I'm in the very early stages of planning a trip to America....
First port of call will be to San Francisco to watch a game of baseball at AT&T Park, travel across the Golden Gate bridge and check out Alcatraz and tourist things. I then want to take a bus trip from San Francisco to New York...
Any suggestions on the best route to get to New York would be welcome. I don't want to get there too quickly , i want to see some sights on the way...What am i going to do in New York...Check out the Dakota for one and take a walk through Hyde Park...that's the extent of the planning so far.

fabfour, are you really sure you want to take a bus all the way from San Francisco to New York? How many months do you have for your trip? That is a very long bus ride. I would be glad to meet you for a pint when you get to San Francisco.

Well, what sorts of sights do you want to see? The Greyhound routes aren't particularly picturesque.

I'd invite you to Indiana but Indiana may not be ready for you, fabfour! ;D
In the middle of the country hit St. Louis(not East St. Louis!) or Chicago.

For aonly a few dollars more than the Greyhound fare, you can book a trip on Amtrak. Much more comfortable trip, the loos are more likely to be operative, you can buy food and drink.

I would be glad to meet you for a pint when you get to San Francisco. I took a bus from San Diego to Seattle once (35 straight hours). Then, a few years later, I took a bus from San Diego to Mazatlan, Mexico and then Monterrey, Mexico to New York City. I wasn't much of a flyer back in my early 20's. What I did learn from my first long trip (the San Diego to Seattle) is to schedule the stops so that you sleep in a hotel every night. On my trip from San Diego to Mazatlan, I had about 3 sleep overs. From Monterrey to New York, I slept in Laredo, Houston, New Orleans, Nashville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, before getting to NY. Very comfortable and easy on the digestive system. But, back to the original question, just fly from SF to NY because there is nothing between the two coasts anyway. ;D
