PLEASE PLEASE ME, Side 2
"Love Me Do" 2:22 "P.S. I Love You" 2:05 "Baby It's You" 2:38 "Do You Want to Know a Secret" 1:59 "A Taste of Honey" 2:05 "There's a Place" 1:52 "Twist and Shout" 2:33
LET IT BE, Side 2
"I've Got a Feeling" 3:38 "One After 909" 2:54 "The Long and Winding Road" 3:38 "For You Blue" 2:32 "Get Back" 3:09
Once again, the luck of the draw pits a side from the beginning of the Beatles' career with one from the end of it.
There is one match left in the first round, so if you've passed over any of the previous ones, please vote and comment in the next few days. After the last match is posted, we'll let it ride three or four days (it shouldn't be close), and then go to the next round.

The freshness and energy of PPM beats out LIB, even if "Get Back" is there.

Let it Be is my favourite Beatles album so selecting Let it Be side 2 was a no brainer...
They were better players at the end than they were at the start, especially George...

LIB, as I love all the songs. I tend to skip over "A Taste of Honey", even if it does have cool harmonies...

LET IT BE, Side 2
PPM-2 does not seem to rock as hard as PPM-1 although PPM-2 ends on a very high note with the great "There's A Place" and the ultimate stomper "Twist And Shout."
"A Taste Of Honey" was a terrible choice for inclusion on a Beatles' album. If The Beatles were to be honest they'd have to admit that. I don't care about the crap about winning over the Mums; that was totally unnecessary as history has proved. The 1960's was a time for "Youth" and The Beatles wasted time early on catering to the grannies and Queens with these songs. "Honey" cost PPM-2 my vote.
LIB-2 has one of the greatest starts of all Beatles' album sides. That guitar riff intro to "I've Got A Feeling" invites the listener in, it all but says, "Something good is here, come on in, sit and listen to some good music." Here is an example of where we lose something with c.d.'s: one would hear the rousing but ultimately silly "Maggie Mae," get up, walk over to the turntable and flip the record and BOOM, that wonderful guitar intro.
The great vibe continues with the rocking "One After 909" which is a very good performance by the entire band. This might be their best live performance of the batch. TLAWR can bring me down if I'm in the wrong mood but if I am in the right mood, it becomes sublime.
The closing two songs are very nice, rollicking songs to end matters.
As I write this, I realize how much I like Let It Be.

Earlier, I gave Side 1 of LET IT BE the rhubarb. Side 2 is even worse, with no Universe or I Me Mine to raise the standard.
For me, I've Got a Feeling is overrated. One After909 rock? No, it doesn't. If it was a no-goer in 1963, it won't work now. Nostalgia ruled the head on this one. The Long & Winding Road? Trundle, trundle, boring, boring. For You Blue - it's OK I suppose, but I know why this so-so effort was given the nod: George had better songs (All Things, anyone?) but to record them might show Paulie and Johnny up, mightn't it? And Get Back: it's the best song on the side - but that doesn't say much.
PPM2 will have to be a disaster to lose to this turkey!
And, praise be, it's anything but a disaster. Love Me Do, a very pleasant little song. There's A Place - a really good song, saying much (with feeling & style) in a short 2 minutes. And Twist and Shout - oh yes, that peerless Lennon vocal. Although some of the other songs are not really tops, that's enough good solid punches from PPM2 to knock LIB2 out for the count.

LIB2 wins. Even though PPM plays it's hand with 2 more tracks and ends with a fantastic performance of 'Twist & Shout' it simply lacks the quality that Let it Be has. 'One after 909' and 'For You Blue' are a bit ordinary but are played with a sense of fun. Something we are led to believe the Beatles didn't have making Let it Be. And ends with the classic "Get Back" via TLAWWR.

PPM -S2 for me.
I think it's just as good as S1. I love the harmonising between John and Paul on PS I Love You a great Beatle trait that is nowhere to be found on LIB except for One After 909 but that was brought in from that early period, it didn't work for me.
Love Me Do is a cute little track, Baby It's You is John trying to sound grown up and he sings it well, DYWTKAS is another catchy little track with a first time George vocal, A Taste of Honey gets looked over alot but I like it and the album closes with a bang, John's There's A Place and the great Twist and Shout.
LIB S2 has some good songs but I don't think any of them were done justice by the Beatles except for Get Back. I've Got A Feeling in particular could have been alot better, I don't like the guitar tones on this song, they are not edgy and harsh and I don't like Billy Preston's contributions except on Get Back.

"One After 909" is another one of those songs that seemed lightweight at the time, but has really grown on me. Theres a rollicking, infectuous, joyous sound that gets to me.

Let It Be side 2 wins for me as it is stronger overall. From PPM side 2, "Twist And Shout" is great, "There's A Place" shows the promise of greater Lennon lyrics to come, and "Love Me Do" is darn catchy, but every song on side 2 of LIB rates ahead of any other song on PPM side 2 in my opinion.

These are two of my least favorite albums in the catalog--YELLOW SUBMARINE would have to be my least, because half of it ain't the Beatles-- and yet, there is plenty to like about both. Using my "put the needle on the record at the beginning and listen to the end" test, I went for LIB 2, but not by much. Having to sit through "A Taste Of Honey" tipped the scales against PPM 2.
