I know this is a routine question, but I thought it might be interesting to read about what non-Beatles related music releases board members have been buying recently. I don't buy as much as I once did, nevertheless I did pick up these over the past six months (a lot of them are old releases I previously hadn't acquired):
Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings Nico - Chelsea Girl 2015 Grammy Nominees (I buy this every year) Sade - The Ultimate Collection Jimi Hendrix - Live At Woodstock Max Merritt & The Meteors - 23 Trax Of Max David Crosby - Croz The Rolling Stones - Hampton Coliseum David Bowie - Nothing Has Changed Bob Dylan - The Basement Tapes Raw And The Band Played On - Music From The First World War Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls - Gossip Massive Attack - Blue Lines Radiohead - The Bends The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole Isaac Hayes - Shaft Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties

Ryan Adams - No Shadow I don't recall anything I've heard by Ryan. I'm sure I seen hi on Letterman or SNL.
Robert Plant & the Sensational Shapeshifters - Lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar I should have this one already. I've bought all the solo albums and the Strange Sensations and Band of Joy albums. I skipped the Allison Krauss album.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers- Hypnotic Eye Same here. I've been satisfied with Tom's best of, up to now. I've just started to go deeper.
Lindsey Buckingham - One Man Show I have yet to buy any solo Mac, including Stevie. I'm assuming this is live. Lindsey is amazing on guitar or mandolin. One thing that strikes me already is how little I am overlapping with the postings so far. You obviously still buy a lot of music. I intentionally didn’t list any Beatles related stuff. Grammy Nominees – I got into a routine of buying this each year. They usually contain a lot of material I wouldn’t otherwise consider. However, I often find something or other I like. It also keeps me abreast of what is happening in general in the world of contemporary popular music. The early editions from the 1990s tended to be on the short side, but the later ones at least offer value for money in terms of disc length. Nothing Has Changed – There is nothing really wrong with the track list and it is career spanning. Strangely though, the songs are in reverse chronological order. I don’t particularly appreciate this. Moreover, I have the three disc version and it features some of the worst packaging, as in being awkward to handle, I have come across. Secret Treaties - I haven’t got around to playing some of the albums, this is one.

The Decemberists - Ha! I only ever buy music magazines when they feature an artist I'm very attached to nowadays, but that wouldn't surprise me. They've been around long enough, and are generally very good. Hozier - CREED!? Take that back. Having the word 'church' in the title of his most well-known song doesn't mean the man's making religious music. Check out the lyrics and the meaning behind 'Take Me To Church'... McCartney - Yep. I always get the archive books, though it's ridiculously overpriced for me to get them over here, even by buying them online. I didn't get the Wings Over America one, but haven't been able to resist the others. I'm a sucker for a good book and well-presented set. Better bonus tracks than previous re-issues too, actually. Pink Floyd - It is a little 'easy listening', but I enjoy that kind of thing. A bit unfocused but meanders rather smoothly, and is nice as background music more than anything else. Ryan Adams - Oh, really? Check him out. He has some fabulous stuff. I believe I first heard his music on a TV show back in the mid-00s. Maybe 'Desire'? On House MD? I think that was it. Robert Plant - Definitely get it. It's rather good. I think I prefer the most recent Band of Joy one a little more, but that may just be because of familiarity. I haven't listened enough to the new one yet. Raising Sand is what got me into Plant's solo work, because I already loved some of Alison Krauss's stuff, actually. Tom Petty - I was very happy with the new record; better than the last, I thought. Very classic sounding, in a good way. Lindsey Buckingham - I already have every Mac, Buckingham and Nicks albums. This one was the only one I hadn't gotten so I finally took the plunge and got it on iTunes. Some of the songs could have been done better, in taking advantage of the idea for the tour, but it had some special moments - I'm still THRILLED he did the Buckingham Nicks instrumental 'Stephanie'. Gorgeous piece. It's a live memento of his 2012 tour, yes. He doesn't really play mandolin but he's a monster on guitar, acoustic or electric. Would highly recommend his solo work, especially Out of the Cradle (1992) or his three most solo albums (Under The Skin, Gift of Screws and Seeds We Sow). Some tracks worked better live for me, but overall, all of them are fantastic listens. As for Nicks, you can't go wrong with Bella Donna (1981) or The Wild Heart (1983) if you want a taste of her. If you can cope with her older voice, 2001's Trouble In Shangri-La I also have a great fondness for. Lindsey doesn't have a best of but Stevie has two - 'Timespace' and 'Crystal Visions'. Both are good, though I prefer the latter for various reasons. Ahem, anyway.... Oh, all different places, really. For example, I first heard Joshua Radin and Damien Rice through TV shows. I heard a song, looked up the artist, bought albums. Glen Hansard I found through a film (Once). Tim Christensen I found through a tribute concert he participated in honouring Paul McCartney. Some of them I hear about through listening to BBC Radio or keeping an eye out for end of year 'best of' lists (Chet Faker, Jessie Ware, James Bay). Some friends have recommended to me (Brandy Clark, Lori McKenna, MSMR). Mostly, however, I hear about bands through Spotify and iTunes. I look at playlists with the type of music I like - often folky, melancholy, alt-country, acoustic, singer-songwriter, indie, etc. Then I write down particular tracks I liked, listen to the full album on Spotify and, if I like it, I'll buy it. Occasionally, I'll also check out what's new for certain genres on iTunes and get recommendations that way. I never buy before trying, even if that 'try' is just a 30 second sample on iTunes. Sometimes I will download a whole album illegally to try it out first. I usually then buy it if I like it, especially if's a lesser known independent artist.

