Bed time reading for JSD....... ;D How Lennon sabotaged his dishwasher dad's bid to be a pop star: Close friend tells story of the Beatle's hard-drinking fatherRead more: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2181327/How-John-Lennon-sabotaged-dishwasher-dads-bid-pop-star.htmlFreddie Lennon Single......*That's My Life*(the intro doe's sound a bit like *Imagine*........ ;D) This is the complete single that John Lennon's father, Freddie Lennon, issued in 1965 at the height of Beatlemania. The first track, That's My Life, is a response to In My Life. John was incredibly upset with Alf for doing this. Freddie Lennon was what he recorded under, but his family always knew him as Alf.

That is interesting material and I have always liked his song(the A-Side).
Freddie was not a bad guy at heart. There was family politics that kept him away from John and I think in those days the law favored children going with the mother or in John's case a head-strong aunt who could outspend Julia and Freddie(thanks to Uncle George, a true unsung hero in John's life) if it came to a court fight.
Whether Mimi's motives were good or bad, she was determined to keep John's parents away from him as much as she could, especially Freddie. Julia could at least see her son and we know that became more delicate and confusing as John got older and couldn't be restrained by Mimi from seeing his mother when he pleased.
I like Freddie for the most part and the best book by far to read about him is the Philip Norman book on John. Freddie is not portrayed as a hero but nor is he portrayed as a complete bum without any redeeming quality. John's was a very complicated upbringing.

I thought the Bob Spitz book also gave a more balanced account of the Freddie Lennon story. I too enjoy "That's My Life". I have it taped directly off the internet onto cassette from back in the days before YouTube. It has long been one of my favorite things to pull out for other Beatles fans to listen to when they are over for a visit.

I think he sounds and looks more like Joe Strummer. Hmmm . . . I wonder.

I think he sounds and looks more like Joe Strummer. Hmmm . . . I wonder. John would have loved that! I have read where he was embarrassed by his father's appearance but putting it like that, the 1977 John might have been, "Right on, cool sayne!" Freddie was really short. John got his relative height from his mother's side.

It was also interesting to read (in the recent Norman book) that John's great-grandfather was a singer who traveled to New York, etc., to perform -- just as John later did!
