Hey folks, For those of you who aren't familiar with the Steve Hoffman Music forums ... you should be! You'll find some of the most educated (and polite) discussions about music - in general - as well as music - about the Fabs - there. Anyway, earlier today I posted an insanely detailed poll about how many Fab-albums you own on that site. If you're not a member already, join up and cast a vote - beware, though, some of you will have to express more tolerance (a good thing - IMO) of others' opinions if you wish to remain there(!) Anyway, here's the poll www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=168589, which asks how many group/solo discs you own, with choices ranging from - zero: I genuinely dislike the Beatles and their solo works
to - a few (<5) "key" group albums (Revolver, Pepper, Abbey Rd), but not ALL the 60s studio albums
to - most 60s releases and most post-1970 group discs, plus several (6-10) "key" solo albums (ATMP, Imagine, Band on The Run, etc.)
to - all the above [group/solo/live/compilations], and ALL "fringe" stuff (+ Twin Freaks, Thrillington, Scouse the Mouse)
to - all group, all solo, all "fringe", all live, all compilations, all b-sides - everything!
to - EVERYTHING (incl. non-Fab Apple, Dark Horse & Ring'O discs), plus all known guest appearances as session musicians and/or producer
and many choices in-between. Believe it or no, five out of about 150 people have already selected the final choice - that should tell you that this site is a great "supplement" to this one for Fabfans!

I think it would be interesting for people to post which category they belong to on this thread, just so that we can monitor (and carp at) each other's level of fanaticism... I think I would fall in category 3 from the above list -- I've got most of the Beatle stuff plus a smattering of solo albums. Anyone else want to fess up...?

There are tons of awful Beatle tributes. One of the discs I still treasure, though, is by cellist Ofra Harnoy. Her version of "Imagine" is wonderful. She also covered "Free As a Bird" right after the Anthology came out (I think she was the first) and it's really beautiful.

She also covered "Free As a Bird" right after the Anthology came out (I think she was the first) and it's really beautiful. Steve, I bought that album solely on your recommendation from Abbeyrd's Beatle Page News Site. That was back even before your first Message Board here(replaced by this one). It is a great album! It proves that "Free As A Bird" wasn't some throwaway bit but had a haunting melody if fully explored. On the scale here, I don't see one that fits me. I have all the official Beatles' British albums and singles on c.d.(had all the U.S. releases on record in the old days), all the subsequent comps and official Apple releases up to both versions of LOVE, those recent Capitol Beatles boxsets, all the "mainstream" solo albums on commercial c.d.(and on vinyl until I switched to c.d. in 1988) but not all of John and Yoko's Unfinished Music series, George's Wonderwall, Paul's "Family Way" soundtrack and I don't have every available solo B-side on commercial release but I may come close on boots. Macca has a billion of these things from just the 80's on! I am missing some of Ringo Starr and The All-Starrs' live albums but have the "Anthology" set of live tracks and a bunch of others including the Sound Stage c.d. as I was at that show. I have a bunch of "fringe" stuff but certainly not all: no releases from Dark Horse or Ringo's defunct label, no "McGear" or "Thrillington." The categories listed by mrjinks go right from a rather moderate level to extreme hardcore with the word "all" being used. I am in-between somewhere but by any account would be hardcore to most objective standards.. ;D And some of my omissions are completely by choice so maybe my fanaticism level is penalized for freely and proudly refusing to buy some things like some of the fringe items, some of Ringo's live albums or the super-dooper, pooper-scooper Ringo Rama(when I already bought the deluxe, limited edition version. Cool thread though and I do read the Hoffman forums from time to time but have never registered there.

Thanks for the fun poll. I logged in and posted. I'm down there at the bottom (EVERYTHING) because of my fascination with guest appearances and collections of Splinter, Ravi, etc. Too much stuff, really.

