I finally finished the Phillip Norman biography of John Lennon this weekend. I liked it more than Shout, which I thought gave John too much of the credit (saying he was 70% of the Beatles). I think that Shout came out too much on the heels of John's death to be objective. I found it fairly ironic that a biography of Lennon was more positive toward Paul McCartney than a book on the Beatles had been. I will admit I shed tears as I got to the final pages. The lines from Double Fantasy often do that to me. "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" is one of my favorites of all John's lyrics. I really liked that Norman didn't dwell on the whole shooting and finished up with a nice interview with Sean. What do others think?

I have a stack of stuff to read, including RECORDING THE BEATLES, and haven't added to it. I was glad to see you had a positive reaction, though. JcS

Understandably, Paul has a real ax to grind with Norman. Over the years, Norman has been not merely critical but at times overtly nasty toward Paul and the women in his life. I think some things Norman said about Linda really sent him over the edge.
When Norman approached Paul for his cooperation on this project, Paul initially refused to meet with him. Norman persisted, saying that he wanted to get it right, and there were "things that only Paul would know." At that point Paul agreed to communicate with him by e-mail. I think it shows how much Paul still cares about John, and the Beatles legacy.
I give him a lot of credit for taking one for the team. And I sense that Norman does, too, which may be why he is kinder to Paul here than he has been in the past.
