A big *Happy Birthday* to Mr Atom Beat, 5th Beatle, the original drummer of The Beatles, who turns 71 today...... Love Me DoMoney Dream Me Home Gone Pete Best born Nov. 24th, 1941 is a musician principally known as the original drummer in The Beatles. The Beatles (at the time known as The Quarrymen) played some of their first concerts at the club owned by Best's mother. Best played there with the Beatles as well as his first band, The Black Jacks.
The Beatles invited Best to join on 12 August 1960, on the eve of the group's first Hamburg season of club dates. He was eventually replaced by Ringo Starr on 16 August 1962, when the group's manager, Brian Epstein, dismissed Best under the direction of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, following their first recording session at Abbey Road Studios. After working in a number of commercially unsuccessful groups Best gave up the music industry to work as a civil servant for twenty years, before starting The Pete Best Band. Best is sometimes referred to as the "Fifth Beatle".

I would suggest that Pete is more than a "5th Beatle." That's if the connotation "5th Beatle" means someone who contributed to the Fab Four (J,P,G, &R) in terms of as a producer, manager, or additional musician while the aforementioned foursome existed as a band. Pete would today simply be a "Former Beatle", like Stuart Sutcliffe. I guess he would technically have been the "5th Beatle" from the period of 1960-1962 when John, Paul, George, and Stuart initially invited him to be their drummer for the Hamburg gigs, until Stuart quit the band.

Thx for replying and explaining Lowbasso, to me 5th or 6th Beatle is someone who performed with the band eg Pete and Stuart......But to me George Martin, Epstein and others are not Beatles, their just managers producers etc....Just like teachers are teachers, and students are students..... I'm happy with Pete or Stuart being called former Beatles.....

Happy belated birthday Pete Best. I'd say Pete is the second "4th Beatle"(after Stu left) then replaced by Ringo who became the permanent "4th Beatle." Pete was indeed the first "Fifth Beatle" while Stu was there!

Thx for his Birthday wishes (no I'm not Peter or Roag... ;D), just surprised on this board how much dislike/hatred they have for the guy or they couldn't care less...? I love everyone in the Beatles family/circle, especially Jane Asher, tell ya I've being getting whoppa photo's on Facebook (ask Scousette) which you can't get on the internet......She would have to to be the best looking Beatle wife (gorgeous.. ), Paul did a big mistake, no wonder he's written more songs about her than all his wives put together.......

I still feel sorry for him for working so hard for them, and losing his hearing in both ears....Poor guy..... John wanted to re-record their whole catalogue...Struth (what was wong with him to even say that during that period...?)

Ringo ones! ;D Actually JSD, don't know if you remember him, my friend or work colleague Colin who occasionlly voted on my Survivor thread years ago Well he'd be Vectis's age, so a first generation ( obsessed) Beatle fan.....He's a crazy Lennon fan (more than yourself and JoeK... )...He's even gone out and bought John's 1967 granny glasses (gold plated expensive ones, he's a millionaire?) Anyway he dislikes Ringo (won't come to his concert here in 2013), he reckons Pete was a far better drummer, created the atom/beatle beat, and drummed longer for the Beatles in that 2yr period, than what Ringo did in 7yrs...... I never argue with him or comment, thats his opinon......

I take it Colin doesn't want to buy my original, first edition, Ringo vinyl albums from the mid-1970's to the mid-1980's? I wonder if there any fans who accept no Beatles drummer after Tommy Moore! Now that would be a bizarre fan!

Not sure if you were old enough to remember them but whilst the orginal fabs (Beatles) were going thru there mania, so were these fabs in the mid 60's, and they were knocking the Stones and Beatles of the charts....... ;D They did an interview with Ray Martin on 60 min last Sunday, and touring in May 2013, and tickets go on sale on the 10th Dec.... Am I missing out, no way, concert No.4 for me next year..... (A lot of the U.S people, refer them as our very own Peter, Paul, & Mary?) The Seekers - I'll Never find Another You

I did mention my post about him on this Message Board, he laughed......He spoke about Let It Be, and what other (solo songs eg Maybe I'm Amazed, ATMP, etc) that was to be included in the album had they not split.....Plus (In his opinion) there Solo output up until 1974 were there best, anything after that he refuses to listen to them....... (So much for buying your first edition, Ringo vinyl albums from the mid-1970's to the mid-1980's?....... ;D ;D ;D)
