Mike Brown, the keyboard player and chief songwriter for the Left Banke, passed away over the weekend. Brown was a great songwriter and the Left Banke were a great, though short lived group. The pairing of Brown's baroque melodies with singer Steve Martin's beautiful vocals was a perfect match, but lots of infighting kept the group from success beyond the great hits "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina" and their fantastic debut album WALK AWAY RENEE/PRETTY BALLERINA (hey album titles wasn't their strength). Really it is the US equivalent of the Zombies ODDESSEY AND ORACLE and not far removed from such Beatles classic as "Eleanor Rigby" and "For No One". RIP MIKE BROWN.

Growing up, I always liked Walk Away Renee. No doubt now he can get his book, Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina, published.
