4 -- Strong rocker from Paul in the "Junior's Farm" vein. One of my favorite hard songs from Paul, and it feels so good to know he was able to do something like this so late in his career.

3 I really like how it goes from slow with the strings to a fast rocker and back to the mellow finish. Can't quite give it a 4, but it's a strong 3.

Here are the lyrics...
Only Mama Knows"
Well, I was found in the transit lounge Of a dirty airport town What was I doing on the road to ruin Well my mama laid me down My mama laid me down
Around my hand was a plastic band With a picture of my face I was crying, left to die In this godforsaken place This godforsaken place
[Chorus:] Only Mama knows What she laid me down In this godforsaken town She was running too What she was running from I always wondered I never knew Only Mama knows Only Mama knows
I'm passing through I'm on my way On the road, no ETA I'm passing through No fixed abode And that is why.... I need to try To hold on I've got to hold on [3x]
Was it planned as a one night stand Or did she live in disgrace Well, I never Will I ever See my father's face See my father's face
[Chorus 2x]
Gotta hold on... [4x]

4- One of my favroite tracks, but I wish the drums had some more beef, or at least raised in the mix.
Has a great McCartney hook.

3 from me. It is good.
I wish Paul would have written it in detached third person and based on what the horrible "mother" did to that poor baby, it should be called and sung, "Only Mama Blows!"

Indifferent identikit rocker from a mixed album from a great musician past his sell-by date.

At least she gave him birth and didn't have the baby sucked out of the uterus with vaccuum aspiration before birth. But it would have better in the third person.

I like that the singer is speaking of his own experience.

I like that the singer is speaking of his own experience. Ah but somewhere Mother Mary is blushing because Paul had no such start to life. But that is cool, some artistic liberty as Paul inserts himself into that position. Such is the spice of life. We should focus our wrath at vectis who coldly dismisses the song as "Rocker by the numbers" and then cannot refrain from a dig at older Paul. It is always the elderly who are toughest on their fellow eldsters!

Yeah, I like it and the album it's from. 4. The lyrics are inconsequential. Maybe I should have given it a 3?
I am hoping that Paul's next album is an entire set of rock numbers. A mixture of things like this, About You, Nod Your Head, House Of Wax, etc.; preferably with good lyrics. I don't suppose it will happen.

I like it , I'll give it a 3.0
Paul at his age is still best at pop numbers, the rockers don't quite hit the greatness mark.
I can't give it a 4.0 because it is abit of Wings re-tread and it is missing a great solo.

We should focus our wrath at vectis who coldly dismisses the song as "Rocker by the numbers" and then cannot refrain from a dig at older Paul. It is always the elderly who are toughest on their fellow eldsters! Focus away. I comment negatively out of sadness and disappointment, not malice. Sadness that my only remaining hope of getting more of the music which meant so much to me is by way of remixes and further extractions from the vaults, because Mr M just isn't going to do it any more.

I hear you vectis only in that Paul is really getting past his prime. However, one of the reasons I love ONLY MAMA KNOWS so much is that -- for me -- he DOES sound like he's making the music which meant so much to me! In this case, something like GET BACK, BACK IN THE USSR, JUNIOR'S FARM... even SO GLAD TO SEE YOU HERE! For me there is some of the old Macca on the MEMORY ALMOST FULL collection.

I give it a 3. Really like the rocking part. Very Beatlesque. But I knocked off a point because I can't stand the violins at the beginning. I feel like I'm sitting through some dreary, mauldin, overly-melodramatic movie.

I first thought this a little too by the book, formula Paul McCartney rock, but then, I can't remember if it was the Amoeba single I got or what, but I started getting into it.
I had to figure out the "though I always wondered, I never knew" lyrics so I could sing through it in my head. Even I can't find anything relevent in the lyrics. I usually can think of something "ah, this is about bla, bla, bla ..., he just doesn't want to say it".
I'll give it a 3.0.
