The final of our second round matches pits albums from consecutive years. SP 1 beat BFS 1 by a 20-2 margin, while TB 3 ousted HELP! 2 by 12-8 score.
I'll be on vacation next week, but will probably have Internet access (I almost always do). This last match will stay up until at least Tuesday, July 27 to give it time to be discussed, and to allow players to finish up the discussion/voting in the other matches.

Pepper 1. I love the whole side.
TB3 - starts of brilliantly, then becomes an extended Lennon whinge and McCartney shrill noise before finishing with George's sublime Long Long Long.

SGT. PEPPER, Side 1
This album is streets ahead of the White Album quality wise...

I think TB3 is the second best side of the WA and every song is a winner for me but the 1-2-3 punch of the first 3 songs of Sgt Pepper is just too good, the rest not so shabby either.
Therefore Sgt Pepper S1 for me.

'Pepper' - side one.Actually, side three of the White Album doesn't contain any out-and-out duds, but it's a mixture of songs I used to really rate and have gone a bit cool on (Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter) and songs that I prefer other versions of (Yer blues = R&R Circus; Mother nature's son = Anthology). I really hope that one of these days I can get back into the White Album.

A very easy choice: SGT PEPPER side 1. As an earlier poster said, the first three on PEPPER are fantastic. "SPLHCB", "WALHFMF" and "LITSWD" are all great songs that flow together perfectly. I enjoy all the rest, especially "Mr Kite". I like "She's Leaving Home", which I know some don't. "Fixing A Hole" and "Getting Better" very good too. Good variety, but variety that really works and sound good together. THE BEATLES side 3 has variety, but it is very disjointed. Lennon in particular fairs poorly on this side. "Monkey" is the only song of his I like. "Yer Blues", as others have said, just isn't done that well here-much better on R@R Circus and LIVE PEACE. "Sexy Sadie" has the piano and not much else, some of John's poorest singing and I've never cared for his vengeful side. "Long Long Long', I could never hear. It is better re-mastered and I like it OK now. McCartney does better with a couple excellent rockers ("Birthday" and "Helter Skelter") and the gentle "Mother Nature's Son", but that's not enough to get this side past SGT PEPPER side 1.

It's close, but I go with the White Album. Sgt. Pepper is one of the Beatles' weakest albums. I prefer all sides of the White Album, except 4, to Sgt. Pepper-side 1.
For me, Birthday, Yer Blues, Mother's Nature's Son, and Helter Skelter are 4 classics. Matching that, Sgt. Pepper, With A Little Help, Lucy in the Sky, and She's Leaving Home are also 4 classics. But I prefer my Beatles earthy and rockin'.

Pretty easy choice for me to pick SP 1. I like the pair that open and close the side of TB 3, but the trio in the middle aren't that hot. On SP 1, there's nothing that would cause me to want to pick up the needle and move to another song.

This is another match-up giving me problems. It's a multi-Guinness decision ...
The issue is this: in truth, too many of Pepper's songs are what I call level-2 Beatle product. To name them: Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, its reprise, Getting Better, Leaving Home, Kite, 64, Rita, Good Morning! However ...
However ... they are arranged very well. The music of Pepper converts its many medicre songs into a good listening experience.
The Beatles Side 3 has a lot of great songs, better in many instances than Pepper's. I bet Lennon liked his songs here a whole lot better than almost all his Pepper stuff. Yer Blues, Monkey, Sadie are classic Lennon. Birthday, Helter Skelter, Mother Nature are also classic Macca. LongLongLong is a terrific Harrisong. The songs are also played well, without the feeling of overdoing it, or pomposity, that I sometimes (not often) feel does hover over Pepper.
Ah gee, what to do? In a sense it doesn't matter, because Pepper is winning easily. Yet one must have integrity...
And one must also have another Guinness. I'll decide later.

Ha, great post McCabe! I agree that TB-3 is stronger than a first glance might suggest.
I haven't voted yet either and have been stewing this for days now. I thought that seeing Ringo live might give me answers for this vote but it only taught me not to return to casinos for rock concerts.

Gotta go with Sgt Pepper. "Benefit of Mr Kite" is a great, under-rated piece of psychedelia with a real creepy charm to it.

THE BEATLES, Side 3
The Beatles rock harder on TB-3 than anywhere else in their canon. Being in a Stones' craze, I really am in a rocking mode so how can I vote against a side of music where The Beatles rock harder than anyone on the face of the Earth?
I have a whole new appreciation and respect for "Mother Nature's Son" after hearing Jack White do it at the White House on the PBS special broadcast last night. A nice rest between blasts of rock on the White Album, White's interpretation sounded like Robert Plant at the height of Led Zeppelin so now I know how LZ would have sounded in their prime covering MNS! Cool! Jack White justifies MNS's inclusion on the "Rock Side" of the White Album! I love The Beatles' performances of "Yer Blues" and "Sexy Sadie," this band had its act together in those moments. Same with "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey." "Sadie" is another calm before the storm when Paul and lads unleash "Helter Skelter." "Long, Long, Long" is simply amazing: so spiritual, delivered almost like a prayer, but then builds into something so powerful that it knocks you off your feet.
I think TB-3 could be the most underrated Side of music made by The Beatles. All I know is that back in 1976, the stoners and rockers(mostly one and the same) at my junior high loved TB-3 wherein they had no love of most other Fabs. Their brains may have been on the way to getting fried by all the dope they were smoking but they were on to something with TB-3!
SPLHCB-1 is a great Side of music. Some lesser songs are mixed with masterpieces to create a wonderful mix that I would call magical or at least enchanted. Yet I must be true to Rock, so TB-3 for me.

In these little contests, your vote against a side doesn't mean that side is poor. It just means that you prefer the other, perhaps by the tiniest of margins. So I'm goin to vote for TB Side 3. Pepper is wonderful, & I just love that 1967 vibe (oh yes I do man). But TB3 is more of the music by a rock band. Yer Blues, masterful (I can't understand those who say the Circus version or the Toronto version is better: no way there for me!). Monkey, strange - but this short little song rocks along. Sadie, wonderful Lennon venom. Helter Skelter - stop reading this now, and go and listen to this LOUD - really LOUD. Still not convinced? Listen to the other songs on this side: Birthday, Mother Nature ... and Long. Isn't Long simply a beautiful song? In goes the vote for TB3

Pepper 1. The cohesiveness of the Pepper tracks, in addition to their greatness, does it all for me.

Helter Skelter - stop reading this now, and go and listen to this LOUD - really LOUD. Eh? What'd you say, Sonny? Speak a little louder, I can't hear yer mumbling....

I'm always looking for the side that sounds more cohesive, with each song getting you to eagerly anticipate the next song. That happens for me with SP1, not as much with TB 3 (She's Leaving Home, notwithstanding). But, to McCabe's point, I still like TB3 a lot.
