Wow, there were some Beatles related films that I didn't even know existed referenced in that article, like Snodgrass.
I loved Nowhere Boy despite the whitewashing of Mimi apparently by Yoko and Paul(per this article) .
The Beatles scene in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is hilarious, the fight that breaks out with the now assertive Paul and John characters is classic!
I would recommend The Hours And Times which focus on John and Brian in Spain and depicts their alleged sexual encounter there. It is pretty compelling.
I have never seen all of Backbeat although I have the CD soundtrack and played it a lot back in the early 1990's.
I think one of the first portrayals of John was among the best, the actor playing him in Birth Of The Beatles. The worst is easily that 1985 movie John and Yoko: A Love Story. John was portrayed as such a wimp. None of his sarcasm or anger came through.

Stephen McKenna did capture the essence of John in BIRTH OF THE BEATLES, I agree.
Next up was Ian Hart, from BACKBEAT.. I thought he did a good job as Lennon and captured him.
One of the worst was Aaron Johnson, in NOWHERE BOY. He just never seemed like John to me.

Wow, there were some Beatles related films that I didn't even know existed referenced in that article, like Snodgrass. ..... Snodgrass is an interesting piece. A short 25 or so minutes. Details : Snodgrass IMDBIt's the story of a John Lennon who walked out on the Beatles in 1962 because he objected to "How Do You Do It?" being the song to launch their recording career. It sees him out of work aged 50 and begins as he's taking the bus to a job interview. He has become an eccentric, bitter and disillusioned man in his middle age. The Beatles have carried on without John, achieving a modicum of fame. They are dubbed in it as "almost as big as the Hollies". With John bemused how they could record such dire songs as they continue doing their "Greatest Hits" tour. In the background we see a poster listing their "Greatest Hits Tour" - with a set list of - “How Do You Do It”, "Yellow Submarine” and “Yesterday”. Along with other “Ding Dong”, "Mary Had a Little Lamb”, “C Moon”, “Mull of Kintyre and “You’re Sixteen” It's awkwardly amusing at times, full of Lennon type witticisms, snarling angry moments and even unspoken moments of reflection on what might have been. John is played by Ian Hart (the same guy who plays him in Backbeat). Only this is set in the early 1990s and he's living in the English Midlands. Hart brings this fictional John Lennon, with a real chip on his shoulder, to life. So much so you could believe this is how he would have become had the Beatles thing never got off the ground. "Snodgrass", we learn, is the name that this John Lennon uses for anyone he sees as a 'conformist' and straight. It was a Playhouse Production for Sky TV here in the UK but I cannot find a legal, (in fact any) copy of it online. Not even a promo. I get the feeling it may vanish into obscurity and will never be seen. You can still listen to the soundtrack online if you want : Snodgrass SoundtrackIt's a full of instrumental music but the songs are very Lennonesque (Julian Lennonesque)

There was also the VH1 TV movie "Two of Us"
Jared Harris (son of Irish actor Richard Harris) also played Lennon in this dramatisation of Paul and John's last meeting at the Dakota in 1976.

Thanks Stavros for the info on Snodgrass! I shudder to think of a Beatles without John Lennon. I need to watch it some day.
I liked Two Of Us. The rooftop scene was very poignant even though fictional. I could imagine John and Paul having that talk in 1976 or 1977.

Two of Us was originally supposed to have, I believe, Wings music in it. The promo copy I have has it, but it was taken out before the film aired.

Don't you mean Hours and Times? Ooops That one was tough to watch and not just for the sex. It was based on a "what if?".

A scene where some legal eagle, wearing nothing but his court gown, Mumbo Stomps his way into the bathroom, disrobes, climbs into the tub and fulfills a Double Fantasy with said Mr Hicks.

I hate those sneaky, one-off man crushes. They come from out the blue!

Thanks Stavros for the info on Snodgrass! I shudder to think of a Beatles without John Lennon. I need to watch it some day...... Well here's your chance my friend....Patience is a true virtue. I really hope this plays in North America. It's an amusing but rather awkward portrayal of a "What If?" most Beatles fans would never consider. Enjoy, Endure or ignore!
