Oh. My. God. I've just witnessed THE absolute worst vocal performance of Paul's entire career ... all televised LIVE, a huge event for all generations of people to cringe at. When my girlfriend and I heard the opening music notes to MAYBE I'M AMAZED, we couldn't believe he was choosing THIS song!??! Of ALL his vast options, he chose a song he cannot realistically reach well anymore. We moaned to each other, and prepared for the worst yet hoped for the best. The emerging squeaks and quivers were quite sad, quite embarrassing. Quite desperate. We could spot Paul's ever-present red tongue, the result of needing to suck on throat drops before recent performances. Tragically, this did not help him. I have bounced back and forth at Paul, both defending his recent vocals and criticizing them, at various times. "When will Paul be DONE?" is always the pressing question. After seeing tonight's mutilation of a McCartney classic, I think that time is now finally here. I'm very curious to hear what less objective Macca fans than myself might think about this, but I'm already predicting they'll try to explain it away as Paul's voice having been weakened due to last night's Irving Plaza concert. To think that Paul has enough ego to attempt MAYBE I'M AMAZED at this venue... can he really not know his limits? And is there nobody out there who dares to whisper into his ear: "I think you may have to seriously think again, Paul"...?

I didn't watch tonight's SNL 40th and I will plan to watch if they post the show on NBC's site, Hulu or watch You Tube clips. After I see the performance, I will let you know what I think. All this darn cold weather doesn't help things.

My 17 and 18 years olds--and my wife--thought it was fine?!?
Maybe we're too sensitive as hyper Beatles fans. Regardless, I have ears and had the same reaction as JoeK when I heard the opening notes of "Maybe I'm Amazed"...oh my God, NO! Honestly, he cannot sing that song anymore. I'm embarrassed for him.

You could hear the sound man desparately trying to do something, anything, to enhance his vocal mike to make it sound better or fuller. Last week it was the Grammy debacle. Now this. I agree, of all the songs to choose.... He is still and always will be Beatle Paul. The great songwriter and legend from the greatest band there ever was. Tonite was not his night. Hard recover from a big gig just 20 hours earlier at the age of 72? Probably. Still love you Paul. Could have used John this week to tell you like it is. You always listened to him.

lowbasso, I actually forgot about SNL tonight and watched I.U. smash Minnesota at Assembly Hall.
I'll have to catch this somewhere else like Sally.

So, between Paul McCartney and Miley Cyrus, who would have guessed that Ms. Cyrus would have turned in the FAR superior performance this evening. I thought she was great on "50 Ways to Leave your Lover."
If Paul had left his quick performance with Paul Simon singing "I've Just Seen A Face", he wouldn't be getting crucified on Twitter. Hopefully, "The Walking Dead" kept most people from seeing him tonight.

Yeah, started off really shaky. I agree that the key needs to be changed, for it is too high. My wife who is not a huge fan thought it was fine, too.
I think the biggest surprises were how old Chevy Chase, Jack Nicholson, and a lot of the former SNL'ers looked and sounded.

On the bright side, maybe Paul's buddy, Kanye, will take a little heat off Macca as Mr. Kardashian was terrible as well. Without auto-tune to help, Kayne's voice cracked multiple times on "Only One." By the way, I thought the other Paul--Simon--did a very nice job on "Still Crazy...". He hit all of the right notes with the right phrasing (and even hit some high notes, very well for a man in his '70s).

Didn't see the 'Maybe I'm Amazed' clip yet, but the intro (w/Paul Simon) looks a bit desperate.
How exactly did Paul fall into the clutches of Lorne Michaels in the first place, and how do we explain the strange, powerful hold he has on Paul?

Although it did sound awkward at the beginning, I thought he sounded ok. I don't think he can sing the song the same way that he did when he was younger. At his age, he still can sing a lot better than I can.

Vocally he's not the Paul McCartney of old, he never used to struggle with his vocals, but, clearly he does now.
I thought he did a pretty good job for an old bloke clinging on to his career.
Paul should take heart that he is the second best singer of the remaining Beatles.

Ha, ha. Paul did the old guy with the shot voice again. He's such a cut-up.
For the 40th anniversary, how appropriate.
I bet they have him back for number 50.

. . . I thought he did a pretty good job for an old bloke clinging on to his career . . . Don't you think that's a bit harsh and inaccurate? Paul still has his writing, instrumental, and producing skills. I will grant that live singing can be inconsistent (he should not do live performances 2 days in a row, as he did this weekend), but he can still do a good album performance. Does anyone know of any complaints/negative reviews about his singing at the Irving? I'm not going to say his SNL singing was flawless or anywhere near representative of what he could do or has done, but he did hit those high notes - in key.

. . . Does anyone know of any complaints/negative reviews about his singing at the Irving? . . . I just read one review and it was positive. Made mention of the ragged singing on Jet, but that's it. Maybe it's something about TV sound mixes that showcase Paul's flaws, for most of his live concerts are pretty good.

I thought he started off shaky, then started really belting MIA with only minor cracks. I had no idea he played a concert the day before. Probably not a great move. I still think he should tour with Ringo with a similar formula to the TM concert. Ringo does a set with his All Stars, Paul does a little longer set, then all of them come out with a powerful 10 "rockestra" song finale. It will allow Paul to still tour and not wear down his voice. It might also attract more of the old "A" list All Starrs like Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton.

