There is a barely there story about George being offered an OBE in 2000 and that he turned it down. The story suggests he was insulted that it was less than the knighthood Paul received. I would think it may have been from a lack of interest on his part given the state of his health in late 2000. As I recall, I think he had surgery at the Mayo Clinic at the end of 2000. His only promotional appearance for the ATMP re-release was the webchat he did for MSN and Yahoo in early 2001.
George's attitude toward Paul's knighthood seemed to be bemusement, not quite as hostile as Keith was to Mick's.

I have never heard about George being offered the OBE but in the film Living In The Material World, Olivia talks about how George really didn't care about awards and if Olivia tried to encourage George to accept a particular award, George would tell her to go ahead and accept it if it was so important! Kind of a refreshing difference from Paul. If George turned down the OBE then three cheers for him. Rock Stars have no business accepting Knighthoods or Presidential awards, those are all bullshit by the ruling elite to pacify and defang the Rockers. What a disgrace that Paul, Mick Jagger, and those others are knighted and even Bob Dylan accepted what, The Medal of Freedom, from the POTUS which is just another Establishment ploy. The Medal of Freedom sounds like something the Wizard of Oz would give the Wicked Witch's former soldiers to prove they were now free. If George turned the OBE down then he is an even bigger hero to me. Any Rocker with a "Sir" is a disgrace. Did they also play Sun City?

What did George call the MBE medal, bits of leather and wooden string?

I can't talk about the US, but the UK honours system is a great idea - civil recognition for those who merit great public honour - which is mostly administered appallingly badly. I would argue that Paul's knighthood is merited, not just for his musical achievements but also for his charitable work (LIPA etc.), and Jagger's not so much. And as for the honours bestowed so readily on sports personalities - feh.

George certainly deserved it on the charity front.

George certainly deserved it on the charity front. Totally agree, Mark! I have always said that The Concert For Bangladesh alone should have gotten George a quick ticket to the RRHF as a solo artist and during his lifetime! Man, that angers me that he got that award when it was too late for him to enjoy it or, more likely, not enjoy it!
