Running from OFF THE GROUND to MEMORY ALMOST FULL, almost all the rock studio recordings from 1990 to 2007 are included. Lazy that I am, I used the sorter on the word processor to group them for us in the first round. I'm content knowing that if a song can't survive to the second round, it wouldn't have finished in the top 10 here anyway.
For those of you that haven't played a tournament I'm running, in this round, you will pick 8 of these to advance. The top 8 in this group and in the other 3 will advance to the next round. We'll eventually wind up head-to-head to crown a champ.
Voting will continue until at least noon CDT, September 25, 2008. Please feel free to post your picks and discuss anything that comes to mind when you see these groupings.

I went with pretty standard picks. "Dance Tonight" has stuck with me since I first heard it. "Fine Line" is a great song of the kind Paul doesn't seem to do many of. "Cosmically Conscious" has a retro feel for me. "Biker Like an Icon" has dumb lyrics, but I managed to get past them.

About You: Proof that there were great songs on DR! At The Mercy: This is a fantastic song & great as an instrumental. Beautiful Night: Ringo's role, Linda's illness make this poignant. Calico Skies: One of my fav Macca songs, I like the lyrics Dance Tonight: Great TGIF song: work is done weekend is here. Driving Rain: Paul looking for a release from pain. Fine Line: Fine Slime has aged okay. ;D Flaming Pie: Great piano boogie on record but it sucks live! These were my votes this Round. I take it with the polling format we can comment after the song as I have done. It won't interfere with your counting, right?

Here are my eight: About You (like JSD said, proof that Driving Rain wasn't ALL bad!) Beautiful Night (which did benefit from the 1997 rewrite, and from Ringo's participation) Calico Skies (which was used in our wedding) C'mon People (not even JoeySelf's overanalysis could turn me off of this one!) Dance Tonight (my toddler loves it almost as much as Paul's did) English Tea (not even the embarrassing NASA association ruined this one) Ever Present Past (good single) Fine Line (ditto) NP: Ozzy Osbourne, "Sunshine Of Your Love," Under Cover (too slow and draggy)

Easy to make the cut at 8, with a heavy dose of C&C in this ballot:
A Certain Softness About You My favorite on DRIVING RAIN. Anyway At The Mercy Dance Tonight Slight but pleasant opener for MAF. English Tea Ever Present Past One of my favorites on MAF. Fine Line
