MMT SIDE 1. Both are great sides, but I dislike "Blue Jay Way" less than "Run For Your Life", which has not aged well! . I remember John later disowned "Run For Your Life" (although he also disowned "Eight Days a Week" and "It's Only Love", so go figure!)

MMT1 is not a collexion of songs that the Beatles thought of as an LP side. (They released it as a 2-EP set. I don't care that Americans disliked EPs; they should have shown respect to the artist: but they hadn't been doing that for years, had they? Chop, change, mix, they go. And release SHORT albums to boot - none of that 14 song UK stuff for them!. Woops, I'm ranting. I'll stop now. ) So clearly Soul2 is going to get my nod. Is it worthy? Well, if you refer back you'll see that I think its the weaker of the two Soul sides. Some iffy efforts here. Hold everything then - let's think again - MMT has some really good songs I like a lot. Flying, Blue Jay Way, Fool to name three. And the incomparable Walrus. Perhaps I was too hasty about putting MMT1 out of court. It's a great set of songs. And come to think of it, the Beatles didn't intend side 2 to be an LP side either: they were singles. Yes, all things considered, and playing the game in the right spirit, and being an all-round good guy, at the end of the day, my vote has to go to ... MMT1. Hey, the sky has not fallen in. Everything's all right.

Rubber Soul - side 2I just woke up about five minutes ago and would normally leave posting a comment until later, but I had to put an early shout in for the second half of Rubber Soul. It starts and finishes on weak notes but in between are a sting of great Beatles songs... Girl, I'm looking through you, In my life, Wait, If I needed someone... Put these up against what is the weaker side of MMT (the nondescript 'Flying', the dreary 'Blue Jay Way', the over-twee 'Your mother should know'). Even the title track is OK-but-nothing-special. RS-2 by a distance. Can't believe at the time of posting it was losing four-nil...! Can I go back to bed now?

RUBBER SOUL, Side 2"What Goes On" is good, original rockabilly with the unique Starkey/Lennon/McCartney tag; "Girl" and "In My Life" are icons, John at his very best; "I'm Looking Through You" is very good Paul; "If I Needed Someone" is very good George; "Wait" is rather slight but "Run For Your Life" is wickedly wonderful. While John never murdered a woman of his, thank goodness, let us take a peek into that troubled mind of his even if he was more talk than action(not without some physical violence per Cynthia). I just really like John's vocal on RFYL. MMT is mostly bells and whistles, curiously little substance in that song; I've noted before that "Fool On The Hill" seems really dated to my ears, the Fool was just a fool after all; "Flying is nice but not vote-swinging; "Blue Jay Way" is wonderful at fighting sleep deprivation; well, your mother should blow, 'nuff said; "I Am Walrus" is iconic but I am burned out on it having heard it 1000 times in the month of June on Sirius Sat. Radio's "The Spectrum," station #18. Who would have thought "Walrus" ever overplayed on a radio station, especially a pay-to-listen station.

"Rubber Soul" on this one. Both sides have some weak spots, but RS is better overall.

The first four votes went for MMT 1, then we had six for RS 2. I'm breaking that string.
Except for the last half of "Blue Jay Way," which goes on too "long," I like all of MMT 1, and it starts and finishes big, which is important in judging a vinyl side. I'm one that likes "What Goes On," but it's an odd opener for a side. I'm not as fond of "Girl" as many are, but have great affection for both "I'm Looking Through You" and "In My Life."
The bottomline is that "I Am The Walrus" closes out a side of tunes I like better than "Run For Your Life" closes out a side of songs I mostly like, and in the final analysis, I give the nod to MMT 1.

I really love Rubber Soul and this one was tough. But Walrus is one of the best tracks in history. Whereas RS2 peters out to a very flat ending. MMT1 ends with a dose of swirling psychedelia. Close but MMT shaved it.

I notice that I voted for the later stuff rather than the earlier stuff in just about every match-up.

Still good (and even great) stuff, but the weaker side of each LP. My first thought was RS 2, but I'll do some matchups;
"In My Life" versus "I Am The Walrus": two classics of very different styles-a toss-up "I'm Looking Through You" versus "The Fool On The Hill": two strong McCartney tracks, slight edge to "Fool" "If I Needed Someone" versus "Blue Jay Way": matchup of George's tracks is a huge edge for the wonderful folk-rock of "If I Needed Someone" over the way too long "Blue Jay Way" "Magical Mystery Tour" vs "Run For Your Life": two good rockers that I like more than the average person so another toss-up "Wait" vs "Your Mother Should Know": a win for "Wait" as YMSK is the weakest of the McCartney "old standards" type songs, too repetitive, an unusual trait for Paul. "Wait" has a John part and a Paul part, which I rather enjoy. "Girl" &"Run For Your Life" vs. "Flying": I don't like "Girl" as much as some, it's OK, (But a terrible choice for the Red Album-should have been replaced by another REVOLVER track) and "What Goes On" is terribly sung. I like that it is not on my US RUBBER SOUL LP. "Flying" is OK, I actually like a bootleg version of it I have better. Another toss-up. So it looks like I give a slight edge to RUBBER SOUL side 2.

Too easy. Rubber Soul side 2 is mostly classics. Magical McCartney Tour is a bunch of uninspired leftovers and B-sides ("I Am The Walrus" is good but the rest... meh).

I'm not sure if I voted on this one earlier, Joey. But I can't remember, so I'll try to put in my two cents (or 4 cents, depending;).
Not need for analysis from me here. Although, of course, I like the U.S. version of RS2 better than the UK one. Even if it's two against one, "It's Only Love" beats "What Goes On" and "If I Needed Someone" everytime for me.
