There have been articles written, numerous threads on several message boards, and various opinions voiced about what a single disc WHITE ALBUM would look like. I don't want to re-hash everyone just making their album. We know they will all be different. But for arguments sake let's say this board is charged with making a single disc WHITE ALBUM. I'm going to say it could have 15 songs (since the actual album had 30) and since "Not Guilty" and "What's The New Mary Jane" were available they can be included in the lists. So I'm looking for you to put songs into 5 categories: CATEGORY 1-these songs MUST be on any WHITE ALBUM. It is inconceivable to you that anyone could leave them off. CATEGORY 2-songs you personally would include, but you can understand how someone could leave them off. CATEGORY 3-borderline songs. May or may not be on it. You could go either way on these. CATEGORY 4-songs you personally wouldn't consider, but you can understand how someone else might include them. CATEGORY 5-Songs you feel MUST NOT be on a single disc WHITE ALBUM I'll compile results (4 points for category 1, 3 points for category 2, etc. down to zero for category 5) after it seems as many people have participated as are going to.

Hey Bulldog, The Inner Light, Lady Madonna, the songs coach mentioned, I'd rather make a three disc set if there were enough songs.

I’m sort of with George Martin on this, but not completely. I think a single disc White Album really could have been close to the greatest album of all time. On the other hand, I see the logic and attraction of the two disc set as well.
For me, it really gets down to how the following albums would have been configured. With, say, the “best” 14 songs taken for a single LP set, how would the remaining 16 tracks have been subsequently utilised? I would not like it if the price of a wonderful single disc White Album was that it be followed by a Beatles album that was considered second rate, by their standards.
I remember in the past we have thought about things like a Beatles set that collected the 1968 and 1969 singles, plus a few odds and ends, in order to create an extra studio album for the standard catalogue. Maybe something along those lines could have been organised. That is, a 1968 album could have been assembled containing singles and some of the excess White Album tracks, to be followed by a 1969 release. But, if that was not feasible, then I am generally content with the way things actually panned out.

I'm NOT with George Martin on this, I am with Paul: ("I'm not one for 'oh it was one too many of them' ... it was great, it sold, it's the Bloody Beatles White Album, shut up!" ) . Everything The Beatles had done before then was always so precise and perfect and well-honed that it was refreshingly unique at the time to put out a double LP of so many versatile sounding songs and snippets. I wouldn't have it any other way, and after The White Album we go back to the more predictably well crafted single LPSs -- so there!

What if they had come back from India, met at Esher, and decided to release 4 albums featuring each band member's songs, one every 6 months during 1968 and 1969. George would have got his back log out, Paul's could have been released first, John could have included Mary Jane and Cold Turkey and contributions from Yoko. Ringo could still have done Sentimental Journey. Use the White Album photos a the album covers.

It's a different concept for the thread, but maybe that keeps the band together for a few more years. Paring the White Album down to one disc would have caused more fighting.

Coach, what about "Hey Jude/Revolution."
I wish those could have been squeezed on the two vinyl records without cutting anything else!

Yeah I remember we had a thread on either this board or another board about making THE WHITE ALBUM a triple disc, including not only those two, but Not Guilty, Mary Jane, Lady Madonna, The Inner Light, Across The Universe, and the 4 new songs that turned up on YELLOW SUBMARINE!

I think Ringo might have been in trouble. Having said all that, I hope enough members supply their actual categorised lists so coachbk can assemble the board's official single LP White Album.

Yes - This is always a great topic for a Beatles discussion. First I will play the game..... CATEGORY 1 - Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Helter Skelter, I Will, Julia, Revolution 1, Yer Blues ** CATEGORY 2 - Happiness is a Warm Gun, Ob-la-di Ob-la-da, Martha My Dear, Birthday, Sexy Sadie, Goodnight, Mother Nature's Son, CATEGORY 3 - Everybody's Got Something to Hide...., Long, Long, Long, Honey Pie, Glass Onion, Bungalow Bill, I'm So Tired, Piggies, Can You Take Me Back CATEGORY 4 - Don't Pass Me By (sorry Ringo), Rocky Racoon, Savoy Truffle CATEGORY 5 - Revolution No.9, Wild Honey Pie, Why Don't We Do it in the Road And, if I'm allowed to I would also say that the Anthology version of "Across the Universe" has to be in Category 1. I'm sure it was recorded in early - mid 1968. Further tweaking things I would release two singles from the sessions "Hey Jude" b/w "What's the New Mary Jane" so "Revolution b/w Not Guilty" can also be released and be a proper standalone A-Side. ----------------------------------------------------------- Now I've played the game I say leave the Beatles White Album as it is. It's an eclectic mix of rock, blues, country, music hall, indie, folk and avant garde. The White Album holds together as a double album and is best enjoyed from start to finish as it was intended.

