He was certainly one of my favorites through the years. So many good songs. My favorites were Modern Love, Ashes to Ashes and the Man Who Sold the World. Both his version and Nirvana's version of the Man Who Sold the World has been in my Current Music playlist, my go-to list for good music.

This photo was taken at the 1981 Uncle Floyd show in the Bottom Line club in New York City. I had recently seen Bowie in the Elephant Man on Broadway and told him how much I enjoyed his perfect for which he thanked me. This photo is in my Monkees book, as you all know Bowie's real name is David Jones and he changed it to avoid confusion with Davy Jones. A great and unique artist. RIP.

I was shocked to hear of this, some hours ago now, on the six o'clock news. Just yesterday I had bought a copy of his new album and played one track from it, Lazarus, this morning. Very sad and unexpected news.

I echo KC, I am absolutely stunned and caught off guard by this! His fans probably knew he was ill but I had not heard or read such. This is one of those huge impact deaths in Rock and Roll. I was certainly a fan of David Bowie's singles. Young Americans is the only studio album of his I own and obviously I have that because John was involved in it but I love it on its own. But I have a couple good compilations which I thoroughly enjoy. Wow. Damn, that is one of those headlines that you hate to see, causes one to almost gasp. R.I.P. David Bowie!

Bowie's new album, Blackstar, is number 1 on iTunes. I don't know where it was in the list yesterday, but Best of Bowie is number 4. I doubt it was listed yesterday.

I was watching Live Aid on a small B & W TV set with cold Buds in my back yard and went ballistic at first when two people approached behind Paul thinking it was George and Ringo as Martha Quinn hinted at earlier in the day (was watching the ABC version with the old fashioned antennas, and earlier watching it indoors on MTV). I was disappointed it was "only" Pete and David, but in hindsight-that would have made for an extremely lame and anti-climatic way for the Beatles to reunite on stage.

So, is it pronounced Bo-wie, like a bow and arrow or is it pronounced Boo-wie, like boo, I'm a ghost.
Craig Ferguson used to say "It's pronounce Bow-ie, like bow before the queen". "Have you heard HIM say it?" "Hi, I'm David Bow-ie".

David singing George's Try Some Buy Some I thought this was going to be pure dreck but it was pretty good. Not as mournful sounding as George's version.

Steve has an article on his Beatles Facebook page about David's relationships with John, Paul, & Ringo where he says May Pang tells the story of the night (she and John were living together in NYC at the time) when she and John had David over to dinner along with Paul & Linda! Oh to have been a fly on the wall in their dining room that night! Sitting at the dinner table with John Lennon & Paul McCartney! Has May ever told us about that evening and what was said or discussed at the dinner table? ?

I used to say that the two best things that came out of the 70's were David Bowie and the Ramones (Yes, I know Bowie's first real album came out in 1969). Many times I stick to that belief.
David's death is HUGE. I get profoundly sadder and sadder the more I ponder our loss. He was a good guy, too. David, you tacky thing, you're a star man, now. I thank you.

Yoko Ono's statement which she released yesterday: "John and David respected each other. They were well matched in intellect and talent. As John and I had very few friends we felt David was as close as family. After John died, David was always there for Sean and me. When Sean was at boarding school in Switzerland, David would pick him up and take him on trips to museums and let Sean hang out at his recording studio in Geneva. For Sean this is losing another father figure. It will be hard for him, I know. But we have some sweet memories which will stay with us forever." imaginepeace.com/archives/21641Under Pressure David Bowie and Freddie Mercury A Cappella

I caught up with an old friend last night for a beer or two. He was a massive Bowie fan and understandably devastated by the news. It seems that his illness was kept from all but his closest circle of friends and family.
I have always been more of a casual "Bowie" fan. Occasionally buying an album here and there.
But I was still shocked that we've lost, arguably, Britain's most successful and innovative solo artist in rock.
Here's one of his very last tracks. Apparently he knew the end was near and this (and the album Blackstar) was a parting gift to his fans,
R.I.P David Bowie.

I don't want to spoil the party,no pun intended, but Paul McCartney is still in the Guinness Book of World Records since October 1979 as the most successful song composer of all time and David Bowie was not as great as early solo Paul and John.I personally only like 3 of his songs of the ones I've heard,Changes,Heroes and Space Oddity.I really also think that Elton John's songs from 1971-1974 were much better. Not that it will matter that much to fans on here, but the Russian music reviewer George Starostin back in the late 90's early 2000's gave David Bowie a C rating,he also gave this to solo George Harrison and Elton John, but gave Paul McCartney,Stevie Wonder and John Lennon a B rating.I've also never heard a David Bowie song nearly as good or great, and it is great as Elton's Funeral For A Friend Love Lies Bleeding.

Actually John was closer friends with Elton John and he asked Elton John who accepted,to be Sean's Godfather too. Don't these comments belong on the "Elton John dies" thread? You about had me pissed until you cited the Funeral/Love Lies reference. A great song. I certainly am a bigger fan of Elton's. I'm just like JohnS here. I have Young Americans and a three disc best of. But there are very few songs I skip over, except maybe your favorites. I tend to want to retire songs after I've heard them so many times. The songs I like, mentioned above, I really like a lot. The 70s were a lot like the 60's, in that all the best artists influenced each other. David was certainly in the middle of all that. Without David, I don't think Elton's songs would have been as imaginative as they were. Elton's flamboyant stage persona continued into the studio around the time of Yellow Brick Road and the songs were much more than your standard piano singer/song writer recordings. Paul's early 70s hair was directly influenced by David's. (Don't hold that against David.)
