Just got back from seeing the Stones in San Diego. Goal!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who puts down the Stones as dinosaur relics must see themselves as one, too. The Stones RAWK, still. Don't miss if they come your way (Indianopolis is on the radar). Ticket prices? Don't make that excuse. Memories are priceless. Seeing THE band from the 60s still throwing heavy punches will be a gas, gas, gas. Don't wanna hear no one say, "Well, back in 1980 . . . " or whatever. This is now, and the Stones deliver.

They came to Louisville that year. Mixed Emotions was the hit and Mick looked like Randy Travis. I wasn't too hip to see them. Steel Wheels had some good stuff on it but just kind of blasé as a whole. I'd seen them in '81 with the Tattoo You Tour. A much better era for them. Totally different head.

Though I must admit that only this past weekend I caught "Mixed Emotions" on a college radio station while in my car, and it sounded great. Always liked that song (and "Almost Hear You Sigh", or whatever the title is). But I didn't like The Stones live.

It's "THE band from the 60s still throwing heavy punches." THAT is a fact. Dylan is not a band, Paul is not a band, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, . . . are still out there "throwing punches, but the Stones are the only 60s BAND still packing stadiums. The Who are coming out, but they don't tour regularly and they could not sell out a stadium. So, you see a band once 27 years ago and that's your measure? Have you stopped seeing movies by any director when they put out a bad movie? I don't think so. The Stones are playing better, are fitter and less reliant on stimulants or relaxers, equipment and sound systems are better, large screens are available for those in the cheap seats, etc. If you read the reviews from Steel Wheels on (once they got "old"), you'd be hard pressed to find a bad one. Off nights, certainly, but no recommendations that they should pack it in. Unlike Paul shows and TV appearances that have questioned his ability to perform live, no one as intimated the same thing for the Stones. I do not doubt that the Stones may have sucked when you saw them, nor do I fault you for not liking them when you saw them. But, it does not seem to me to be valid to predetermine ones enjoyment of a band today based on a show back in the 80s, unless one really doesn't like them at all, of course. The Stones are a live band and should be experienced as such. If one wants to experience what real rock and roll should sound like, go to the experts. The Stones are the standard. Raw, gritty, pulsing, hard, dirty, ballsy, sexy, edgy, enthusiastic . . . It's all still there with the Stones.

So, you see a band once 27 years ago and that's your measure? I have seen footage of The Stones performing live from all decades over the years. I don't like them live very much. - or, at least not Mick's way of singing the words live. Terrible analogy. Every movie is different, from the actors to the script, etc. The Stones are The Stones. I have enjoyed Paul every time I have seen him (several times now). I don't really judge by what you tell me I should - including what Stones Fans and/or critics or reviewers dictate. And on the contrary, I have sometimes heard it said that The Stones should retire already many, many times -- for decades now. And I do agree. That's nice, but I don't look to you to 'validate' things. They're not the standard for me. They'll always be The Beatles' little brothers. But I do like their older studio music and I own most of their albums ranging from the early '60s up through selected latter releases like STEEL WHEELS. I own nothing from them from 1990 - 2015, and I feel the dead horse has long been beaten to death.

I love Stripped, which is a later live LP of both small club rock and live in the studio material. They remain the greatest live rock-n-roll band in the world. The Beatles gave up any chance of competing for that crown in 1970.

Hard to believe they've only released 3 studio albums in the last 25 years.
I liked Voodoo Lounge a whole lot. You Got Me Rocking, Sparks Will Fly, I Go Wild, Brand New Car, Sweethearts Together, Suck on the Jugular and Blinded By Rainbows.
I didn't buy the other two. (I thought I got Stripped but I guess I didn't). I not sure why I quit when the last one I got was a great album.
I guessI quit because: 1. I didn't have the money at the time 2. I went off in a new direction (was getting into something else at the time) 3. I didn't like the songs getting played (Anybody Seen My Baby?, Saint of Me from Bridges to Babylon). I haven't heard anything from A Bigger Bang.
I think I have everything up to Voodoo, the last couple of years, getting the early ones.

But I really couldn't care less personally, as I was never a "live" guy, and what REALLY matters is what an artist is able to capture in THE RECORDING STUDIO. Now, THAT is what endures for all time, and what remains after they're gone and cannot perform on stage anymore. It's nice to be able to say you saw so-and-so "live" back in their day ... but the records are what it all comes down to. And of course we all know how much better The Beatles fare on that score!

