I thought this would be tough, but in my head I was thinking of the songs on MEET THE BEATLES side 1 vs. WITH THE BEATLES side 1. Once I looked at the WTB song list and the RUBBER SOUL song list, I went with RUBBER SOUL.
RS has two classics (Norwegian Wood and Nowhere Man) compared to one for WTB (All My Loving). RS also has two near classics and personal favorites (Drive My Car and The Word) vs one for WTB (It Won't Be Long). All I've Got To Do and You Won't See Me balance off. I give Don't Bother Me a very slight edge over Think For Yourself, but Michelle edges Till There Was You since Paul wrote it. That either Michelle or Think For Yourself would get my vote as weakest RS side 1 track is a pretty good indication of how strong the side is (though I still like I've Just Seen A Face from the US version of RUBBER SOUL as an opener). As to the other WTB songs I didn't mention, Please Mr Postman is my favorite version of that song (great vocals) while Little Child has a nice harmonica, but not much else.

I could use the American releases up through REVOLVER, and then MMT and HEY JUDE to round out the field, I suppose. JcS

I'm going to be the odd man out (so far) and pick WTB. For one, I love WTB, especially in stereo, even with the lousy mix. For another, the UK version of RS can't beat the U.S. version.

I went with WTB-1 because there is not just some rock and roll but two of the bluesiest songs The Beatles ever wrote: "All I've Got to Do" and "Little Child."
"All I've Got To Do" is one of the all-time great Beatles' hidden gems. Wouldn't it have been cool to see this one done live, at a place like the Cavern!
"It Won't Be Long," "All My Loving" and "Don't Bother Me" rock hard. "Please Mister Postman" is another great vocal performance. Only "Till There Was Spew" gives me pause but I still like George's guitar work there.
Rubber Soul is a great album for pop and folkie music but where is the rock? "Drive My Car" is almost better Motown than real Motown but all the other mid-tempo stuff can bring me down unless I am playing RS and am in the company of a woman as beautiful as Patti Boyd Harrison Clapton or Marianne Faithfull(pre-1970). RS-1 is amazing but WTB-1 is even more so.

WTB - 1 but only just.
Just prefer early rocking Beatles, that's all.

With the Beatles Side 1 Great album, passionate, rocks nicely, yaddah yaddah. But it cannot beat ...
Rubber Soul Side 1 The album's opener Drive My Car announces to the world that the lovable mop-tops are gone. Serious band now, fans. (BTW I do wish people who rave on about the shorter US bastardized album of the same name would wise up to what the group were up to: and as for I've Just Seen A Face as an album opener ... um, no thank you; little pop ditties are not quite the thing now!) Think of Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, The Word, Think For Yourself - even You Won't see Me. I like these Beatles - great melodies, great lyrics, much, much less of "I love you you love me we are in love". Oops, here comes Michelle, spoiling it a bit - but that's Paulie, and he's in the band too.
R Soul, easily.

RS 1, as I love ( or at least like) all the tracks. As for WTB, I don't like "Don't Bother Me", even though others like it. So there! ;D

Mr. McCabe,
I find calling I've Just Seen A Face "a little pop ditty" is puzzling. It is a more mature brand of folk-pop-rock in my opinion. However, I do agree that the American Rubber Soul is not neccessarily superior. After all, in addition to "Drive My Car" it is missing crucial folk-rock gems "Nowhere Man" and "If I Needed Someone". I do like the US "It's Only Love" over the UK "What Goes On", but overall I'd take the UK version, though my favorite RS would be a combination of the two (with "We Can Work It Out" and "Day Tripper" in there as well.

WTB side 1
This is a rollicking collection of early Beatles songs that i like better than RS side 1....
It Won't Be Long is a ripper song musically, i really dig the arrangement in this song...great work by the band....

Mr. McCabe, I find calling I've Just Seen A Face "a little pop ditty" is puzzling. It is a more mature brand of folk-pop-rock in my opinion. I have no problem at all with you finding it puzzling, and having another opinion. My angle on this is that it is a Help-era song, and does not belong on R Soul, where the Beatles had made a huge spurt forward. Similarly, It's Only Love is not a Rubber Soul era song. And certainly Wait, on the UK and US albums is a Help-era song, and it shows.

RUBBER SOUL 1 for me.
It would be possible--easy, in fact--to construct a side of material from WTB to beat this side of RS. But I'm not that crazy about the two covers. "Till There Was You" is just a lame choice for this album, save the guitar work, and "Please Mr. Postman" just sounds stiff to me, a by-the-numbers kind of thing. "All I've Got To Do" isn't top drawer material, either.
On the other hand, there's nothing on RS 1 that I don't like, at least a little. "Drive My Car" is a great opener and "Norwegian Wood" makes for a wonderful second salvo to start the side. "Michelle" isn't quite the closer than I'd like, but it hardly ruins the entire mood of this side.

Rubber Soul, Side 1, and it's a much closer call than I would have thought.

RS1. No wait, WTB. No...RS. Hold it- WTB. This one is impossible, I love them too much, they line up exceptionally close and each has songs we can't drop from the contest.
I went with WTB.