I am in-between somewhere but by any account would be hardcore to most objective standards.. ;D I think you're in this category, fwiw: all the above, and some "fringe" stuff (+ Zapple, Liverpool Sound Collage, Mc-Classical albums)"all the above" refers to all the group stuff - which you've got; all the solo studio albums - which it sounds like you've got; "most" live discs and compilations - which you've got; and "some" of the "fringe" stuff (which for me ranges from early pre-break up John & George, to Paul's classical & pseudonym projects, to Scouse the Mouse and so on). It's kind of why I did that poll. I've met "hard core" Beatle fans that only have the 60s releases and no solo stuff. Others claim to love the solo stuff, but all they have is Legend & Wingspan. Others will have everything, but draw the line at Paul's classical stuff, or whatever. So I was curious just how detailed one could be at defining levels of our disease. Tough to do in a poll with limited number of choices - I used the max of 25 (and even left four levels for folks who don't have Beatles music), and a limited number of characters for each poll option... fwiw, I fall in the camp of: everything, except the odd (1-5) hard-to-find cut (PM - Mean Woman Blues; GH - Mo)

What is this, a freakin' pissing contest? Oh, so someone with only one Beatle album is less a fan than someone with EVERYTHING? You, know, some people are not as fortunate as others to have the discretionary income that others do. Hey, let's change the parameters. How about live concerts? That's more of a commitment and a singular expense than a little album or single. About divorces? Anyone get one because of their Beatlemania? We could go and on.

I kind of view "fanaticism" as an unhealthy thing. I fall into the moderately to seriously disturbed category. I see your point though, sayne. It might be a socio-economical thing as to who has what and how much of it. Or, just that one doesn't have a life and spends all of his or her dough on Beatles and Beatles' related music. I didn't take mrjinks' Thread here to be competitive or an attempt to quantify our Beatles' fanship. I took it to be a fun exercise on determining how messed up we all are. After thinking about my own collection, I did get kind of depressed though as to how messed up I really am and I don't even come close to having everything.

There isn't really a category that completely fits me in your list mrjinks. I might fall at around 3.5. I've got nearly all the group/live/solo/compilations, with a few omissions. There are a handfull of solo cd singles I don't have, for example. I collect only cd's and dvd's seriously. I have no vinyl or video tapes, sold it all off years ago. Some of Paul's DVD releases have not been released in Australia yet, things like "Broadstreet," "Ecce Cor Meum" and "The World Tonight," so I don't have these yet either but I think I have all the rest. I have a lot of the fringe stuff, but once again, not all. I have not bothered about getting "Twin Freaks" or the recent Amoeba release, as they are only available on vinyl. If they get a cd release I will snap them up. Apart from this, I have a small collection of Beatles related books, but nothing else in the areas of collectables (this sort of stuff just does not interest me) or things like posters, artwork etc.

Did you follow the link to the actual poll, or just look at the abbreviated list here? I have 25 levels of fanatacism posted on the Hoffman forum (as referenced in the original link). There's obviously quite a bit of differentiation there - I was only trying to pique folks' interest by posting a few of the choices here...

About divorces? Anyone get one because of their Beatlemania?Bah! My *significant other* doesn't care that much about music... In all the years we've been together, she has bought the grand total of ONE cd and it was not the one she wanted in the first place, she got the wrong band ... In nearly 25 years, she has only asked for - and got - music from Jack Johnson first album and two francophone artists... Good thing is... There's no fighting in our home to see who gets to control the CD player...

I would say I'm with the other poster who said he was about a 3.5 on that scale. I have every Beatles properly released song on either album, tape, or CD. I got all the American albums (plus the UK REVOLVER) and now have all the CD's in the UK versions (plus US MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR) and all three Anthologies. I have several bootlegs on tape as well. I have all of Paul's solo rock stuff, but only one Fireman CD and none of the classical stuff. I have all of John's except TWO VIRGINS and LIFE WITH THE LIONS. For George I don't have WONDERWALL, ELECTRONIC SOUND, DARK HORSE, or EXTRA TEXTURE. Ringo I only have RINGO, GOODNIGHT VIENNA, ROTOGRAVURE, BLAST FROM YOUR PAST, VH-1 STORYTELLERS, and RING-0-RAMA. I have 3 Yoko LP's, MCGEAR,and two Julian Lennons. I have two Rutles CD's, Utopia's DEFACE THE MUSIC, and some various other stuff on a tape collection (Carefrees "We Love You Beatles", Freddie Lennon's "That's My Life"). So maybe I'm more like a 3.7?
