YELLOW SUBMARINE, Side 1
Yellow Submarine Only A Northern Song All Together Now Hey Bulldog It's All Too Much All You Need Is Love
The final of the matches in the first round pits the Beatles at their most brilliant against them at their least interested. I saved this one for last because it looked like one of the runaway matchups, and I thought it would give players a chance to catch up on the other contests. My plan is to shut down the entire first round Friday night/Saturday morning and commence the second one.
Here is how it currently stands:
AHDN2 17, BFS2 4 RS2 19, TB4 4 TB2 14, LIB1 11 AR1 12, WTB2 10 SP1, 19, BFS1 2 MMT1, 12, PPM1 9 TB3 10, HELP2 8 HELP1 9, SP2 8 RS1 11, WTB1 4 LIB2 9, PPM2 6
As you can see, we've had as many as 25 play in the 3rd match, and as few as 15 in the last couple. Six of the matches are still within 3 votes, so if there is a large turnout in some of those, we may have a different outcome (the two with HELP involved are especially still in the air, and thus I've refrained from voting)

Gotta count that side of Revolver as one of my all-time favorites in the Beatles canon.

REVOLVER 2 has already got my vote, as it is a brilliant side of music from their most brilliant and creative album.
And yet ....
I would like to say a few words in praise of YS1. Unlike many people, I find Yellow Submarine to not be quite the innocent kids' sing-along that many think it was written as. There is a somewhat pleading undercurrent running through the song. To maybe get a feel for what I mean, try speaking the lyrics in a sad & weary way, as if longing for a retreat from the hurly-burly of modern life. "In the town where I was born, lived a man who sailed to sea (retreating), and he told of his life ... (obviously in favor of getting away from it all beneath the waves, as that's where "they" end up too). And so on.
Only A Northern Song is a Beatles classic. Its array of sounds and dreamy self-referential lyrics make it one of the Beatles great psychedelic songs. That George Martin turned his nose up at it shows in certain respects that he didn't understand some aspects of Beatles music. All Together Now is apparently a cutesy Macca song - but "black white green red, can I take my friend to bed?" shows that it's not totally cutesy. Hey Bulldog is another classic, putting the lie to those who think the Beatles did not have rock balls. It's All Too Much is another psychedelic classic from George - a wonderful, different, engaging song. Lastly, All You Need Is Love - probably the weakest song of the side, and IT'S the sixties anthem of love - a classic.
So Revolver 2 got my vote, but it was a closer-run thing for me than some of the other matches.

I'm with McCabe on this one. I voted for Revolver side 2, but it was hardly a runaway even though Revolver is my favorite Beatles album (and side 2 has three of my all-time favorite songs: "For No One", "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "And Your Bird Can Sing" with the other songs all being very good to excellent), but like Mr. McCabe, I think "Only A Northern Song" "Hey Bulldog" and "It's All Too Much" are excellent songs. I also really like "All You Need Is Love" and "Yellow Submarine". "All Together Now" is the weakest, but it is pleasant enough. In essence, YS side 1 loses only because it is up against one of the very best sides the Beatles ever did.

Maybe I should have given my opinion about the Revolver2 songs above. Perhaps a couple of observations.
I don't know what others think, but For No One has got to be Macca's BEST "love song", full stop. The lyrics are pointed, and tell their story economically and gently. I can almost hear the sob in the throat of the fellow whose lady no longer needs him.
And I think Tomorrow Never Knows is (yet another) Beatles masterpiece. It can take its place in the top echelon of Fab4 Music, along with Strawberry Fields, Walrus, Day in the Life.
(BTW, there is another version of TNKnows, & I'm not referring to Anthology's Mark 1. When the mono UK Revolver album was released in 1966, George Martin saw straightaway that the mix of TNKnows was not the one they wanted. Martin recalled this mono Revolver, but some copies have, of course, escaped. This version of TNKnows is noticeably different, and has a longer piano end. If you'd like a copy of this "other" TNKnows (note that all the other songs on the album are the familiar mixes), pm me and I'll send you a link where you can dl it.)

