Those 28 years seem an eternity. My actual memories of a live John Lennon seem almost a dream from a long forgotten time and place.
I was just a very young man back then, barely 18, and now at 46 I can't say that I am any less haunted by those events of Dec. 8, 1980. It is a nightmare that keeps coming back and staining any and all happy Beatles' memories and happy new news that we get from time to time. It hangs over our collective love of The Beatles' music as a dark cloud.
George's death was no less sad but it was at least not so shocking as we could sadly follow media reports on George's demise. The earlier attack on George and Olivia though raised exactly those same gut-wrenching feelings as 12/08/80, so again it was hovering right over us.
It is really the love and the upbeat vibes of the music though that lets us overcome the negativity and horror of that event from completely ruining the joy of Beatles' music .
R.I.P. John (and George).

I still remember the excitement of John coming out of retirement-then...he was just ...gone from this place.
It really does seem like a weird, haunting dream.