Hey Sayne -- every time you don't like someone's answer, you come up with things like "taken out of context", or "you missed the point", or "you don't understand the analogy". Look -- I don't like The Rolling Stones live, and that's just the way it is. For someone who says people miss points, or "don't understand", etc... I will re-write exactly what I said earlier:
I have seen footage of The Stones performing live from all decades over the years. I don't like them live very much. - or, at least not Mick's way of singing the words live.
And hilariously, at the very end even YOU concede my point:
Exactly - the same thing we've seen for 50 years. And one knows already what one's going to get. No thanks.
(But yet --- you say.. who know, things may be different?) "Different song order" --- woooooh! I couldn't care less when Mick talks out the words unlike the records.
I have said I like the Stones -- ON RECORD. I have said I do not like the Stones LIVE. Since The Stones Live are The Stones Live, I'll stick to their records. (Studio, of course).

The Beatles conceded to becoming a studio band and produced excellence, but I had the benefit of watching the Beatles playing live in the studio with well produced stereo clips synced to the appropriate film footage in 1969 (Get Back DVD bootleg). They were never going to go in that direction, but based on how the Get Back material sounded, they could have competed with all of them Generally, there is something to be said about live performances, especially if they are well recorded. Live music is not for everyone, but I happen to like both live and studio. I do prefer my live stuff not to be grainy audio.

I may go to the Stones after all. As sayne mentioned, the Stones play Indy July 4 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If I go I am bringing a blade in case I am attacked by bikers! I saw Gimme Shelter! Great Thread sayne, I was pumped when I read your opening post. I still kick myself in the ass for not seeing the Stones in 1989. I loved the song "Mixed Emotions." It was Macca or Stones in my budget back then. Macca won. I am glad I saw Paul twice in 1989(two out of three Chicago concerts). I have only seen the Stones once and that was Louisville 1981 and that was my wildest concert ever! I wonder if I saw debjorgo there?! Sex, drugs and Rock and Roll baby! I was 18 and went with my former high school teacher and his smoking hot girlfriend. The dude was just then an ex-teacher because he liked to party with students! They brought this smoking hot 28 to 30 year old female who dug me because I was 18. She was hardly a "Mrs. Robinson" but to me she was an older lady. That was a concert! Now days people bring their freaking kids to concerts and families wear their matching concert shirts and snack on health food! Concerts are so "G" rated now. Not the Stones, I made out the entire "Beast Of Burden" higher than a kite! The beer flowed too but I looked like I was 25 so I was good.

I may have passed you that joint laced with thai-stick that one of our guys brought. That was the good old days. If I remember right, the Steel Wheels show got a network broadcast. It seems like I saw it on TV. I don't think it had the Honkytonk Women or the large penis balloons that they had at the Louisville show in '81. At least think I saw balloons at that show.

Like you, I also loved the song "Mixed Emotions".... pity though that Mick "live" just didn't do it (or other Stones songs) the justice of the recording!

LOL, when I watch the 1989/1990 live Stones clips, I almost think they sound too polished but I figured you would like that Joe, you are more like our man John Lennon who preferred the artists' records to their live renditions of the records! I thought debjorgo was hilarious but accurate when he said Mick looked like Randy Travis because I think Mick's hair was at its shortest(still longer than I've ever worn it).

That is kickass! The Stones in their youth and all looking and sounding great! I was surprised to see Bill Wyman doing some back-up vocals. You can't watch that video where they sing an original composition and say the Beatles of that same era were light years better. No way. A video like that should put the fear of God in smug Beatles fans who dismiss the Stones like they do their own snot!

Some local people here in Logansport, Indiana are catching the Stones at various venues and all rave about them, they are saying the Stones kick ass live! The most recent was a group of locals who saw The Rolling Stones in Milwaukee at Summerfest. They gushed about the concert, one punter posting on Facebook, "Paul McCartney who?", so the old rivalry heats up as the two tour at the same time! The Stones will be in Indiana on all days, July 4th, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but I value my life and won't see the Stones at any motor speedway, Altamont fresh on my mind! I may travel and catch them at a safer venue. My days of sex, drugs and Rock and Roll at concerts are over....I think.
