I'm not sure I thought of it before or if anyone has mentioned it but John's spastic, retard carrying on probably owes more to Jerry Lewis than anybody.

Oh God, the Elephant's Memory saxophone on 'Imagine'... that's just terrible. John's vocal is also pretty poor -- looks like he might have been out on a bender the night before.
Might have been enjoyable if they could have kept Yoko away from the microphone. Sadly, that's never been possible.

John would not have had much exposure to Jerry Lewis as a youngster, and he was doing that spastic stuff well before fame. It was a feature of British schools, it's just that John was the only one to take it on stage, everyone else grew out of it.

It's odd to see a mainstream entertainer of Jerry Lewis's generation onstage singing (well, trying to) "Give Peace a Chance" with John and his motley crew. In those days, that was a very divisive thing to do -- the Smothers Brothers (which George Harrison appeared on in '68) basically lost their show because it was too liberal and dangerous for network.

That was pretty cool. All celebrities were pretty rough on that Jerry Lewis telethon, it wasn't as polished as telethons are today, starting with that one right after 9/11 with the somber sets and the obviously serious tone.
Jerry Lewis' telethon was always more informal, come as you are kind of thing. And it could be zany!
