Voting to close no earlier than noon CDT, October 7, 2008.
In this round, you are choosing between the two songs paired against one another (like a sport tournament). Please cut and paste this ballot and then eliminated your choice on each one (If you can't decide on one, leaving both is fine, or taking both out works.) Please put your ballot at the top of the page with the comments below.
These were seeded roughly on how well they did last round, but with 6 FLAMING PIE song and 5 from MEMORY ALMOST FULL, I had to do some adjustment to keep them from colliding in the first round.
1. Beautiful Night 16. That Was Me
8. Calico Skies 9. Too Much Rain
4. The World Tonight 13. Mr. Bellamy
5. Vintage Clothes 12. Friends To Go
2. Fine Line 15. Only Mama Knows
7. Hope Of Deliverance 10. Little Willow
3. Ever Present Past 14. Somedays
6. Jenny Wren 11. Flaming Pie

Toughest for me was Ever Present vs. Somedays - quintessential Paul Pop vs. top-tier balladry...

Mr. Self is absolutely evil for pairing "Calico Skies" and "Too Much Rain" this early on as these two are favorites for many of us and we know Mr. Self has been highly critical of CS's lyrics, to the point of ridicule, while uncharacteristically enthusiastic of "Too Much Rain." Mr Self is determined to see CS go down in flames early thus depriving us savoring it for a few more Rounds at least. I must vote my heart here.
Every song in this Round is superb with the exceptions of "Mr. Bellamy" and "Only Mama Blows" which are okay, the latter should not have been written in the first person. I paused at "Vintage Clothes" and "Friends To Go" but the former got my vote as it is so melodic and filled with hooks as Paul was once known for.

Mr Self is determined to see CS go down in flames early thus depriving us savoring it for a few more Rounds at least. I must vote my heart here. Ahhh, if only I could be this sinister. First, I don't think my criticism of "Calico Skies" has risen to the level of ridicule--unless pointing out that the third verse has nothing to do with the first two, and wondering (because I don't know) what the title means. It may well have a meaning. Second, the making of this bracket was a bit tricky. I had 6 from FLAMING PIE to deal with, and I wanted to put 3 in each half of the bracket (the top 8), and three in the bottom, AND I wanted to make sure none faced off in the first round. Then I had 5 from MAF to scatter as best I could in the same way. When it came time to put the remaining tracks--4 from C&C and "Hope Of Deliverance"--I didn't have a lot of choices. "Jenny Wren" had the most votes of the C&C songs, so it was given the top seed of what was left (#6). "Too Much Rain" was next after "Hope Of Deliverance" went into #7, and there it went. Third, my praise for "Too Much Rain" is lavish--it is easily the best song left on this board--but I do recognize that it is largely because of the way it spoke to me at the time I heard it. I first heard this right after it was released. In the year and a half before, I'd lost my dad, mother of my college roommate, great friend from high school, my mom, another good friend, and an aunt that was like another grandmother--and that's just what I can remember as I sit here. I felt like I'd been deluged with losses. "Too Much Rain" summed up the emotions of loss in a way that Paul had not done since perhaps "For No One," and in the case of the latter, I'd not heard it until after I was happily married. I don't know that it is a song that can only be appreciated by those that have experienced the loss of a spouse, parent, or close friend, but I suspect those that have been through it can more readily identify what McCartney accomplished here. JcS Darn, I forgot to put a after those lines! Seriously, that was a tough pairing of two songs I love. Your ridicule has probably been more for the lyrics to "C'mon People" but I recall once a rather scathing post on the CS lyrics going from soldiers to lovers. While not suffering the string of losses as you have, "Too Much Rain" has about the same effect on me and I absolutely find it among the best Paul has written and performed. Yet "Calico Skies" always reminds me of the trying times Paul and Linda went through with Linda's illness and the strength and love they seemingly had. Those difficult times are captured in the music of the album "Flaming Pie" even if Paul denies it. No matter when many of those songs were written, they were largely recorded or re-recorded when Paul was going through the greatest crisis of his life, bar none. The emotions were bound to spill in and influence the music.

And John, if you think Joey's been savage to "Calico Skies"... it's a good thing "C'mon People" didn't make it this far! (I like "C'mon People" despite Joey's past criticisms, because I don't dissect lyrics nearly so much, and the music is fairly powerful.)

2. Fine Line

6. Jenny Wren
"Beautiful Night" starts nicely, but then fall apart about the time of the first chorus. "That Was Me" probably needed a bit more work, but it's better even as it is.
As I said earlier, "Too Much Rain" is the class of this field, and easily beats "Calico Skies" on my ballot.
"Mr. Bellamy" could have been a winner here, but the meandering intro and outro cripple it. Plus, Paul should have enlisteed the aid of someone else to sing the parts of the workers trying to bring Bellamy in. "The World Tonight" is better from start to finish.
"Friends To Go" is just a bit better than "Vintage Clothes;" my toughest choice of this lot.
"Fine Line" is much better than "Only Mama Knows," which as John stated earlier, should have been written in the observational mode rather than in the first person.
"Little Willow" is nice, quite touching, but "Hope Of Deliverance" is a great work as well. Close, but "Hope" gets the nod.
And I could say just about the same for "Somedays" and "Ever Present Past" as I take the latter.
"Flaming Pie" was OK, but "Jenny Wren" was much better.

"Fine Line" is much better than "Only Mama Knows," which as John stated earlier, should have been written in the observational mode rather than in the first person. I must give you credit, Joey, for first observing that and likewise I agree with you on Bellamy: even I might have tolerated that song if others did the attendants' voices or whoever those people are urging Bellamy to come down. Ringo and Brian Wilson would have been cool in that role although Brian might get paranoid thinking that Paul wrote Bellamy about him! ;D

I had Elvis Costello in mind for the role, although I can hear Ringo singing "Steady lads. Easy does it."
