It's when I hear Ringo drum on music like POB that I hunger to hear him like that again. It's been said so often but drumming with another drummer is a disappointing way to see/hear Ringo. Unfortunately that's been his MO for a long time now.

I agree Nine. I don't know why Ringo felt the need to have a second drummer on his recordings throughout the 1970's and it is too bad he is out front most of his All-Starr concerts. Watching Ringo drum is like heaven on earth.

Someone asked Ringo in one of his interviews why he kept a second drummer on tour, and his answer was something like (and I'm paraphrasing), "I'm 70(whatever age he was at the time)bloody years old - give me a bloody break!" But I agree with JSD (as usual).

I think Ringo's 2nd drummer thing is to allow him to sing and perform to the audience. In his 1940s 'showbiz' way of thinking, Ringo probably feels the guy whose name is on the marquee needs to come to the front of the stage and sing. So, he has a 2nd drummer to play while he does this.
Now, of course, he could just send that drummer packing while he drums... maybe he should, I dunno.
Did you guys know there was one night in about 1993 when Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were doing a one-off at the Viper Room (I think) on Sunset Strip, and their drummer (soon to be fired/quit) didn't show up? They actually thought to call Ringo and have him come down to play the gig with them... but then their drummer eventually showed up at the last minute. Would have been awesome. Ringo, alone, on skins, playing with a hot band to generation X at the world's hippest nightclub.

I never heard that, panther! Most cool! It's mentioned (briefly) in the Tom Petty doc Runnin' Down a Dream (which is awesome, btw).

Your thought on Ringo using another drummer live is probably spot-on Panther. What I never understood was Ringo's use of another drummer on his 1970's studio recordings! I know he used the great Jim Keltner but we are not talking about guitarists John Lennon or George Harrison, we are talking Ringo Starr! I think since Time Takes Time Ringo has done all of the drumming for his albums. That is a positive thing if true.

I think Rings was basically in an alcoholic haze from about 1975 to 1988.
