THE BEATLES, Side 3
"Birthday" 2:42 "Yer Blues" 4:01 "Mother Nature's Son" 2:48 "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" 2:24 "Sexy Sadie" 3:15 "Helter Skelter" 4:29 "Long, Long, Long" 3:04
HELP!, Side 2
"Act Naturally" 2:29 "It's Only Love" 1:54 "You Like Me Too Much" 2:35 "Tell Me What You See" 2:36 "I've Just Seen a Face" 2:04 "Yesterday" 2:03 "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" 2:53
The non-soundtrack side of HELP! draw some tough competition.
But then, which album side ISN'T tough??

The Beatles, Side 3
Here's how I did it:
Songs 1: "Birthday" 2:42 "Act Naturally" 2:29
Birthday easily wins over yet another Ringo novelty song. One point for TB-3
Songs 2 "Yer Blues" 4:01 "It's Only Love" 1:54
Evil pairing. Two great Lennon songs. "It's Only Love" barely wins. One point to H-2.
Songs 3 "Mother Nature's Son" 2:48 "You Like Me Too Much" 2:35
Mother Nature handily beats a rather pedestrian George song. Another point for TB-3.
Songs 4 "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" 2:24 "Tell Me What You See" 2:36
Monkey wins, point 3 for TB-3
Songs 5 "Sexy Sadie" 3:15 "I've Just Seen a Face" 2:04
Face wins, give H-2 point 2!
Songs 6 "Helter Skelter" 4:29 "Yesterday"
Loud Paul versus mellow Paul. Loud Paul wins here. TB-3 is at 4.
Songs 7 "Long, Long, Long" 3:04 "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" 2:53
George wins and thus TB-3 wins 5-2. See Winston, its easy!

I went with the White Album side 3. While Help has two of my favorites (Yesterday and I've Just Seen A Face) the White Album just has more going for it overall. It has three excellent rockers (Helter Skelter, Me And My Monkey and Birthday) compared to just one (Dizzy Miss Lizzie) on Help. Mother Nature's Son and It's Only Love kind of balance off. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Yer Blues, Sexy Sadie or Long Long Long, I'd take that trio over Act Naturally, You Like Me Too Much, and Tell Me What You See. So it's TB3 in a closer choice than I might have expected.

I voted for Help..side 2
This was the hardest tourney for me to vote in so far but i believe Help is a better album than TB,certainly better than side 3 of TB ......
It's a strange album the White album,i rate it quite low in comparison to all the other Beatles albums,it definitely is a precursor to their respective solo careers and with that in mind i don't really rate it as a compleat Beatles album....

For me, it's Help 2. There are two many songs that drag on WA 3. The couple of good songs ("Birthday", "Helter Skelter") don't outweigh the dead weight ("Monkey", "Sadie", "Long Long Long"). "Yer Blues" is a good song, though the "Rock 'n' Roll Circus" version is more powerful, IMO. "Mother Nature's Son" is wimpy. "Help!" has the bouncy "You Like Me Too Much" and also "Tell Me What You See," not George's best, but they showed he was improving. "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" and "Act Naturally" are great covers. "It's Only Love" is one of John's best songs of the period. "I've Just Seen a Face" is also very good. And "Yesterday" showed the Beatles weren't kid's stuff anymore.
I really love "Birthday" and "Helter Skelter" and I know I picked a side of MMT basically on the strength of "Walrus," but neither of those songs approach "Walrus," through "Helter Skelter" is a strong customer.

For me, no moody cogitations, no Guinness, no angst necessary.
Side 3 of the WHITE ALBUM is just terrific; only the opener Birthday is the slightest iffy in any way. The rest of the side is superb. Look at what you've got - Yer Blues, Monkey, Helter Skelter as the tracks with unsubtle but breathtaking punch; Mother Nature's Son is Macca with the sugar in check; Sexy Sadie is Lennon vitriol with a little finesse; and Long Long Long is a beautiful song where George Harrison declares his love for his god.
Side 2 of HELP!? Nothing there for me - yeah, some nice pop but that's all. After this they got really serious. But for now, Help! is the album where they barely trod water.
So the McCabe nod goes to Side 3 of TWA.

