Just got home in the last half hour. Still getting organized, but great show. I'll be writing tonight, but if you have any specific questions that you don't think I'll get to in the story(ies), say so...

Apparently Macca played A Hard Days Night and Love Me Do last night in Fresno. Haven't heard them yet.

Steve, great to hear that you got to see the show and thanks for the report. I had the chance to watch videos of the Fresno show except for the very end and it was an excellent show. Looks like Paul made a few changes in his show compared with last year's.

Tribute for John (I suppose Mike?), plus he loves the song (sang it some sports event)....*Love Me Do*, was a tribute for George Martin....

There is nothing wrong with Paul doing(I am refraining from using the term singing) songs primarily written by John as long as Paul doesn't "reclaim" them as his own or primarily his own. Paul had a lead singing role in AHDN anyway and now he is doing all of the song. Up to 2002, there was no one in the world more qualified to sing a "John" Beatles song than Paul. Now there is no one in the world more qualified to do a John Beatles song than Paul!

Yeah, I don't care who they're written by, really, as long as they sound good. (Well, that doesn't include FourFiveSeconds.)

I'd love to hear Paul do She Said She Said, Tomorrow Never Knows, etc. After all, they are Beatles songs and he was a Beatle. Why should Siouxsie Sioux get to do Dear Prudence, but not Paul? Between Ringo and Paul, we should get a chance to hear the entire catalog, including Taxman, Inner Light and the rest of George's songs.

Does Paul ever give attribution to John in his concerts or does he just let people think songs like AHDN or Kite or cowritten songs like I've got a feeling etc are pure McCartney?

They are Beatles songs, not John songs or Paul songs or George songs or Ringo songs. They didn't give ownership when they did them live as a band. When people do covers songs, they rarely say "Here's a Beatle song written by John." They'll just say, "Here's a Beatles song." I may be wrong, but when George did "In My Life" as part of his 1974 tour, I don't think he said, "Here's a John song." I think he just played it without saying anything.

But Paul doesn't just do that. In a printed interview in like 2013 he infamously had to "reclaim" "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite." With Sir George gone, I am waiting for an announcement in print from Paul on AHDN for instance since it was the biggest surprise on the current tour. Many of us are still reeling that Paul was upset with Mark Lewisohn who has pretty much concluded that John and Paul were equals and each essential for the magic that was The Beatles. If Paul doesn't like that conclusion then that can only mean that he felt that he was the Beatles which is pure revisionism.

I don't remember if George did. Ringo has. John did when he sang ISHST. There's no law saying he has to. But when you do a Beatles tribute show where two thirds of the songs were written, co-written or otherwise contributed to by one guy, it's only appropriate. Especially when you know that otherwise people will assume you wrote them. I don't post much anymore as I don't like to argue with super fans. I don't care to argue in person much less on the Internet. But when you put fandom aside for a moment you see that if most of ones concert is comprised of songs that were cowritten or written by one guy its appropriate to give a shout out. Paul knows concert goers will walk away thinking he wrote AHDN, Kite etc. and it feels like stealing to me. I don't need to win this argument but I guess I just can't stand Paul and his narcissism any more and that's why I stopped posting.

There is no point in anyone bringing up George in 1974, or John with Elton John doing ISHST, or Siousxsie Sioux...or any other group who does a couple of "Beatles Cover Songs". That's just dumb. Because the whole thing here is that in Paul's case he is harboring some kind of desire to establish himself as Chief Beatle... or THE BEATLES. Paul is coming across as the guy who did it all, sang 'em all, wrote 'em all... or at the very least, the guy who contributed to every idea. That is just not an issue with other singers mentioned, but Paul McCartney is concerned about his lasting legacy. To the newest younger generations, they are growing up only under Paul's spell... and while I'm grateful that Paul is still around and tireless, and keeps performing ... I wish he would allow John a bigger piece of the pie, like he used to before John died and then became "deified".

