2 -- I almost rated this lower... I really don't much care for this version, nor Paul's singing on it. I can't stand his "echoing" that he does on this, and especially that "ohh...oh...oh...." he repeats later on. You know, every time I'm listing my "worst McCartney albums" I always forget about this one. I've never liked "The Russian Album" (I much prefer RUN DEVIL RUN).

I don't like the echo but the arrangement is much closer to Fats than Lennon's. Still, lennon sings with gusto-live-like, Paul is almost going through the motions.
Paul did sing it with more gusto when he performed it live.

Here are the lyrics....
You made me cry when you said goodbye. Ain't that a shame, Oh my tears fell like rain. Ain't that a shame, You're the one to blame.
You broke my heart when you said we'd part. Ain't that a shame, Oh my tears fell like rain. Ain't that a shame, You're the one to blame.
You're the one to blame.
You made me cry when you said goodbye. Ain't that a shame, Oh my tears fell like rain. Ain't that a shame, You're the one to blame.
Oh well good goodbye although i'm gonna cry. Ain't that a shame, Oh my tears fell like rain. Ain't that a shame, You're the one to blame

3 I like the piano. But I'll say that Paul doing a Fats Domino cover had the potential to be great. This isn't up to that standard.

Oh, I'll give this a 3 although I debated a 2.75.
When I first heard this album I felt that Paul sounded tired and lost, like he was trying to find himself after what had been a rough 1980's for him in many respects. Paul always turns to Rock and Roll when needing to clear his head(as he would do again years later with Run Devil Run).
I had this album on vinyl then c.d. but I hardly ever play it. This song was actually a better one from the album.

Like most of the Russian album, this is a workmanlike retread of a rock classic, but no more than that. Given the extent to which this was stuff in their very musical bones, both John and Paul failed to capture what it actually meant to them in their respective homage albums, although Paul missed the point a little less comprehensively than John. This is a 2.5, but only just.

I admit that is not the best version Paul has done of that song. I give it somewhere between 2.5 and 3. I like it better than John's version mainly because of that awful horn arrangement in John's .
I like this version better. I like the more bluesy approach Paul takes on both versions.

2 (average). Could have been much better with a bit of extra work and attention. Choba B CCCP was not meant as a major work though, just a spur of the moment thing.
Twenty Flight Rock and Lucille are the tracks from this album that I favour most.

I'll give it a 3. It's isn't the best arrangement or the best production, but comparing it to Lennon's version, this beats the heck out of that.

I had forgotten that this song was done by Paul and band during the 1989/1990 tour and that this and "Twenty Flight Rock" appear on Tripping the Live Fantastic. At the time I thought these two old Rock and Roll standards were cool but in hindsight it is like shit, I have never seen Paul live before, I'd rather have two more original songs than covers. My memory fades but I think Paul dropped both of these by his spectacular tour closing concert at Soldier Field Chicago in late July 1990. He for sure dropped "Twenty Flight Rock." He added some originals which was cool. Seeing "The Lennon Medley" live that warm, humid night in Chicago in the old Soldier Field(before it was remodeled to look like a stupid space ship, "The Mistake By the Lake") was my greatest live concert moment ever.

I liked it when his did this in concert better, but the recording is not that bad.... 2.5
Does anyone remember his little intro story to this song that he told in concert, something along the lines of talking to Fats about coming to New Orleans and then he says something along the lines of...well, Fats...."you made, me cry". OK, I'm having trouble explaining it. You had to be there. Or, maybe not:).

How could you forget. I have the link to the rehearsal for that tour on this thread. I liked that version. Paul tweaked his setlist during the long World Tour but I can't remember when. I had the good luck to see Paul live two of his three Chicago shows in early December 1989, with me going to the shows on Dec. 3 and 4 but missing the 5th. Paul had started the tour in Europe on the first leg starting in late September 1989, then opened in L.A. like November 23, 1989, for five concerts there! Next was Chicago(3 nights), one night each in Toronto and Montreal then four big nights in NYC at MSG before breaking for Christmas. I always thought that it was cool seeing him in 1989. I guess because that decade started off so badly for us fans with the Japanese bust but then much worse, John's murder. It meant a lot to me to see Paul close out the 1980's with a triumphant return to the U.S. Then he spent all of January 1990 in England before coming back to the U.S. all of February and I saw him both nights in Indianapolis on Feb. 14 and 15, 1990. This is where I can't remember if the set list was slightly tweaked from December. I don't recall "Twenty Flight Rock" in Indy. Paul then went around the world and I finally saw him July 29, 1990, at the spectacular finale at Soldier Field, Chicago where he had added "Let 'Em In," "Birthday" and the "Lennon Medley." Those were heady times.