Damn the luck for pairing these two sides together. I love them both. "Revolver" doesn't have a weak moment on it, while the first and last track on YS are a slight dropoff, it ain't much. "Revolver" has "And Your Bird Can Sing," one of John's best vocals, while "Tomorrow Never Knows" is a tour de force. I always enjoyed "All Together Now" for its spirit. "Hey Bulldog" is a great rocker (imagine if, say, Jerry Lee Lewis had covered it). And "It's All Too Much" blew me away when I heard it in the Castro Theatre seeing the remastered YS. But I'm picking YS just to go against the grain. Great songs and "It's All Too Much" is fantastic.

REVOLVER, Side 2
Good selection of songs here that are a cut and a half above the Yellow Sub offerings, All You Need is Love being the exception...

I'm glad to see some (McCabe and Coach have specifically mentioned what I'm about to say) are taking YS 1 as a whole, including "Yellow Submarine" and "All You Need Is Love" in their evaluation. A voter can use whatever criteria he or she wants, but my thought is that the listening experience should be judged from when you put the needle on the outer edge of the disc all the way to the run-out groove. Those two retreads are part of YS 1.
That said, those two hit singles can't quite pull YS 1 up to the level of REV 2. I agree with McCabe that "For No One" is Paul's best love song ever; it's in my top 3 Beatle tracks (along with "A Day In The Life" and "Hey Jude") any time I try to make such a list. (And we share a love of "Hey Bulldog," which always makes my top 10.) Paul's other contributions to side 2 are great, and I like all of John's (although I probably admire the production"Tomorrow Never Knows" more than I like it as a song). George's track is very nice as well.
On YS 1, I like all the tracks, but am not as impressed with George's pair as some here are. "All Together Now" has a warm spot in my heart today, as I can not hear it without thinking of my then 3-year old son singing along "All Gedder NOW" and grinning as it ended--but that doesn't change the fact that it's no more than a ditty.
So, the bottomline is that from start to finish, the side of REVOLVER is superior, but as others have said, probably not by as wide a margin as it would seem at first glance.

It has to be Revolver 2 - not a duff song amongst that lot.
But much as "Let it Be" has been maligned over the years. And as others have rightly pointed out. "Yellow Submarine" is pretty damned good. I really love "Hey Bulldog" and the the rest of the tracks are no average Beatles songs. Especially when you watch the movie...............

REVOLVER, Side 2
REVOLVER is my favorite Beatles' album from perhaps my favorite Beatles' period, 1966. Still seemingly Moptops to the unsuspecting, there was a whole lot more going on there. The emotional bond of these four was still intact as John was not to meet Yoko until November 1966(the seeds for division were actually sown as early as the walk off the stage at Candlestick).
SPLHCB gets more laurels, or at least it used to, but it must be remembered that REVOLVER was the last Beatles album to be chopped up for the U.S.(and perhaps elsewhere) so its greatness was not so apparent outside the U.K. until arguably 1987.
Hell, even George Harrison called the Revolver-era(and Rubber Soul) a good one band-wise. I'd argue that The Beatles were at the height of their collective, creative glory with Revolver. Revolver's greatness is not in the least dependent upon the times in which it was released. It can stand today by itself. SPLHCB is more dependent upon the times in which it was released.
I join the voices that YELLOW SUBMARINE, Side 1 is not chopped liver. Lennon and Harrison deliver at least two classics and Paul's "All Together Now" is one of the better "fun" songs from him.

Revolver 2. YS does not deserve the drubbing it's getting, with Hey Bulldog and 2 great Harrisongs, plus All You Need Is Love (maligned here on the board, cherished everywhere else.) But Paul hits s peak here, For No One being possibly his finest work, GTGYIML still sounds fresh. And John- Tomorrow Never Knows still sounds fresh (though I would like to hear this take without the seagull/paul's laugh loop) and Bird is one of their finest pieces of 2 minute guitar pop.

Absolutely true. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to buy a German import of Revolver (totally by chance) and that was how I first heard it. The US Revolver is not only not as good as Pepper, but probably isn't better than the US Rubber Soul. But the UK official Revolver is not only my favorite Beatles album, it is my favorite album by anyone!
