3 -- George's Swan Song... the last song he sang on, just a month before he died. He wrote it along with his son Dhani. Sadly, George was too weak to play guitar on it.
I like the song and it's got some strong lyrics that I think are somewhat reflective on George's sad and inevitable condition at the end of his life. It's kind of a chilling song in that way.
George does a decent job on the vocal considering his health deterioration, but I must say I think I even like the version off CONCERT FOR GEORGE (by Samantha "Sam" Brown) even more.

Here are the lyrics.. You can take a horse to the water but you can't make him drink Oh no, oh no, oh no A friend of mine in so much misery Some people sail through life, but he has struck a reef I said 'hey man let's go out and get some wisdom' But first he turned on me, then he turned off his nervous system You take a horse to water but you can't make him drink Oh no, oh no, oh no You can have it all layed/staked out in front of you but it still don't make you think Oh no, oh no, oh no Someone I love is gotta problem Find more similar lyrics on mp3lyrics.com/XkuSome people thirst for truth, but he would like a drink I said 'Hey man this could turn out to be risky' He said 'everything's ok' as he downed another bottle of whiskey There's a preacher out there warned me about Satan Could be that he knows him Cause' He acts like he's possessed I said 'Hey man let's hear about God realisation For a change' he said "We ain't got time for that First you must hear the evils of fornication"

Sam Brown's performance is a highlight of the Concert For George to me.

4- I remained amazed as to how low key this song was publicity-wise.
It shows up only on Jools Holland's record. No single. No reappearance on Brainwashed.
It was a powerful piece. Unlike John, George pretty much knew this would be his swan song and delivered it.
Sam Brown did to it what Mary Chapin Carpenter did with Grow Old With Me, but the difference is that we still got a great version from George himself.

It shows up only on Jools Holland's record. No single. No reappearance on Brainwashed. True, and that's a shame. For the time being at least, it's stranded over on the Jools Holland album. I'd always wished Olivia and Dhani would/could have included it as part of BRAINWASHED. I liked the BRAINWASHED album overall but there were a few later tracks at the end I would have sacrificed for HORSE.

3 Typical good George. A strong opening. Nice horns. Good lyrics. Goes on a little too long.
I love the Concert For George, but I have to say there were many greater highlights for me than Sam Brown. I barely even remembered that she did this. Nothing against her. It is a good performance, but I would rate several other performances as "highlights".

2.5. Good effort for George. Nice horn arrangement and pretty good song overall. I can't go above 2.5 on it though because I can think of many of George's songs that are better. Allowing that it was his last effort, I will click on 3 for the vote.
You can hear George struggling in the last verse. Bless him for being able to finish this fine song. It makes me emotional.
I agree it is better than some of the tracks on Brainwashed. Brainwashed would be great with this as a bonus track and a few other bonus that didn't make it on proper albums.

4. A sample of that which we have lost. I wonder how much new music George would have presented us over the past decade if he had stayed in good health? Just the occasional release? Would he have worked in conjunction with his son on a regular basis? A bit of collaboration with Ringo? Don't think Paul would have been in the picture.

Where is your alternative George album then... you know, like the one's you ALWAYS make for Paulie

Like this song a lot. I wish it hadn't come under the circumstances it did.

A 3.75 for me. I like it a lot but cannot quite go to 4 but I am close! What a shame that this was all but forgotten on Jools' album! Simon Leng, an author Olivia and Dhani should admire, is likewise baffled at the complete lack of effort to promote Brainwashed and by extension this song! I wish more than us stalwarts knew about George's final music like this song and those that showed up on Brainwashed.

3.75. Like John I just can't quite give it a 4. Great to see George going out at the top of his game. Does anybody but me feel like George is doing a John imitation with the vocals? Reminds me a lot of "I'm Losing You."

Another song I don't have and it's a George song and a good one. If I remember correctly, it was on a charity album of some sort. Also, if I remember right, this was very late in the career.
It's a little noisy, busy sounding. Is that Eric. Nice solo.
3.5, 3.0 for the pole. Is this on Itunes?

Last song, huh. I thought so but he sounds so vibrant here. It's hard to imagine.
I was thinking it was on a Jools Holland album but he is a talk show host, is he not?
Do we know who did play the guitar solo if George didn't?

Do we know who did play the guitar solo if Geoerge didn't? Yes, Jools Holland is a talk show host, but previously he played keyboards for Squeeze, among other gigs. Oh, yes - my vote - I give it a 3! Not as good as My Sweet Lord or What is Life but still darn good!

Every once in awhile I also felt George was maybe struggling with breath just a tad.
It wasn't as bad as some of Paul's recent TV performances however.

I give this a little bit more than a 3. Actually, the Jools Holland album that this was part of includes lots of great collarborations. And I love Jools Hollands' Squeeze tunes, so I was excited about this collaboration (even under the circumstances).
The video below shows us Jools in his Squeeze, pre-TV talk show days, on the keyboards. The show was called Sunday Night and featured David Sanborn and Jools Holland as hosts.
