I've been listening to the first Traveling Wilbury's album quite a bit lately. It is such a fun album! Great songs with outstanding playing, writing and singing! "Handle With Care" was one of the best singles of that time (and "End Of The Line" was almost as good. "Last Nite" is a great catchy track. I love when Roy Orbison comes in! "Tweeter And The Monkey Man" and "Dirty World" are two of my favorite Dylan songs. I don't mind his voice at all.
"Heading For The Light" and "Not Alone Anymore" are also pretty good.
Except for "Wilbury Twist" and "Inside Out" VOLUME 3 couldn't match any of these songs, but it is still an OK album.
But the first one was great and George gets a lot of credit for that!!!

Almost totally agree, coachbk. Vol 1 is an outstanding album, and is that huge rarity in rock: at no stage does the album sag. The standard of songwriting, playing and singing is very high, and listener interest (at least this listener) is maintained throughout. Superb.
In Vol 3, the standard is not quite as high: though I think it's a fine album. For me, She's My Baby, Wilbury Twist, Cool Dry Place, Where Were You Last Night are highlights. I've often wondered why they didn't include Maxine on Vol 3, and Like A Ship for that matter. They would have broken up a feeling of sameness and lack-of-variety that hurts the album's flow.
Coachbk, have you heard the special 12-inch vinyl album in the Wilburys collection box set? That's a great listen too ...
Side 1 1. Handle With Care (Extended Version) 2. Like A Ship 3. Maxine
Side 2 1. End Of The Line (Extended Version) 2. Nobody's Child 3. Not Alone Anymore (Remix: diff vers to that on Vol 1) 4. Runaway (Remix: diff version to that on the She's My Baby single)

Yep I agree with that, the first Wilbury album is a classic from start to finish.
I only like 4 songs on Vol.3
She's My Baby Inside Out New Blue Moon Wilbury Twist
the rest I find very boring and not up to standard compared to Vol.1, not enough George on Vol.3

McCabe, I have heard a couple of those tracks on YouTube. Good stuff.
Ursa,
Agree completely not enough George on Vol 3. I would add too much Dylan too.

I like both Wilburys albums a lot, but I think I actually prefer more songs off Vol. 3 ! The only thing I miss about the second album is that George should have had a lead vocal song. I enjoy the following songs:
Vol. 1 Handle With Care Last Night Congratulations Heading For The Light Tweeter and the Monkey Man End of the Line
Vol. 3 She's My Baby Inside Out If You Belonged To Me The Devil's Been Busy 7 Deadly Sins New Blue Moon Wilbury Twist
Looking over these lists again it strikes me that the songs on VOL. 3 feel more fun somehow. I do like Roy Orbison's own solo music, so I may have to give his VOL. 1 contributions closer inspection.

The beauty of the Travelin Wilburies was that egos were left at the door.
These were well crafted tunes.
No other superstar group could have pulled this off without sounding pretentious or overproduced.
Remember the Masked Marauders, who were supposed to be Lennon, McCartney, Jagger, Richard and Dylan? Well that was fiction, but this certainly was the real deal and it delivered.

Funny that I made the exact opposite comment to my wife the other day! Except for "Wilbury Twist", I find Volume 1 to be way more fun

I've not really heard these albums, bar a few tracks. My Dad had them when I was a kid, and I might have overheard them a few times, but not with much attention.
"Handle with Care" is good, but kind of repetitive and goes on rather too long. I much prefer "End of the Line", which is a perfect track. Just wonderful!

Man do I feel old when a poster says he basically only remembers his dad playing Wilbury albums! I lived with that first one for several months upon release. I was so excited at the huge success! The guys were on the morning talk shows, there were toy Wilbury guitars that were popular, the whole thing took off!
I like Volume III but there is no doubt but that Roy's death took a lot of the joy out. It is still a good album as far as I am concerned.

I remember Wilburymania well, the Wilbury cartoon show, the Wilbury lunch box, Pillsbury Wilbury biscuits, the SNL/Monty Python joint spoof, "The Wandering Dingleberries", and the inspired TV Show "The Doonsburees."

I swear they used the same actor's voice for Dylan and Petty on the cartoon and it was nasally!