Help - side 2 -- Joey, you've put 'Help side 1' in the thread title!
The White Album, side 3, probably more than any other side of a Beatles record, has faded in my estimation over the years. I used to really like its combination of rocking tracks and mellow, reflective songs -- its light and shade. Nowadays most of it just leaves me feeling vaguely nonplussed....a real pity. Ultimately the songs on WA3 are too slight to leave a lasting impression...
'Helter skelter' is an exercise in noise, 'Birthday' is an impromptu throwaway, 'Monkey' is trite and 'Yer Blues' is poorly recorded and sounds far better - like a proper blues song - on the rolling Stones 'R&R Circus'. I used to love 'Sexy Sadie', but it sounds laboured and gripey to my ears these days.
If I had to put on a side of Beatles music today and these were the two alternatives, I would play Help, side 2...lighter on its feet, a bit lightweight too, but more upbeat, more enjoyable.

TB3
Both have songs I love, and both have songs I'm meh about, in about equal proportions. But there's more bang for your buck on side 3 of the white album.

I'd have to go for TB 3
H 2 has some good songs like It's Only Love and Yesterday but the rest of the songs are abit light although they're alot of fun such as Tell Me What You See and You Like Me Too Much and Dizzy Miss Lizzy is a nice closer.
TB 3 has some great rock tracks and great ballads and each song is a winner in my book. The Beatles should have toured behind this album, some of these tracks were screaming to be played live but I will concede that maybe a Stones or a Who would have made better versions of the rock tracks , I have always felt that there was always something lacking in Yer Blues and Monkey and when I heard Yer Blues on R'n'R Circus I knew why.

I've fixed the title--thanks! You summed up in one sentence what I think is the main criteria for making a choice in this tourney. Having said that, I have said many times in these games that any reason for voting for or against an entry is as valid as another. JcS

I feel exactly the same way (as apparently do a few others here). I think "Yer Blues" is a good song that simply isn't done that well on THE WHITE ALBUM. Not only do I love the version on ROCK & ROLL CIRCUS, I also prefer the LIVE PEACE IN TORONTO version (as well as my son's home-made version)
Also I'm noticing again the wide variety of opinion of songs on THE WHITE ALBUM. The songs touted as great by some are panned by others and vice versa. I know of no other Beatles album where opinions vary so widely.

HELP!, Side 2
I've Just Seen a Face is outstanding. Side 3 of the White Album is just not as listenable for me anymore.

Yes this side of the White Album is questionable in quality. Although I like Mother Nature's Son on a warm summer's day and Helter Skelter for it's rock sound. Even Long, Long Long sounds much better re-mastered but there is nothing on TB3 that is in the First Division of Beatles tracks (there's an idea for a thread!).
So Help side 2 it is.

I think Rubber Soul was the last real Beatles album. I think it was Revolver ... But there are tracks on Revolver like Good Day Sunshine which I think is Paul solo and there's also his For No One with minimal input from the others. I doubt Love You To is a full band effort. There are however some great band efforts on that record... mainly the Lennon tracks.

Easily THE BEATLES -SIDE 3 for me. A lot of variety and rock there, and I think sides 1 and 3 are the best of the White Album.
Now, about HELP! S2... I have always thought it sucked. Why? Because I grew up with the superior U.S. albums of BEATLES VI and RUBBER SOUL (US), - and to a much lesser extent, YESTERDAY...AND TODAY, and thus by the time I got to the UK version of the HELP! LP, it just felt like those songs never really belonged on the HELP! set. For me, the UK Side 1 of HELP! is where it's at. Side two always felt like filler. Good songs there, but just didn't feel like they belonged. And I still prefer the U.S. soundtrack to HELP!, even if I'm the only person in the world who does ... I'm a movie fan and I appreciate the incidental muzak there too. When I want to hear songs from the movie HELP!, the U.S. soundtrack is what I play. And actually, it's one of my most repeatedly played of all CDs.

I also agree that H-2 sucks, I think it's the worst side of any Beatles album.

Beatles3..This was easy..I think side 2 Of Help is the most chaotic mess the Fabs ever created..There is no flow and while some of the tracks are really good the consistency here is weak..My least Favorite Beatles LP side of all.

White Album. Help! is one of my favorite albums, but everything great is on side 1. Monkey is an underrated gem. Some weak stuff here, but Birthday wins the side from me, as it's the day after Ringo's birthday concert and that's what the two Beatles rocked through...its moved up on my list of favorites.
