3 -- A good song on the generally forgettable DARK HORSE album. George's voice is a little shaky, but I really enjoy the melody.

The lyrics to this George song....
Somebody brought the juicer I thought I'd take a sip Came off the rails so crazy My senses took a dip Before the bottle hit the floor And I'd had time to think I was blinded by desire The elephant turned pink
The rest is simply shady It's all been done before But it doesn't make life simple That's for sure You may think about a lady Cause yourself a minor war And your life won't be so easy anymore
No sooner had I sown it When I began to reap I was torn from shallow water And plunged into the deep And as I started drowning I clung onto a straw That somehow kept me floating While my madness craved for more
The rest is simply shady It's all been done and more But it doesn't make life easy That's for sure
A pebble in the ocean Must cause some kind of stir And witnessed by the silence Will reach from here to there The action that I've started Sometime I'll have to face My influence in motion Rebounding back through space
The rest is simply shady It's all been done before But it doesn't make life simple That's for sure You may think of Sexy Sadie Let her in through your front door And your life won't be so easy anymore

This song has you wondering when it first starts but then as it builds it turns out to be quite OK..
It's a 3 from me....

4 - This is the best song on Dark Horse for my money, the raspy George vocal suits it to a tee.
I like the lyrics too, sounds like George is owning up to something.
Hardcore George fans swear by this album and rate it very high and this song would be one of the reasons why.

One of the better songs (along with the title song and the instrumental "Hari's On Tour Express") on a fairly mediocre album (only 9 songs and one a terrible cover of "Bye Bye Love"). I like the guitar and lyrics. I think this was a rough period in George's personal life and the lyric reflects that. Melody is decent. Suffers from the typical George disease of being a little too long (in this case dragging a bit in the middle, as the ending is nice). No way is this a 4. It is closer to a 2 than it is to a 4, but I'll give it a 3.

A 3.5 for me.
1974 was a very tough time for George. He almost went completely to the "Dark Side" meaning the full blown Rock and Roll hedonistic lifestyle of sex, drugs and R&R. This was confirmed by Klaus Voorman who was so afraid back then that George would abandon his spiritual quest that he had started back in 1965 or 1966 with the discovery of Indian music.
While George never completely gave up alcohol or drugs and never shaved his head, his spiritual beliefs always prevailed over the excesses of Rock stardom. In 1974, that was all almost lost and it was simply a shady period.
I love the guitar work on it but it is the raspy vocal that keeps this from being a 4 with me although maybe, as some here suggest, the raspy vocal works per the mood of the song.
I discovered this album really for the first time a couple years ago when poster Nine did a "Spotlight" Thread on it.

Raspy voice?

Raspy voice? Listen to the way he sings "Somebody.." in the first line of the song. He definitely has something going on that is not part of his usual voice.

This is George coming up with some of his most clever material in a while. This one and So Sad were the standouts from Dark Horse along with the title track which was even better. I give this a solid 3. Both lyrically and musically George does the job.

He sings it like this : That reached from here to thurrrrrrrrr He did that on Do You Want to Know a Secret as well. Nobody knows how much I really love you Nobody know how much I really kurrrrrrrrrrrr (care)

I also love the way George name checks "Sexy Sadie" in the lyrics. (Sometimes name checking can be a fun thing).

Thanks to the board members I can newly appreciate the lyrics of this song. However , that is as far I go. I only rate it as 2 (average). I think George's singing is mediocre here. His voice is not sufficient, IMO. He strains.
I am sorry to report that I gain only a small amount of pleasure from Harrison's 1974 and 1975 work. If I were to attempt to compile a CD-R, or playlist, from the combined Extra Texture and Dark Horse material that I personally find appealing, I would be stuck after about five or six selections.

Correction: A pebble in the ocean Must (have) cause some kind of stir And witnessed by the silence Will reach That reached from here to there Notice the way he pronounces there to rhyme with stir ? He sings it like this : That reached from here to thurrrrrrrrr He did that on Do You Want to Know a Secret as well. Nobody knows how much I really love you Nobody know how much I really kurrrrrrrrrrrr (care) Funny you mention that in DYWTKAS. I've noticed that at times abour George, especially on early stuf. I've always just atributed it to his thick accent, whci seems thicker than that of the other fabs. George's voice during this period is always brought up as a deciding factor and I just don't get it. We know he blew out his voice touring, but did he record right off the road (not smart), or was he simply trying to sing a bit differently? It also sounds to me like there is a studio effect on his vocal. I guess my point is that "yes", his voice sounds a bit forced at times on this record but for me it takes nothing at all away from the music. If anything it makes it a little more interesting. Doesn't hurt the music at all for me.

Just some songs needed to be tidied up and I wish he had dropped the Krshna references, he couldn't help himself. I personally rate, Simply Shady, Maya Love, So Sad but the singing is a little mournful, Dark Horse and Far East Man.

I always liked his voice on the song Dark Horse, the way he really growls out the lyrics. And I like Ding Dong, Ding Dong.
I don't care much for anything else on the album. If the Beatles were together in '75, he might have gotten a song on the album.
This song, a 1.5. It has potential. I good producer could have made this a 3 or 4. As it is, it's a muddled mess.

This one is very good, one of the standouts on the album (behind Dark Horse and So Sad). I give it a 3.5.

I'll give it a 2.5. Like the refrain and don't think the vocals are that bad (although you can clearly hear his rough patches). Man, I love George's slide guitar even more after all these years.
And the lyrics here are not bad (and certainly not preachy, as George was accused of during this period.)

I'm not sure I re-listened to this on the first go round. I'm not sure I've listened to the words before. Maybe not since I first heard the song. I'll have to bump the rating up to 2.5 and listen to it again before long, maybe put it in my new songs playlist. It is still a sloppy sounding recording though.

1.5. George seems like he's just trying to recycle some old riffs and see if it comes up to anything. Even George seems tired and bored with the song by the end as it drags to its pointless conclusion.

DARK HORSE, like WILD LIFE is not as bad an album as the critics made it out to be. Both albums are kind of slight. Not many songs, some of which are padded out in length, plus a cover song. Paul has two nonsense songs (one of which "Mumbo" I like) and George has an instrumental (which I like). Nevertheless these are two albums were two outstanding musician/performers are not at the peak of their game by any means.
