The lyrics...
Spies Like Us Paul McCartney
Ooh ooh what do you do No one else can dance like you So what's all the fuss There ain't nobody that spies like us
Hey hey what do you say Someone took your plans away So what's all the fuss There ain't nobody that spies like us
Hey don't feel afraid Of an undercover aid There's no need to fuss There ain't nobody that spies like us
Spies like us
We don't know the meaning of fear We play every minute by ear One for all and all for one Everybody's on the run Especially at this time of year
Ooh ooh what do you do No one else can dance like you So what's all the fuss There ain't nobody got spies like us
Hey hey what do you say No one else can look that way So what's all the fuss There ain't nobody got spies like us
We get there by hook or by crook We don't do a thing by the book Never needed special clothes How we did it no one knows I guess we must have had what it took
Ooh ooh, ooh Oh when things get tough (Oh when things get tough) Guys like us act rough (Guys like us act rough)
Hey hey what do you say Someone took your plans away So what's all the fuss There ain't nobody that spies like us
Spies like us

3 -- I want to defend this single. When it came out I really didn't like it. But I was listening to Ken Michaels' weekly Beatles radio show back in the day and he was playing extended versions. At one point he commented on Paul's "really rocking out" at the end, and somehow it clicked for me. At first the song is offputting with its simplistic words at the beginning ("Ooh, Ooh, Whaddaya Do")... but I have come to love the "hard rock guitar". It should be remembered that this is, after all, a comedy movie soundtrack song and so I give the words some leeway for that. I think it's got a hard-edged sound to it, and I like the way Paul rocks out at the end.

I'd be extremely surprised if the people who asked Paul to provide a song for their movie weren't a tad disappointed with what was delivered...maybe more than a tad if we want to be realistic....

I think the song was better than the movie. And 'realistically', the song made it to #7 in the US .... it was Paul's last Top Ten single.

I don't like the song and hate the movie (although I'm a HUGE classic SNL fan). How it made the top ten is beyond me. It sounds like he wrote it on the spot, which to me was never one of his skills (like a bear needs a break).

I was 1st Year law school when this came out and much too busy to think much about it although I found time to buy the picture sleeve 45. A 2 is average so I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. The movie was rather poor. The video might be the best thing about both the song and the movie!

3. I don't think they were disappointed at all in getting a hit record with their movie title in it. Its a comedy film and it fit perfectly. And its catchy 'hey don't be afraid of an undercover raid" and especially the outro. The extended version is better.

1.5
It's not a complete disaster. Just a moderate disaster. The disaster in question is that it sounds horrible.

I'm always amazed that this made #7 because I almost never heard it on the radio when it came out (and I was listening to some top 40 at that time). I heard both "Press" and "My Brave Face" slot more.
I give this a weak 2 (actually vectis 1.5 might be a better score). It is my least favorite McCartney single. It is perhaps one of the weakest openings of any of Paul's songs. No real hook anywhere. More annoying than catchy.

Another one of those "not bad, but could have been much better" songs from Paul. 2 (average). Does anyone else hear a similarity with the Yes song, Owner Of A Lonely Heart, with regard to the use of synthesizer? At least I think it's a synthesizer.

Owner of a Lonely Heart was where Yes jumped the shark.

Playing the 1993 re-issued Press To Play with "Spies Like Us" as a bonus track.
Whoa Nelly! It is sounding pretty damn good but I don't know if it is the 1993 remastered sound(I had this on the 45 single previously) or all of the beer I drank tonight.
I think one can actually dance to this Macca song. After the danceable "I Saw Her Standing There," that seems to be a rarity for Paul songs except for, of course, "Mumbo" but one must dance naked to that, skin to the wind!
No matter what, I raise my score to a 3 from my too low 2. Ask me again tomorrow morning when the thrill is gone. ;D

3.0
Because I have heard some of the outtakes and they are great, the finished product sounds muddy for some reason but the fact that it rocks so hard at the end gets big points from me.

This song rocks. It still sounds good dispite the '80's production.
I'm going to give up a 4.0 on this one.

I'd be extremely surprised if the people who asked Paul to provide a song for their movie weren't a tad disappointed with what was delivered...maybe more than a tad if we want to be realistic.... It was the Bond people who were disappointed with Live and Let Die. I'm sure Aykroyd and Chase were terrible happy with this song for their movie. They look like they love it in the video.

I like the the wild ass ending and enjoyed the video (and seeing all of the examples of Paul lame wardrobe and poofy hair, circa 1985). 3 for trying.

Live and Let Die was a huge hit and a great song! So that's why they went next to Marvin Hamlish? (which was pretty much in the style of McCartney with Nobody Goes it Better)

(which was pretty much in the style of McCartney with Nobody Goes it Better) It was either Paul or George Martin who tells the story about taking Live and Let Die to the Bond people and them saying "That's a nice demo. When do we get the fininished song?" I think they really thought they'd get a traditional bluesy Bond style ballad from Paul. Of course, once the song was released, the traditional bluesy Bond song idea was gone for good. A few years later, we had Duran Duran.

If this was Paul "last top ten single" its not hard to figure out why it was his last. What a clunker. I don't remember ever hearing this one on the radio, so it wasn't much of a hit in my neck of the woods. Though I remember those days when the big movie companies would use rock songs (like this one) as little more than advertising jingles to promote their crappy movies. And geez, does anyone remember when Ackroyd and Chase were considered the hippest of the cutting edge comedians? To see them hamming it up like the lowest grade burlesque comedians makes me wonder if it was just all that high grade pot I was smoking back then that made Saturday Night Live seem so funny.
Though it was nice to see such a young, boyish, clean-cut McCartney.

This is probably the subject of another thread, but it's interesting that Paul seemed comfortable with aging gracefully for awhile (showing some grey in SLU, even up until Anthology). Then, he woke up one day and started employing all kinds of "trying to stop Mother Nature" behavior.
