Here's an article which reinforces what I have brought up several times in other threads:
new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/20401/chart-watch-extra-what-a-turkey-the-25-worst-selling-1-albums
In comparison with the Beatles, when people evoke the names of Madonna and Mariah Carey and cite the number of Number 1's they have had, it is meaningless. Being popular or influential or important has little to do with having a number 1 record.

These days, all you need is a hardcore of fans that rush out and buy every release and you can notch up a string of no. 1s. Most worrying are Irish ninnies-on-stools, Westlife. They are in danger of overhauling the Beatles' tally of 17 UK no. 1 singles (they currently stand on 14) with their cloying brand of mawkish, crooning, sentimental old crap. As you say, their absolute record sales are relatively low, but to many their contribution to music is almost on a par with the Beatles, based on their record of no 1s.
