I don't know what it's like Stateside, or elsewhere in the world, but English football is absolutely riven with local rivalries -- and much mutual loathing takes place between sets of supporters from different towns and cities. Sometimes it's quite hard keeping up with the sheer compelxity of all the criss-crossing inter-city hostility. In Liverpool we hate Manchester and particularly the dreaded Manchester United. Believe me, the feeling's mutual. Just to give you a flavour, United fans sing the following song about people from Liverpool to the tune of 'Clementine'... Build a bonfire, Build a bonfire, Put the Scousers on the top Put City in the middle And burn the f***ing lot.(City = Manchester City, Manchester's other footlball team.) Oxford hate Swindon, Norwich hate Ipswich, Portsmouth hate Southampton and so on, and so on. I just love the sheer mindless pettiness of it! ....so who do your lot hate then -- and why. Usually these things are geographical, but sometimes this mutual hostility has all sorts of historical anticedents. JCV, so I can complete my apprenticeship in supporting Pittsburgh, who do the Stillers hate?

I don't think rivalries exist in the NFL anymore, not like they did back in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The reason...free agency. Players today can play out their contract and move from team to team, going to the highest bidder. Back in the old days players were tied to the team that drafted them, unless they were traded. This created team loyalty and that, in turn, fueled rivalries. For example, Chicago Bear players like Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus and Walter Payton played their entire career with one team, the Bears. That wouldn't happen today. Anyway, to answer your question, great rivalries from the past...
Chicago Bears/Green Bay Packers. Not only division rivals but it was a boarder war between Illinois and Wisconsin. They had some great games back then and it was a blood rivalry.
Other NFL rivalries that come to mind...
Oakland Raiders/Pittsburgh Steelers...bad blood.
Oakland Raiders/Kansas City Chiefs...division rivals, bad blood.
Philadelphia Eagles/New York Giants...division rivals.
Dallas Cowboys/Washington Redskins...division rivals

JCV, so I can complete my apprenticeship in supporting Pittsburgh, who do the Stillers hate? Nice question, superhans! ;D Well, JMG is correct on the hatred of the Raiders. That really isn't true present-day, but back in the '60s and '70s it most certainly was. The Raiders were known as the dirtiest players in the league. The Stillers also had no love for the Cowboys or the Colts (who were originally from Baltimore) at that time. Present-day rivalries are still the Colts to an extent, just because they were the original Baltimore team. Also, the Ravens now, since they used to be the Cleveland Browns. And we always hate Cleveland no matter what sport! ;D And Cincinnati is close on their heels. The three teams that are in our division are our natural rivals, as I'm sure it is in other divisions. And that's your lesson for today, superhans. Hope you didn't stay up too late to watch the Stiller game last night as we shot ourselves in the foot - again. I'm on the hotline to them this afternoon to find out what the heck they were trying to do yesterday besides hand the game to the Colts on a silver platter. JCV

It's heart-warming to know that tribal loyalties run strong in the American game. Excellent! To answer your point about players moving between clubs - this happens a lot in England these days. Many players are simple mercenaries and contracts are hardly worth the paper they're written on. There's still an all-consuming fan loyalty to the club, regardless, though. Fans will always have particular fondness for the local lads in their team, but if you're good enough you get fan-worshipped and the inter-club hostility carries on regardless.

I shall look out for the Ravens results from now on and have a bloody good chuckle to myself when they lose. Y'see....I knew the rest of the world would be as grudge-ridden as old blighty!

Love this thread. With American football, one might just find what you are looking for in the college rivalries. Michigan/Ohio State, Auburn/Alabama, UCLA/USC, Harvard/Yale, Nebraska/Oklahoma, Texas/Oklahoma, and soooo many more will give you the colorful (and sometime violent) rivalries you are used to with British soccer.
Here are some jokes that I've heard from the UCLA(my school) and USC rivalry. I'm sure many of them are and have been used by other schools, too, in their rivalries:
1. What is the difference between a USC fan and a lobster? One is a bottom-feeding, scum sucker, and the other is a shellfish.
2. Why don't USC fans let their kids play in sandboxes? Because cats keep covering them up.
3. A USC fan walks into a doctor's office and removes his hat to reveal a frog sitting on his head. The doctor asks, "How can I help you?" The frog replies, "I was wondering if you could help me get this wart off my ass."
4. Why do USC students put their report card on their car's window? So they can use the handicap space.
5. What do a USC football player and a bottle of beer have in common? They're both empty from the neck up.
There are lots more, but this gives you a taste.

Back to the pros, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders is a big rivalry which dates back to 1961. When the Raiders moved to Los Angeles in the 80s (?) we wore t-shirts that said, "Oakland STILL sucks!" A MAJOR rule change occurred as a result of one of their games against each other. Real ugly gorilla-type Raider fans go down to San Diego for games to cause problems - and those are just the women Fights often occur. Here's a sad example of the violence that has become an all too frequent occurence at American sporting events: Also, here's an article about violence in sports: www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20041031/news_7m31safe.html

My sister, who lives near Philly, says her favorite NFL teams are the Eagles.....and whoever's playing the Cowboys. ;D At the risk of getting OT, pro ice hockey is also infamous for violence. Rodney Dangerfield had a famous joke: "I went to a fight last night, and a hockey game broke out!" ;D

Bears/Packers?
I'm the youngest of five, three sisters and one brother. Everyone in my family born in Wisconsin, except for me, born in Illinois. My Dad a Packer fan. My Mom, nine year older brother and myself rabid Chicago Bear fans. Most of my Aunts, Uncles and Cousins up in Wisconsin were/are Packer fans. Needless to say, more than one family gathering turned into a fist fight with more than one of us going home with a bloody nose or blackened eye. True story.
Ya gotta love the NFL! ;D

...a quick link to those horrible Manchester United fans singing their dreary little song about us Liverpool folk... uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JA7m5CWMykEA reminder of the lyrics - Build a bonfire, Build a bonfire, Put the Scousers on the top, Put [Manchester] City in the middle And we'll burn the f***ing lot. There is a Liverpool retort, but I can't find it on youtube, unfortunately and it's incredibly rude -- probably too rude to print here, alas. SuperHans.

Plus the fact that teams don't play each others as much as they did back in *da good ol'days*. With 32 teams and only 16 games by season...

That should at least count for SOME Colts respect from Stillers fans. (And, to be fair, vice-versa!)

Good call ChuckE Tony Dungy played defensive back with the Pittsburgh Steelers, 1977 and 1978 and then with the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. Kind of surprising as I would have thought Dungy's NFL playing career was longer than just three seasons.

Okay, sayne...next up for the Super Stillers are your Chargers. Cheaters! Couldn't you guys have put the temperature in the 60s and stopped the snow flurries? Geez, if you guys had played in San Diego, we would have made it 85 and sunny for you. Great interception by Malemaleuna! (or however you spell it)

Green Bay Packers 37 Chicago Bears 3 Here in Chicagoland, Bear fans are up in arms and ready to storm the gates at Halas Hall (I'm one of the leaders. We have torches, rocks, sticks 'n stuff. Typical mob scene you used to see in those old movies. We even have a rail. ) and are ready to run Bears head coach Lovie Smith out of Chicago on a rail. What a totally embarrassing performance.

However, that only happens around here perhaps 30 days out of the whole year! I saw the very end of the game, sayne. What an ending! I wish they would just outright win already and quit foolin' around like this! Gosh! All those penalties we got this game...something sounds fishy to me. We've got a quick turnaround this week, playing Thursday night against the Bungles. We best win that one and not fool around n'at. JCV
