Someone on Greg's Beatle's Photo Blog quoted Lennon's "Not even the best drummer in the Beatles" line. I took him to task.
I hope Joe(?) was right about it not being a real quote.

Even if John had ever uttered those words - so what. John said a lot of things that shot out of his mind that he later changed his perception of. John very much responded in the moment.
John has also praised the heck out of Ringo. Also, who did he get to play drums on his debut album after being "free" from the Beatles? Ringo...That shows John's real view on Ringo's talent.
Paul is a fine drummer. Pete best was a nice drummer. Ringo has them both "beat" (pun intended)

There is absolutely no origin for this oft-stated "John quote", and certainly no audio. I don't think Lennon ever said that.
Much like myself. Probably why I relate to him so well.

I don't think many people believe John would say it as anything other than a joke. Had he been serious, it would have been a praise for Paul, which at the time that Paul was doing most of his Beatle drumming, during the White Album, John would not likely had been inclined to do.
What's more interesting at this point, is how it keeps getting repeated as fact when there is apparently no source for it.

I believe Mark Lewisohn debunked this myth a year or two ago. He talks about it in some online interviews I can't be arsed to find right now. But basically the quote originated from a media person in the early 80s, and has been repeated as a John Lennon quote ever since.
