REVIEW: Channel 9 Master’s Master NTSC (Misterclaudel) - MCDVD-016
By Beatle Bob
A new addition to Misterclaudel’s line of recent DVD releases is the unedited "CHANNEL 9 MASTER" of the Festival Hall Show in Australia from June 17, 1964. Likely taken from the available version on the internet that was pulled shortly after it’s availability, this DVD is the first appearance from a factory pressed bootleg label to surface . For for non-dowloaders like myself, this release is a godsend. Taken from the PAL version and “transcoded” to NTSC, this release gives us the absolute best version anyone in NTSC-land will ever have of this show . From what I hear, folks who have the PAL version tell me this NTSC transfer version is nearly identical. So that’s good news knowing almost no loss if at all in the transfer. In comparison to the earlier version released by Misterclaudel, “THE BIGGEST ATTRACTION IN THE WHOLE WORLD”, this is a major step up visually. It can’t get any better now that we have the video master in circulation. Also, in comparing the You Can’t Do That clip on “ANTHOLOGY”, this release is almost identical. The only difference being Apple did some digital washing and smoothing of the image to erase a small glitch or two-- and that digital work is noticeable in a slightly negative way in my opinion. This bootleg release is the unadulterated video master as existing in its archives in Australia.
This DVD also offers up Sounds Incorporated, Johnny Devlin and Johnny Chester. These bits I only skimmed thru but also look excellent.
This DVD is offered up in a Amaray type DVD case complete with an insert for their Beatles catalog. The menu plays with the “Messages to Australia” outtakes and the DVD offers (at the end) an “extra stereo version/w radio mix” of the video that is well done, though I prefer the original mono mix off the video as the stereo mix takes away a certain urgency about the recordings. The original mono audio on the master is still one of the best mono recordings from the peek of Beatlemania.
This is one upgrade that is not only highly recommended but necessary in your Beatles DVD collection. It's very exciting to own.
