A show of hands, please: Who will take part in a solo tourney of this nature for John? Paul? George? I ask it that way because some may be willing to do one or two, but not all three. JcS Count me in for John and George. But please not Paul: most of his solo stuff leaves me cold. I've done Paul and George on another board, and both have been fun. In fact, the Paul one was much more so that I thought it would be. Sometimes it makes good conversation to blast something! But I'll put you down in the J&G column... JcS

As to a solo tourney. Paul I would be in for sure. I have all his solo LP's and know most of them very well. He is my favorite of the solo Beatles. John also (but leave out the pre-JOHN LENNON PLASTIC ONO BAND stuff). He had the weakest solo career compared to what he did in the Beatles. George I could do, though there are a few LP's I don't know as well. But overall his solo career exceed what he did with the Beatles. As to Ringo, the RINGO album and the "It Don't Come Easy"/"Early 1970" single stand up with the best of any of the other three, but the rest just doesn't come close.

Well, there has been a "behind-the-scenes" suggestion (and I don't reveal details of private conversations unless authorized; if the one that made this suggestion wants to identify himself or herself, he/she can) that I concoct a "solo Apple tourney." That would take us from the earliest experimental albums all the way through EXTRA TEXTURE. VENUS AND MARS was not released on Apple, but since it came out before ET, I thought it should be included.
The idea appeals to me because it is clear from my many years on this and other boards that the hard core Beatle fan is most familiar with the solo work that came out in those 5 years after the break-up.
I'm going to play with the concept a little to try to make it work in a tourney format; some things may be excluded like the Lennon/Ono titles (but not SINYC), and I don't figure on putting BANGLADESH in the mix, as over half of it was someone NOT a Beatle.
I post this publicly to invite comment on this proposal. I think it has a lot of merit, but there may be a downside I'm not seeing.
Oh, and voting on this thread ends later today (8:00 PM CDT).

Oh, and voting on this thread ends later today (8:00 PM CDT). JcS Hey gang, let's get more votes in with some thoughts as to the vote! I know for myself, I gain new insights or appreciation for songs (or album Sides) I never had before by reading the comments on this Board. Maybe we don't always change each others' minds on things but we sure help fire our already love and fascination of this music by giving our observations. We had 26 voters in at least one of the Round 1 matches(Match 3)! That gives Joey incentive to do more of these it would seem to me. We have been discussing the heck out of early solo material and wouldn't a tourney on it make us focus on specific bits of music instead of more generalizations! Please vote and discuss if you haven't yet! Thanks!

I went for side 1 ( even if it is a losing cause), as "For No One" is too much of a downer for my tastes, and TNK still freaks me out! As for the solo albums, I'm afraid I'm not as knowledgable about the solo stuff as I should be, so I will likely sit it out. However, I will "lurk"on the sidelines and observe the comments!

The good news these days is that YouTube has fan-made clips of just about every solo song. Therefore, you can use a tourney as an excuse to become more familiar with the solo works--if you want to. And now, we know the answer to the burning question: What was the greatest vinyl side of Beatles music?
The answer is, by at 10-6 margin, is:
REVOLVER, Side 2
Only a few bothered to make a pick on the third place game, but based on what we did have, SGT. PEPPER 1 is named our bronze medalist.
Thanks to all that played and commented.

Well done Joey, great tourney...give your Self a pat on the back.... Yes, thank you Joey! I always enjoy these tournaments to motivate me to play the music again. I enjoy people being frank in their assessments, whether pro or con. I'm somewhat sorry my early fave TB-4 did not do better because it contains 2 of the 3 Revolution Trilogy, the two most important parts I may add. "Cry Baby Cry" blurs childhood with mysticism and highlights how spooky life really is so that gets a nod too. Paul's tag-on "Can You Take Me Back" is a better closer for the 1960's than "The End" on Abbey Road. I think many went on that long and winding road through the Sixties only to yearn for the simpler, optimistic times times of early Camelot: Can you take me back where I came from
Can you take me back
Can you take me back where I came from
Brother can you take me back
Can you take me back?
Mm can you take me where I came from
Can you take me back? Thanks again, JcS!

Revolver Side 2 for me purely because it has 3 John Lennon tracks, one more than Side 1 and they all rock.