The Beatles' version of Not Guilty came up in my car today. It's almost jarring how finished it sounds. And it's a good tune.
It must had been pretty disheartening for George that it didn't make the final cut for the White Album.
I prefer Piggies and Savory Truffle but I would probably had agreed to a 3:19 edit/delete of Revolution #9. Second thought, get rid of Goodnight.

I'm glad they put it out as a double. My only gripe would be (a) "Revolution 9" -- this was appeasing John too much, and (b) "Wild Honey Pie" -- a fragment only on there because Pattie Boyd liked Paul playing it all the time in Rishikesh.
Those two tracks (and 'Wild Honey' is just a fragment) were silly choices when "Hey Jude", "Not Guilty", "Across the Universe", etc. were available.
But it's good they put out a double album before they were done. Doubles are cool.
Here's one to chew on, though: If this one hadn't been a double, surely either 'Get Back/Let It Be' or 'Abbey Road' would have been. I could see an 'Abbey Road'-period double album being really good, in the sense that it would surely have had tracks like 'All Things Must Pass', 'Junk', 'Teddy Boy', etc.

So based on five people voting, here's what a single disc WHITE ALBUM would look like: SIDE 1: 1. Back In The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da 4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5. Martha My Dear 6. I'm So Tired 7. Happiness Is A Warm Gun SIDE 2: 1. Birthday 2. Yer Blues 3. Mother Nature's Son 4. Blackbird 5. I Will 6. Julia 7. Helter Skelter
A good album that I could live with except for Yer Blues, one of my least favorite. Substitute Me And My Monkey for Yer Blues and add another George song (Piggies or Not Guilty) and I find this a superior album to what was released.

However, the breakdown is 8 McCartney, 5 Lennon, 1 Harrison and 0 Starr songs. I doubt if that would have been acceptable at the time to either John, George, or Ringo. I think we need the input of further categorised lists from other posters to correct this.

Ringo could still have done Sentimental Journey. Use the White Album photos a the album covers. I've been meaning to expand on this post. My thought is that the Beatles would release a 14 song album around October 1968 and each would follow with a solo album in December or early 1969. Here is my Beatles album using more of the band oriented songs: THE BEATLES SIDE 1: 1. Back To The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da 5. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill 6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (ANTHOLOGY 3 version) 7. Happiness Is A Warm Gun SIDE 2: 1. Birthday 2. Yer Blues 3. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey 4. Don't Pass Me By 5. Helter Skelter 6. Revolution 7. Hey Jude A non-album single "Hey Bulldog"/"It's Only A Northern Song" would follow (those just have to be Beatles songs) Now for the solo albums: JOHN SIDE 1: 1. I'm So Tired 2. Sexy Sadie 3. Cry Baby Cry 4. Child Of Nature 5. Across The Universe 6. Julia SIDE 2: 1. Revolution 1 2. Cold Turkey 3. What's The New Mary Jane 4. Revolution #9 5. Good Night PAUL SIDE 1: 1. Martha My Dear 2. Blackbird 3. Rocky Racoon 4. Step Inside Love 5. Los Paranoias 6. Why Don't We Do It In The Road 7. I Will SIDE 2: 1. Mother Nature's Son 2. Junk 3. Wild Honey Pie 4. Honey Pie 5. Can You Take Me Back 6. All Together Now 7. Goodbye I'm making "You Know My Name" the flip of "Lady Madonna" to allow "The Inner Light" to be on the George album GEORGE SIDE 1: 1. Piggies 2. Savoy Truffle 3. The Inner Light 4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (with guest Eric Clapton) 5. Long Long Long SIDE 2: 1. Sour Milk Sea 2. Circles 3. Not Guilty 4. Dehradun 5. It's All Too Much And Ringo releases SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Hey Bulldog, The Inner Light, Lady Madonna, the songs coach mentioned, I'd rather make a three disc set if there were enough songs. I was about ready to respond to the Rocky Raccoon thread where coach says Rocky is an easy one to skip in a One Disc White Album exercise. I was going to say that I wouldn't play that game because there are no easy skips. I figured I'd go back and find out what I did say for the last One Disc thread. "I'd rather make a three disc set." Even better!
