Actually John was closer friends with Elton John and he asked Elton John who accepted,to be Sean's Godfather too. Don't these comments belong on the "Elton John dies" thread? You about had me pissed until you cited the Funeral/Love Lies reference. A great song. I certainly am a bigger fan of Elton's. I'm just like JohnS here. I have Young Americans and a three disc best of. But there are very few songs I skip over, except maybe your favorites. I tend to want to retire songs after I've heard them so many times. The songs I like, mentioned above, I really like a lot. The 70s were a lot like the 60's, in that all the best artists influenced each other. David was certainly in the middle of all that. Without David, I don't think Elton's songs would have been as imaginative as they were. Elton's flamboyant stage persona continued into the studio around the time of Yellow Brick Road and the songs were much more than your standard piano singer/song writer recordings. Paul's early 70s hair was directly influence by David's. (Don't hold that against David.) No stating the fact that John was closer with Elton John and that he asked him to be Sean's Godfather, was in response to Yoko saying how close John and David and even David and Sean were. And Elton John was writing really good songs as early as 1970 before David Bowie's career became as big as it did,so I hardly think it was David Bowie's influence on Elton which certainly wouldn't make Elton better,it would be the other way around!

I don't want to spoil the party,no pun intended, but Paul McCartney is still in the Guinness Book of World Records since October 1979 as the most successful song composer of all time and David Bowie was not as great as early solo Paul and John.I personally only like 3 of his songs of the ones I've heard,Changes,Heroes and Space Oddity.I really also think that Elton John's songs from 1971-1974 were much better. Not that it will matter that much to fans on here, but the Russian music reviewer George Starostin back in the late 90's early 2000's gave David Bowie a C rating,he also gave this to solo George Harrison and Elton John, but gave Paul McCartney,Stevie Wonder and John Lennon a B rating.I've also never heard a David Bowie song nearly as good or great, and it is great as Elton's Funeral For A Friend Love Lies Bleeding. I know. Being the Beatle fan I did mention that Macca was more successful. But the whole point was that Paul was once in a very successful band that certainly paved the way for a successful solo career and tended not to push the boundaries too much once he'd left the Beatles/Wings. Bowie (other than Tin Machine) was pretty much a solo artist all his career and continued to be innovative right up until his last album. Sometimes if worked, sometimes it didn't. I have never heard of George Starotsin. Even if I had, his opinion, is no more or less valid than anyone else's in a pub debate because music is very subjective.

And we get it. You don't rate Bowie. That's OK.

Has anyone ever caught the Life On Mars lyrics "Now the workers have struck for fame, 'Cause Lennon's on sale again"? The song is from Hunky Dory, a late 1971 album. Funny, he later wrote and recorded a song with John Lennon called Fame.

Just got hit with a new wave of "Bowie dies". I'm listening to Oasis doing I Am the Walrus and I'm putting David Bowie songs in my current listening playlist.
And I'm not sure what made me think to do it. (Yeah, maybe some alcohol involved).
I've been on youtube putting in my favorite Bowie songs. Maybe that was it.
David Bowie is dead. Damn!
Again. I'm not that crazy about everything, but the songs I like, I love. We've lost David Bowie.
That's a drag.
