Those are three fantastic articles, thanks fabfour! I travelled for Easter so I got the chance to listen to both discs of Working Class Hero: The Definitive Lennon and what a fantastic listening experience. It is a nice compilation with some interesting sequencing. "God" followed by "Scared" works extremely well while the harrowing "Cold Turkey" going right into the up-tempo, happy sounding "Intuition" is rather jarring. Still, a fabulous collection with really good sonics! In the past year or so I have really come back to JL's solo career with a passion. I must set aside the pain of John's murder and I also must ignore the conflicting efforts to canonize solo John(the Yoko Camp) or marginalize solo John( The Macca Mad Hatters with implicit approval from the top) and just listen to it as very good, passionate Rock and Roll/Pop music. One can't drive down the highway on a sunny, warm Spring day and not sing along loud to "Instant Karma!(We All Shine On)." It was a great roadtrip thanks to John Lennon.

I can't really enjoy any Lennon 'hits' compilations. They just don't work. His best recording session -- the 1970 Plastic Ono Band stuff -- just doesn't work in any way, shape, or form on compilations. The 'Sometime in New York City' stuff seems beamed in from another planet, and then suddenly the 1973/74 recordings sound very '70s'. Then, the 1980 tracks are very lightweight and 80s.
One could probably merge the best of 'Imagine' and 'Sometime in New York City', and also merge 'Mind Games' and 'Walls & Bridges', but otherwise his songs only work in the context of the original albums.

I can't agree with you, though I sort of understand what you're saying with regard to Lennon. But the thing is, if you take any artist who's had a varied career and different periods, and then place some of his hits on a "compilations" album, you'll often get the same thing. Take Elvis: You go from "That's All Right Mama" to "Hound Dog" to "Viva Las Vegas" to "In The Ghetto", to "Crying In The Chapel", to "Kentucky Rain", to "Burning Love", and "Suspicious Minds". I always felt that "Mother" and "Love" (off POB) work fine as part of a "hits" collection for John. Though if you think of it, all the Lennon comps have titles that are nothing to do with the word "Hits"... they've got titles like SHAVED FISH, THE JOHN LENNON COLLECTION, and LENNON LEGEND. I guess your comment really made me appreciate that even though John was here only a short time as a solo artist, he DID, in fact, go through a lot of changes.

I can't believe this was John's favourite guitar during the Double Fantasy sessions, it looks like something he knocked up in the garage during the househusband years...

I wish the film footage of these sessions would show up. Not enough latter John footage out there in the collectors' circles.

John came across on video as weak and frail just from his thin-ness, and had all the footage destroyed. But yes, it (Double Fantasy sessions)was captured on video similar to the Imagine sessions.

John came across on video as weak and frail just from his thin-ness, and had all the footage destroyed. So we've heard, even Jack Douglas weighed in on the story that John himself didn't like his appearance in the footage. Still, who knows if something's out there which has survived, or someone had a backup copy. I can't believe there's nothing, so fingers are crossed. There is at least one audio tape taken from the video, which has made its way onto bootlegs. (I just re-read Jack Douglas' comments and he says the audio track was taken from his mike).

Fair enough but John loved the concept of "singles" so I always thought that Shaved Fish was awesome except for the editing of GPAC and Happy Xmas. I agree POB needs to be heard as a whole to best appreciate it but on the comp I mentioned, I thought "Love," "God," "Mother" and "Isolation" more than held their ground with more polished songs. I am with JoeK on the strong desire for film of John recording DF! That would have gone a long way in not making John seem such an ancient memory.

Is there more than one days worth of footage Mike? I thought setups were filmed on one or two days of the songs that may be chosen as singles (or something like that). There's the footage of an interview conducted in bad light with Empire Strikes Back sound FX in the background filmed by Seaman(?) or the photographer "whatshisname". Did John and Yoko have Seaman film everything on their own camera?

Bob Gruen... and I've always thought that in studio footage was shot by him. Though the discussion is difficult to discern at times, it is revealing and has John speaking of Paul as his brother.

I just remember reading that everything was filmed or tapped like they did for Imagine sessions, but John hated himself on video and wanted it destroyed. Watching John singing his last songs could have been a great find if it still existed. Even video footage of him talking during this period is rare. Most of the LP promo interviews are audio only.

Would be nice if there was video. Whatever it is.
I read there was a couple of video tapes worth but the one containing John was scrapped by John and the other video, containing only Yoko singing her single, wasn't scrapped and has been used by Yoko since. Something about a bathtub I recall.

Has anyone noticed the John Lennon Bermuda tapes app? I don't remember seeing anything about before. Kind of cool, but too much talking over the demos.
