaning towards SOS-1 but I refuse to so quickly discard 33 1/3-2 as it was a huge part of my life back in 1976, as was SOS-1, which was a gloriously fun time for me too(but I never liked Starsky & Hutch! ).

WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, Side 1Well, I had to get off the fence. I spent much more time with SOS-1 back in 1976 than 331/3-2 and even today I might feel the same. It would have been harder had 33 1/3-1 been pitted against SOS-1. I did play Side 1 of 33 1/3 much more than Side 2 of that album. Oh the days of having to flip and clean album sides and the then stylus before playing the record(I was a compulsive record cleaner with my solid Oak DiscWasher system! ;D ). It is so much easier to listen to music these days but maybe cleaning the records and the stylus were part of the charm of music listening back then!

WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, Side 1
1. "Let 'Em In" *** Very slight, but glad Paul stills plays it 2."The Note You Never Wrote" *ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz 3."She's My Baby" 3:06 **** Love the "keep mopping it up" vocal 4."Beware My Love"*** Hasn't aged well for me, but OK 5."Wino Junko" 5:19*** Not nearly as good as "Medicine Jar"
Score:14
33 1/3, Side 2
1. "It's What You Value" **** Love this one 2. "True Love" (Cole Porter) **** Ditto 3. "Pure Smokey" – 3:56 *** 4. "Crackerbox Palace" – 3:57**** 5. "Learning How To Love You" – 4:13 **
Score:17
33 1/3 was a nice comeback album for George, while SOS was a pale imitation of Venus and Mars.

33 1/3
Oh yes, Beware My Love crackles, but Let Em In is one of the most overrated "hits" in the solo catalog, only made it because the Beatle was on tour. SOS is a very unremarkable album, while 33 1/3 percolates. And Learning How To Love You is one of the best...songs...that an ex-Beatle worte and recorded. Just lovely through and through.