Say Nicole, you might be able to tell me this. Do you know the name of the song that was used as background music for many of the AFL football broadcasts and associated shows in 2014? It features prominent use of horns and a male singer. I don't know if it was by a band or solo artist. It was a fairly recent hit, maybe around 18 months ago. I like it and want to buy it, whoever it was by.

If I had a recording or something, I'd have a look through and give identifying it a shot but my family prefer League and soccer so no luck there, sorry!

That clip's easily found on YouTube, lol... It's been enjoyable getting to see his promotional stuff for this album because I was late to the party when it came to his first one, not discovering it until 2012. From last year: End of the Affair Conrad In Dreams I even remember the first song of his I heard, actually. The Fear Swiftly followed by Promise

Non-Beatles or non-Solo Beatles I have purchased in the past two years or so:
The Civil Wars: Barton Hollow The Decemberists: The King Is Dead Jack Johnson: To The Sea Lana Del Rey Born To Die The Wallflowers: Glad All Over Mumford & Sons: Sigh No More and Babel The Lumineers: The Lumineers The Head And The Heart: Let's Be Still Of Monsters And Men: My Head Is An Animal The Avett Brothers: The Carpenter and Magpie And The Dandelion
My own biggest musical discovery since my 1975 discovery of The Beatles was my 2010 discovery of The Avett Brothers. Since then I have purchased all I could find of theirs including their older albums only available on iTunes. I have seen them live every time they have been in Indiana since 2011.
I still also buy anything from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and a few others like that as they come out.

I think these younger groups or artists are quite exciting. I know everyone here will disagree but I think Wings Wild Life would be popular with the very same young people today who love The Decemberists, The Lumineers, The Head And The Heart and Of Monsters And Men if , without fanfare, WWL could be re-released mysteriously under the guise of the fireman for instance. I think WWL is that fresh, honest and diverse. It holds up well for its age and sounds contemporary!

