A bit sad that such a fine side of music as BFS Side 1 has to exit so soon.
You know, I was thinking a few days ago that the overall winner is not at all obvious. This is more interesting than I thought.
Let's have the next match quickly though - there's not much to talk about here.

I was a little surprised at the winner when I ran this on another board last year. The random nature of the draws means that two "heavyweights" may have to see each other before a "seeded" tournament, but I like doing it this way.

BFS S1 for me.
Sgt Pepper is the most over rated album in history and sounds dated these days. The first 3 songs and A Day in A Life are the only great songs on it. The rest are merely ok in my book with perhaps Within You Without You being in between the best and the rest.
BFS has grown in stature for me, it's the second best of the first 4 which I consider to be the best Beatles albums. The remaster has given me a greater appreciation for this album.

Sgt. Pepper may be a bit overrated, but the first side here has nowhere near a clunker (Mr. Moonlight, anyone?). That being said, Beatles for Sale 1 is actually a pretty darn strong batch of originals with two of their best covers as well. Well done, boys!

SP Side 1, as I dislike "She's Leaving Home" much less than I dislike "Mr. Moonlight". I like all the other songs on both sides, so otherwise it would be a coin flip for me.

A part of John Lennon was a genre of songs like "Mr. Moonlight" and "Angel Baby" which he recorded during the Rock-n-Roll sessions.
Loving these songs is loving John Lennon.

It has to be Pepper. But there are a few gems on For Sale. "No Reply" and "I'm a Loser" plus John's vocal delivery on "Rock 'n Roll Music". Then Paul's "I'll Follow the Sun" sounds like a song he could have wrote for the White Album. And Kansas City shows Paul's vocal skills.
But Pepper has too much quality and production to even give BFS more than a sniff of a chance.

BFS for me...
I like this album in comparison because it's still the era of get in the studio, record the songs and get back out on the road......plus i think it's a great selection of songs, a good mix of covers and originals..
How good is Rock and Roll Music...when i was learning guitar i loved playing Mr Moonlight..some really quirky things happening in that song.some great use of dynamics....
Next to Abbey Road Pepper is the most over produced and arranged album in their canon, i do like Pepper, it's so different to their previous stuff but i think it's a little over rated...

Great post fabfour! I love your observation about The Beatles just going in the studio, recording songs and hitting the road again to tour(yet still making incredible music). I always choke-up when I read a Beatles book and get to the part where they stop touring after August 1966. Right there was the end of the band. The Beatles as a real, organic, functioning band ended when they walked off the stage at Candlestick Park. A rock and roll band that doesn't play live is only half a band as Keith Richards said. I haven't voted yet and fabfour's observant post will make me think on it more. There is a special aura about Pepper but man it is "Flower Power" and flower power was crap! Talk about a deadend.

PEPPER in a landslide.
SGT PEPPER is over-rated if, like many, you call it the greatest album ever (it isn't REVOLVER is in my opinion), but it is still fantastic and groundbreaking. I do think "I'm A Loser" is an important song (first Dylan influence) and "I'll Follow The Sun" and "No Reply" are excellent pop, but it doesn't come close to PEPPER.

SGT. PEPPER, Side 1
There, I voted for Pepper. Actually, "Baby In Black" cost my vote for BFS. That one's not bad but kind of lightweight for the subject matter, being in a waltz and all.
Pepper was The Beatles' highwater mark for influence; after Pepper the Fabs were still making great music but not leading the pack. In fact, The Beatles were trying to catch up as rock bands were going back to the basics, the blues and rock. The Stones released "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in early May of 1968.
In the Tony Sanchez book Up And Down With The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger comments to Keith Richards, "There was nothing 'flower power' about "Jumpin Jack Flash,' was there."
It is a shame that Pepper is tagged to flower power; dates it considerably.

'Pepper' has a vibe all of its own -- a sound, an aura. I love its spirit of discovery and musical adventure -- and the collaborative closeness of Lennon and McCartney that is evident throughout. I don't think of it as a 'flower power' album. 'Pepper' is neither sappy nor over-sentimental...it's songs are nicely judged and well balanced.
As far as side one is concerned, the only song I'm slightly ambivalent about is 'She's leaving home' -- but even this track fits in with the general tone and ambience of the album. Side one of 'Pepper' is awesome - a real high-water mark for the Beatles.

SGT. PEPPER, Side 1
BFS is probably my least favorite of the early LPs. I love Pepper (I prefer side 2) and even with the maudlin "She's Leaving Home" it still outranks BFS by miles.

PEPPER 1 for me.
There are a lot of sides that can beat SP 1. The individual tracks are all OK (except "Fixing A Hole," which I think is fabulous). As a unit, though--an album side--it works quite well.
I do like "No Reply" and the cover of "Rock And Roll Music" quite a bit, but again, the side is marred by "Mr. Moonlight" and "Baby's In Black" (even though I do love the harmonies of the latter). Again, as a unit, BFS 1 suffers in too many places for me to give it serious consideration over SP 1.

SGT1. I actually was on a Sgt Peppers kick when I got the Mono Remaster CD. So great. That being said the suprise of the whole remasters was Beatles For Sale In Stereo..A Real WOW!! Sounds so good and make that LP so much better for it. BFS starts out so strong but putters out with some questionable remakes. Had it been all Lennon/McCartnet Tracks I think it could have been among the best of the early LP. I mean No Reply,I'm A Loser,I'll Follow The Sun,Every Little Thing,I Don't Want To Spoil The Party,What Your Doing etc..Great stuff. A Few covers are really good but at this point there seems to be too many.

SP1. Closer than I thought, but it's almost completely great, while BFS1 has some so-so moments, most notably Kansas City.