Sometimes he will have good days and sometimes he will struggle. The beginning was shaky but I thought later in the song it turned out ok. I saw him sing Maybe I'm Amazed live in 2013 and he was able to hit the high notes.

OMG alright Joe, I was so embarrassed on Facebook when I saw him sing *Maybe I'm Amazed*, the voice was trembling bad at the start??? I dreaded coming over to our site, to find out what I was going to read about his performance......As a Paul, Wings, Mad Hatter, (what ever you wanna call me) fan, I was saddened.....He better do something, slow down, chose different songs in his catalog, cut down on his touring etc, or else he'll end up like the Hollies - Alan Clarke, and end up with no voice at all? Can't understand why at his age, he choses the most complex songs in his catalogue to sing, and persistence to keep singing in its original key? With guitar, I've sung all his Beatles/Solo songs, and *Maybe I'm Amazed* would have to one of his worst songs to sing vocally, it is a b**ch (hitting the high C - Note), won't mention *Oh Darling*, even BOTR your hitting the high C, *Wildlife* was another etc? I feel Paul has abused his once velvet extraordinary tenor, by constantly touring, and by singing as mentioned high vocal songs such as eg Maybe I'm Amazed, Helter Skelter, and I've Got a Feeling... ? By thinking he can still scream many tunes like he did in his teens and 20's and 30's....The once beautiful voice is no more....A lesson to all those who have a good voice, STOP SCREAMING...... Amazes me how Tom Jones still has his soprano voice (doesn't he tour much?) Cliff Richard is OK, he can't hit the high notes like he used to?, Paul's voice is trembling & shot, the same with Elton John's, he's gone as well (prob worse? IMO)

Can't understand why at his age, he choses the most complex songs in his catalogue to sing, and persistence to keep singing in its original key? Rocko, this is right now a very crucial moment in Paul's 6-decades career. Paul has always loved to sing. Remember the boy who started out playing trumpet but gave it up because he realized he wouldn't be able to sing and play trumpet at the same time? Paul has some crucial decisions to meet head-on right now, before he completely embarrasses himself beyond any repair. The time has arrived where Paul can no longer sing high notes and ballads, or so it is seeming more and more as of late. What does he do, after forming a life for something like 60 years, based on living to sing and perform?? How does a proud lifelong artist like McCartney JUST STOP SINGING, AND DO OTHER THINGS..?? This is not the first time I have formed this opinion; I recall in 2005 watching Paul in horrible voice on the ELLEN show, but then going to see him live at Madison Square Garden also in later 2005, and being "amazed" that the guy was in good form and still had it!! But this time I'm not so sure. Maybe I will have to view more songs of Paul's performance from the Irving Plaza gig that was performed less than 24 hours before SNL just to decided if the SNL fiasco was a one-off affair. I know I saw a clip of Paul doing "Save Us" from Irving Plaza, and he sounded better there:

Here's another clip from Irving Plaza, less than 24 Hours before SNL... it's "Another Day", with Paul seemingly better able to reach the higher parts: Joe, with *Save Me* and *Another Day*, they are very simple to sing, the notes are nowhere as high as Maybe I'm Amazed, Long Tall Sally, Oh Darling, Helter Skelter, I've Got a Feeling etc....!
These (i.e. Save Me & AD) are the songs he should be singing........ Below are the bottom 3 strings and notes for a guitar, songs like Eight Days a Week, Lady Madonna, Save Me, Another Day etc, all fall in the low - 3rd String, and Medium - 2nd string range..... But the above mentioned in red & bold, all fall within the High - 1st string notes, (in bold & red below)....Includes also the ending to Hey Jude, and the 2nd half of BOTR) ...... GuitarLow3rd string G - A - B Medium2nd string B - C - D High 1st string E - F - G - A - B - CWith the set list from Irving Plaza (refer below) he was clever, and made sure all his songs were in the Low to Medium range, the only song he buggered up with was leaving *Maybe I'm Amazed*....? (Golden Slumbers prob another?) Honestly he should stop playing that Linda (tribute/love) song, who cares whether its his all time favourite or solo classic.....Get over it, and replace with another song he's never performed before... www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2015/02/paul_mccartney_41.htmlIf you read the comments, on that RS site (link below), gee do they give it to him, some were saying his tongue was red?, due to taking lozenges, sore throat from the night before, might have a virus etc? www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/paul-mccartney-miley-cyrus-paul-simon-captivate-at-snl-40-20150216

What Grammy debacle? Paul has written a No. 1 song (or soon to be) with Kenye West and they did a great live version of the song. Are you talking about him standing up during Evil Woman? Come on, no harm no foul. He just realized the camera was right on top of him and reacted to that. They are always going to shots of Paul on these shows. There is no way some nobody cameraman is going to interject himself into the moment and tell James Paul McCartney to sit down. I was not embarrassed at all by that. Paul was in the moment dancing to his pal Jeff Lynn's great song. Paul's fans are the harshest on him. As for the SNL 40 performance, he needs to change the key he sing MIA in an it will be fine or just drop it. I agree it was not good.
