1 -- This is one of Paul's lousiest songs ever for me. The amateur lyrics are embarrassingly blush-worthy. Real "June/Moon/Spoon" nonsense.

Speaking of typically shite lyrics, here are the lyrics for Driving Rain..
12345 Let's go for a drive 678910 Let's go there and back again
Something's open it's my heart If something's missing it's when we're apart If something's good it's when we're back together again
Nothing's wrong it's just insane Nothing's right until you're back again Nothing's broken when it's softly spoken And we're walking slowly down the lane
Why don't we drive in the rain Straight to the eye of the hurricane Go for a ride in the driving rain
12345 Let's go for a drive 678910 Ooh Ooh 12345 Let's go for a drive 678910 Let's go there and back again Baby baby
You come walking through my door Like the one that I've been waiting for Letting sunshine in the darkest places when I've been going there again
So why don't we drive in the rain Straight to the eye of the hurricane
Why don't we drive in the rain Straight to the eye of the hurricane Go for a ride in the driving rain 12345 Let's go for a drive 678910 Ooh Ooh 12345 Let's go for a drive 678910 Let's go there and back again Baby baby
In the driving rain Why don't we drive In the driving rain
12345 Ooh Ooh 678910 Let's go back again 12345 Let's go for a drive 678910 Let's go there and back again
You come walking through my door Like the one that i've been waiting for

Typical Macca claptrap..
How could it rate any more than a 1

This is an easy 2. Catchy enough. Nothing offensive. I don't mind the lyrics. Each of the solo Beatles have written better (and a few worse). I strongly disagree with JoeK and fabfour calling this a 1 (just as I'd strongly disagree with anyone giving it a 4). If fabfour truly thinks a "typical" McCartney is a 1, I question how he can even consider himself a Beatles fan. There are more than a few Beatles songs that are no better than this.

4 Ropey old rubbish. Like most of the rest of the album. 4??? Did you mean to say 1??? Your comments suggest it is a 1. I don't think DRIVING RAIN (the album) is very good, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as some people are making it out to be.

2.
Flawlessly constructed pop-by-the-numbers with just enough Macca melodic touches to make it more than just run-of-the-mill. But it doesn't get me on any kind of emotional level. So it never adds up to anything more than catchy background music. Or in other words, a dime a dozen. Even Macca's vocals sounds like even he can't really get into this song, like he's struggling to sustain some kind of energy and interest en lieu of inspiration.

And I'm glad some people like it but, for me, it's exactly as bad as I'm making it out to be.

I liked Driving Rain alot more at the time it came out , not as much today but I still don't think it's as bad as people make out.
I like Driving Rain but prefer it live, live it's a 3.0, studio it's a 2.0
2.0

3.5. I love the optimism of this song. It is about a guy coming out of very bad times into better times.
I am the opposite though of ursamajor, I love the studio version but not the live versions. Like ursa, I liked this album a lot more when it first came out but it still inspires me.

When I listen to the live versions of Lonely Road and Driving Rain I find it hard to get back into the studio versions but Your Loving Flame is better on album than live.

Good for you if you disagree but this junk has nothing to do with The Beatles Well yes it does. You described "Driving Rain" as "typical McCartney claptrap". To me that means that a song which you rate as "terrible" is a "typical" Paul song. I would maintain that there are more than a few Beatles songs that are at the same level as a "typical" McCartney solo song (and the same with John and George) Are Do You Want To Know A Secret, Hold Me Tight, I Wanna Be Your Man, When I Get Home, You Like Me Too Much, What Goes On really any better than the typical or average song from any of the solo albums of Paul, John and George? (or pick your own choices for average Beatles songs) I guess I have less issue with you giving "Driving Rain" a rating of 1 (I only gave it a 2 after all) than with referring to it as a "typical" McCartney song. I would maintain that the "typical" McCartney song would be a 2-3 on this rating scale (same for John and George too) Typical Beatles songs would be better (3) so I do rate the Beatles better than the solo. But putting the rating of "1" on a typical song seems way too strong for me. A "1" is reserved for bad songs. "Typical" songs should get a "2".

You are entitled to your opinion but it has no relevance to the Beatles..It is not my fault that Paul has no standards in his solo career...he thinks everything he creates is awesome regardless of effort....i happen to disagree...

He doesn't have a crapometer and doesn't appear to have a sounding board so some shite gets through to us, the listener.... If a song deserves a 1 then that's what it will get....

I think this song(and the rest of the album) is best heard really loud and in a car. It is similar to The JSD Wings Wild Life Challenge!

So it is your opinion that an average Paul song from his solo career would rate a 1? [/quote] So basically you just aren't going to answer my question-instead you are just going to make snide remarks. Again, I consider the "typical" Paul, George and John song to be about a 2.5. Ringo I would say a weak 2 and the Beatles I would give a 3. I can accept you calling "Driving Rain" a 1. JoeK gave it a 1. This is not just about Paul. If you said a "typical" John or George song was a 1 I would be making similar comments. And if the song here were "Bip Bop" I would be giving it a 1 also. But I'd call it a poor McCartney song, not a "typical" one. When the songs are there to be rated i'll rate them as i see fit and if it's a Paul song that i believe he hasn't put much effort into then i'll deem it typical Paul and rate it accordingly. CoachBK, I appreciate your objectivity on this song(you gave it a 2) but as cynical as I am, I really find something refreshing and appealing to it! The counting lyrics bother me not a bit. Paul is giddy, he is seeing sunlight after a very rough patch. We have all been so giddy at some time that we spout off nonsense but it is fun, refreshing and optimistic(and it strikes some wrong who hear it, in my case invariably my wife).
The studio version has an enthusiasm I find so appealing even in its giddy, childlike wonder.
The song "Driving Rain" is very Postulate-worthy!

You could easily compare the lyrics to this to All Together Now. The only difference is, All Together Now was a childrens song, a nursery rhyme. This is mature love song that just plain falls short. With a little work, this could have been a better song. Without that work, this is below average.
1.5. I could go either way on the poll. I'm going to borrow some Ringo points and go with 2.0. If Ringo needs the points back, Paul will have to pay up later.

Didn't we go through this exercise with No. 32 last month? This is torture to go through the same criticisms again--most of it unwarranted.

Oy. You mean I already covered DRIVING RAIN back in #32? Sorry about that. I knew I was going to have to write the titles down or something to avoid accidental repeats. Well, it hasn't gotten any better after 36 more entries! ;D