As I said about this thread, it is fun to see the purchases of other and comment on them, as well as posting your own list with comments. I was planning on commenting on my choices but it was so exhausting to list them all. Oasis - Definitely Maybe (Remastered Deluxe Edition) Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory (Deluxe Edition) I'm waiting for the Be Here Now Remaster. It probably won't come out until after Noel new album in March. The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards Jack White - Blunderbuss Jack White - Lazaretto The White Stripes - De Stijl The White Stripes - Icky Thump The White Stripes - The White Stripes I tend to get an album and if I like it, I want more. I liked Seven Nation Army when it came out quite a bit. I got Elephant, like it a lot and got a couple of the older albums. They all seemed pretty similar so I was good. I heard Cut's like a Buffalo, the Dead Weather song and liked it a lot. The album, Horehound was great. I decided to get more Jack White. I'm not sure what caused this last spark. Split Enz - True Colors I got Waiata when it was released. I've been meaning to go back and get all the old ones. Of course I was a fan of Crowded House too. One of the Finn kids is making music too. I've been wanting to check that out. Mungo Jerry - Baby Jump - The Definitive Collection - Some good stuff, too much kazoo. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home - I've got some holes in my Dylan collection. I didn't realize I was buying mono though. Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (Deluxe Edition) - I never bought the single disc so this was right up my alley. Led Zepplin I, II, and III Deluxe Editions Led Zeppelin - IV Deluxe Edition Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (Deluxe Edition) I already had III, IV and House of the Holy. I like the later ones better. I don't like Whole Lotta Love and the blues-ier stuff. But the early ones are better than the big hits on them. U2 - Songs of Innocence - a freebie Jethro Tull - 5 Disc Collection - Songs From the Wood, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch, 1980 A, The Broadsword and the Beast - I like these five in one sets you can get from different artist. The usually average out about $5 an album. Captain Beefheart - The Mirror Man Sessions Captain Beefheart - The Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot I'm not sure how I got on this Beefheart kick but I like the guitar tones on his songs. I've probably got more coming. Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - Gorrilla I finally cracked down and got this. It's the one with Death Cab For Cutie. The Orwells - Disgraceland - Great new band. I saw them on Letterman. You may recognize a song used on an iPad commercial. John Prine - John Prine John Prine - Sweet Revenge I've had Prime Prine, a greatest hits set for quite some time. Someone just passed me a new two disc best of set. That's all it took. I'll probably keep added to my Prine collection. Tom Petty - 5 Disc Set -Damn the Torpedoes, Hard Promises, Southern Accents, Full Moon Fever, Into the Great WIde Open Tom Petty - Songs and Music From The Motion Picture She's the One I actually went to get Songs From She's the One and saw the 5 disc set. I saw a story in Ultimate Classic Rock that it was an overlooked class. Supposedly Petty hates it. But it has Walls on it. A great song that not on his Greatest Hits album. (Some days are diamonds. Some days are rocks... Even walls fall down. Great song.) The rest: Various Artists - Garden State - Music From the Motion Picture The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones Singles Collection: The London Years The Guess Who - Power in the Music George Harrison - All Things Must Pass (2001 30th Anniversary Remaster) Royal Cresant Mob - Omerta Foster the People - Torches James Brown - Live at the Apollo (1962) Prince - The Hits/The B-Sides Hozier - Hozier The Black Angels - Clear Lake Forrest The Beach Boys - Keep an Eye On Summer (Deluxe Edition) Elton John - Rare Masters Parquet Courts - Content Nausea And of course: Various Artists - 4: John Paul George and Ringo - EP George Harrison - The Apple years Paul McCartney - RAM - (Deluxe Edition) iTunes Singles - Eat At Home / Smile Away Live and Uncle Albert Jam Paul McCartney - NEW (Collector's Edition) Paul McCartney and Wings - Venus and Mars (Super Deluxe Edition) Paul McCartney and Wings - Wings At the Speed of Sound (Super Deluxe Edition) Various Artists - The Art of McCartney Michael Salvatori, C Paul Johnson Etc...- Destiny Original Soundtracks (just Except and Relic of Hope) Paul McCartney - Hope For the Future - EP Kanye West - Only One (feat. Paul McCartney) Rihanna and Kanye West and Paul McCartney - FourFiveSeconds - Single Watch this all the way to the end. It's hilarious.

