EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THIS!
I've been thinking of starting an ongoing series where every day or so I will present a different solo song by either John, Paul, George or Ringo. Some of us may be already familiar with the song, some others may not be. What I would like to do is two-fold... First, I'd like to present an opportunity for some folks to listen to solo songs they might not have heard about, and maybe discover a new song they like. Second, I'd like for everyone to discuss their feelings on the songs, expressing their likes and dislikes.
If you don't know the song, all you have to do is click on the link and play it. Try to give it a fair chance, come back and let us know what you think.
You might even choose to rate the song on a 1 to 4 basis, using the following guide:
4 = Exceptional 3 = Good 2 = Average 1 = Crap

Today's song is Ringo Starr's TUFF LOVE (from the album LIVERPOOL 8, 2008)
Add a comment and/or Vote 1 to 4 on the song as follows: 4 = Exceptional 3 = Good 2 = Average 1 = Crap

Fun idea Joe.
I start by saying I could not for the life of me remember this song from just memory. I own the album and I love the title song and I remember being excited that Dave Stewart was the album's producer.
I was overall disappointed in the album and I must also admit that right off the bat thought I would dislike this song because of the spelling "Tuff" instead or "Tough." I tend to not like songs that use texting or computer speak spelling.
I was pleasantly surprised then. I rate this a 3 for "Good." I like the clean musical backing and the piano intro was nice. Ringo is solid on vocal and his drumming strong.
I still wish the word was spelled right! ;D If that is all I complain about with a later day Ringo song then that is not too bad. I'd listen to this song again!

I also give it a 3. The psychedelic effects in the production were what brought it above average. The basic song and vocal would have put it at a 2.

I would also give this song a solid "3". I think it's a good Ringo song, love the feel of it, the way Ringo performs it. A little Beatle=esque in the harmonies, and pyschedliia.

The lyrics are so PC. Peace, hope, etc. That is called trying to hard to be relevant as with Phil Collins and Another Day in Paradise or even Paul with Ebony and Ivory. Big mistake lyrically-nothing subtle at all- it hits you over the head and gives you a headache. Lyrics are a bit too hippyish. I really didn't like the song until almost a minute or more into it when it starts to sound like Now and Then (now its time to make up your mind). Then it improved somewhat. The piano sound like Fine Line in slow motion. There is a little imperfect pitching that was a bit annoying. Whats with the whirling space ship effects also? Overall effect is not terrible though. I give it a 2.

Good idea, Joe. Glad you're picking out the obscure ones.
Liverpool 8 was a disappointment for me, too...I knew when I saw that half the songs had "love" in the title it wasn't going to be very original. This song is ok filler, lyrics are very by the numbers, not something I go back to much. I give it 2 1/2 starrs.

I don't dislike it. I think it's one of the better songs on the album, but I like Liverpool 8, Think About You and For Love a bit more. If Joe's rating system had five levels I'd rate it at 3 (average, 50%, right in the middle), but it doesn't, so it's 2 for me.

Good idea, Joe, especially using the more obscure songs.
I'd forgotten about this, but I have to say the song stands on its own quite well. The lyrics are typical Ringo ... peace and love stuff, but the instrumentation is great. That seems to be his strength in recent years on his albums and it's something that doesn't get much notice.
I'd give this a 3.

That was fun- I never heard it. Used to buy every solo LP, just don't keep up.
Very solid 3.

I wasn't a big fan of Liverpool 8 when it came out. I liked Choose Love a hell of a lot and Y Not too.
I like any post where I can mention my Zune. I have deleted 2 songs from Liverpool 8 from my Ringo playlist. They are Love Is and For Love. Sorry IcC. My Ringo playlist needs a lot of attention. Right now, there are 112 songs in it.
Just skipping through L8, I think it deserves another listen or two but Tuff Love still isn't grabbing me. By the way, the Tuff spelling has been used in several songs prior to the texting era. Ain't That Tuff Enough and a title you'll really love, Tuff E Nuff, a Guess Who song from 1965.

I don't do the 5-point rating thing, sorry (even with movies I do the traditional four-star system). Just think of my level 2 as being "middle" (it also means "average"). Thanks for participating -- I hope others will come aboard too.

Hey, you overlooked my post above.

2 - 3
Not bad. I have never heard it before. Not owning much in the way of solo stuff.
It's been mastered far too loud so it hurts my ears. Shame that.

I don't really like it I give it a 2.
I don't have Ringo's last 3 albums so this is the first time I heard this song and it has the same average quality as Vertical Man , IMO. The Ringo sound hasn't changed much.

I think that since "Time Takes Time" Ringo has delivered solid well produced albums. The songs are often listenable though forgettable. They are somewhat formulaic in milking his Beatle associations but that is part of the charm I guess.
I never expect much from Richie , occasionally he comes out with a very good track. although if I'm honest most of his stuff is average fodder these days.
That's what this track is. 2

My question for us that are "late to the game" is can we vote on these "older posts", since the thread seems to suggest a song of the day approach. Anyway, I've quoted Stavros here, because he's captured my sentiments on much of Ringo's solo stuff for the past 4 albums, "listenable, but forgettable." This song is a perfect example. While I have all of Ritchie's solo stuff, I had NO memory of this one. While the melody of the song is not bad, this is one of Ringo's more atonal vocals (not a good thing). And, I'm just so sick of the "peace and love" stuff. So, I'd give this one a 1.

I'm posting a song per day when i can, but the threads can last indefinitely..! I really want to encourage all members to participate.... even if you don't know the song, that's why there's a link so you can try it out ! The votes are not tabulated or anything...
