I've always thought that Joe Cocker's version is the best version of this song (yes, I know, many of you hate it), but even I can laugh at this . . .
PS For those of you who don't know, look for Henry Mc Cullough singing backup, badly.

I don't know that I'd say it's the 'best' version as I'm partial to Ringo's version on 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band', hard to beat the original, you know. But I will say that Joe Cocker's cover of 'With A Little Help From My Friends' is one of my all-time favorite covers of a Beatle song, by anyone.
On a similar note, I thought Shawn Colvin did a great cover on the Beatles song 'I'll Be Back' a few years ago.

Also, is it me, or did he always look like he needed to use the bathroom re-e-e-e-e-e-ally badly?

ROTFLMFAO! That was hilarious! "I want my Fred[Flintstone], I want my Fred in leather." Priceless. ;D Was Cocker's hit version of this a studio version or was it a live take? All I can say is that the acid must have been bad at Woodstock.

The hit version (the one that's on the Classic Rock formats, the "Wonder Years" theme, etc.) is the studio version, with female back-up singers.

The one I like best is the studio version from 1968. And yes, it has the female back-up singers.

That's funnier than a green turd in a pickle barrel.
I normally don't enjoy other artists covering Beatles songs because they usually fall short of the original but Joe Cocker's Woodstock performance is simply amazing. If you have ever had the good fortune to see Joe in concert (after he conquered the bottle) you’ll know that he leaves it all on the stage - blood, sweat and a shredded lung. There aren't too many performers that could howl and scream as Joe could (in his prime) and I say God bless 'im for putting a different spin on a Beatles classic.

I always prefer the Beatles version to the cover version. As a kid I hated Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends". The Wonder Years softened my feelings and now I rather like it, though I much prefer Ringo and the Beatles.