It features prominent use of horns and a male singer. I don't know if it was by a band or solo artist. It was a fairly recent hit, maybe around 18 months ago. I like it and want to buy it, whoever it was by. Whoa! An AFL fan? Me, too. Here's a website you might like to bookmark: talesfromtheamericanfootballleague.com/Close but no cigar!!! www.afl.com.au/

Hozier - Hozier I have, although they may prove to be too "spiritual " for me. You know, like Creed.
Hozier - CREED!? Take that back. Having the word 'church' in the title of his most well-known song doesn't mean the man's making religious music. Check out the lyrics and the meaning behind 'Take Me To Church'... Right. I was certainly off on this. I'd been meaning to come back here and fess up. Foreigner's God by Hozier came up on my iPod today and reminded me. It also reminded me that seeing Foreigner's God, From Eden and Take Me to Church, all songs on the album, made me jump to that conclusion. I was a little down on the album at the time. His voice is a little too high pitched; an almost Michael Bolton thing going one. I have too much new music. I haven't listened to much of this album yet. I like Jackie and Wilson a lot though.

I have really enjoyed the recent release by Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield called appropriately enough: Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott SmithThe album's tracklist is as follows: 1. Between the Bars 2. Baby Britain 3. Fond Farewell 4. Somebody That I Used to Know 5. Let’s Get Lost 6. Twilight 7. Ballad of Big Nothing 8. Angel in the Snow 9. Pitseleh 10. Angeles 11. Roman Candle 12. Memory Lane Here is a thoughtful(and positive) review of the album with good commentary on Elliott Smith himself from NPRMusic: www.npr.org/2015/03/08/390691282/fi...g-elliott-smithI knew very little about Elliott Smith other than he was a very respected kind of Punk/Folk songwriter/singer. He also loved the Beatles. ES apparently died by suicide(he had two stab wounds to his chest) in like 2003. He covered the Beatles "Because" on the American Beauty soundtrack. Seth and Jessica are touring this month on this tribute album and I was lucky enough to see them last Friday in Chicago. It was a spellbinding show. Sometimes just two acoustic guitars and a stand-up bass, or one acoustic guitar and baby grand piano, etc. They performed "I Will" because Elliott Smith cited the White Album as one of his first and greatest Rock and Roll influences and "I Me Mine," a song ES did live from time to time. Imagine how overjoyed I was to hear my new music hero Seth Avett perform with Jessica Lea Mayfield on two Beatles' songs! I kind of knew Jessica Lea Mayfield through The Avett Brothers(they are good friends and have toured together) but this release caused me to buy her three CDs at the merch table after the show. I now want to buy all of Elliott Smith's albums so Jessica and Seth did their job of sparking my interest in this haunted but brilliant artist, Elliott Smith. Seth and Jessica's takes on "Fond Farewell" and "Somebody I Used To Know" are my favorites, I think they are so radio-worthy so I will post the videos for them so you can get a flavor of this album: "Fond Farewell;" "Somebody I Used To Know:" Here is a live version of "Somebody I Used To Know" done by Seth and Jessica two weeks ago which is very close to how I heard and saw it, they used that kitchen set throughout the show:

To round out my recent purchases:
With Blasphemy So Heartfelt (2008), Jessica Lea Mayfield;
Tell Me (2011), Jessica Lea Mayfield;
Make My Head Sing (2014), Jessica Lea Mayfield
Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes: Old Dylan lyrics from around 1967 through 1970 put to music by several good artists today, one being Elvis Costello. I love this album, there are like three different male artists, Marcus Mumford included, and one female artist, Rhiannon Giddens, who take turns on lead vocals and I think that if they sang it, then they wrote the musical backing.
Here is my current favorite from the album, "Kansas City" with Johnny Depp on one of the guitars!
Hypnotic Eye: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Wow, just great Rock and Roll throughout! This is a great car album, kudos for Tom & Band getting a #1 album for this!
High Hopes: Bruce Springsteen. Different but it was meant to be. Tom Morello adds some guitar sounds not heard from Bruce since maybe the "Darkness" era.
The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11(Deluxe Edition) : I got this for a decent price on amazon.com using my Chrimble and birthday gift certificates. LOL, the next week PopMarket.com had it for even cheaper. Oh well, I had no gift cards for it. I haven't opened this boxset yet. It kind of seems like Spring music and it ain't Spring yet where I live, 31 degrees today.