I generally agree with you sayne-Paul shouldn't need permission, and I personally like when he takes on John Lennon, George Harrison and once even Ringo (Yellow Submarine snip). But saying nothing takes on a bit of who wrote what to younger fans, and because we know Paul has an ego the size of Jupiter and I wouldn't put it pass him to play dumb. But at the end of the day, no one can keep the spirits of John and George alive in music better than Paul, Ringo or the sons. When Dhani covers his Dad he kills it. Why not??? Maybe a cool way for Paul to get around it is to sing their solo songs. He's done both ATMP and GPAC in concert, how about What is life and Whatever Gets You Through the Night? I think it is safe that no one can accuse him of stealing credit on these. But hell, adding Hard Day's Night AND Love Me Do is interesting.

I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I didn't know who wrote what until I read John's Hit Parader's interview in '71 where he answered "Who wrote What?"
"Who have eyes will clearly see, and on one could disagree, the treasure of the world, I child watching it grow. And all the love will bring unknown delight".
That's the fun part of the Beatles. Learning more about them.

Here is a clip of Paul doing both "Here, There, and Everywhere", followed by "Maybe I'm Amazed". I had heard prior to watching that he was just horrible singing the first song, but when I watched this clip I thought he got by more decently than I'd heard. --- However, "Maybe I'm Amazed" is just achingly embarrassing, and very sad. Maybe I'm Amazed at how Paul can still perform this song when it's painfully obvious he JUST CANNOT SING IT ANYMORE. I gave Paul the benefit of the doubt when he bombed out at the recent 'Saturday Night Live' Anniversary Show... but this one is maybe even worse. Just very, very tragic. I cannot believe that his closest friends aren't telling Paul to stop. And can it be that Paul himself is blind and deaf to his limitations?

We talked about this on the Things We Said Today we taped yesterday and I'll repeat it here: Maybe I'm overwhelmed by McCartney mania but I thought the show was quite good overall. Yeah, I heard the vocal flubs, but the guy is in his 70s. Hell, even Tony Bennett has bad moments.

Yeah, I heard the vocal flubs, but the guy is in his 70s. Hell, even Tony Bennett has bad moments. Hey Steve... now I sort of feel differently. I just played this clip for my girlfriend, who as a professional singer is extremely judgmental. She didn't think Paul was that bad (or at least not as I was making it sound). She still wishes he would get some voice lessons to compensate for some of the problems he has at this age... but I have to say, I too thought it was not as bad as it first hit me. You know, we two have never seen Paul together yet, and we intend to get tickets (though it will probably via Ebay later on). While watching this clip again (and others, like "A Hard Day's Night") I was just overcome by the emotion of seeing Paul still entertaining us, and having my partner with me too. When I heard Paul do AHDN I really got goose pimples, mainly because it was another rare case of getting to see a Beatle doing another classic that I have never seen live by any of them before! Just seeing Paul coming out on stage and still looking vital and "Beatle-ish" was a charge in itself! So yeah ... now I feel I want to take some of it back. My girlfriend said it best.. "you just have to accept that he's singing like this at this point in his life, and go with it and enjoy it as he is now". I have often viewed it that way myself in the past, actually ... but I guess sometimes I get caught in the middle by expecting it to be different, when it really is not. I occasionally become of two minds about it. If we take it for how it is and know it's still out Paul, just older... it's all good.

Paul should just hire Stevie Riks to do ALL the lead vocals, then all four Beatles are open game, and Paul can just play his Hofner, guitar or piano.
I say it jokingly, but it would probably be very cool. When Riks get serious he is phenomenal.

I say it jokingly, but it would probably be very cool. When Riks get serious he is phenomenal. That would be wild and brilliant Mike if Paul brought on a singer who sounds close to him but Paul stays in the band! It is like Chicago tours now with a guy who sounds like Peter Cetera and Journey tours with a guy that sounds like Steve Perry but in those cases those respective singers split. Other "Oldies" bands do that like Lynyrd Skynyrd which sadly had to that, bring in a brother of the deceased lead singer. Paul would make history as he would still be in the band playing bass, piano, electric guitar, etc. and giving smiling "thumbs-ups" while the other guy sings lead vocal. And hopefully he looks like Paul! Of course, he could be called Billy Shears! MikeV, brilliant idea and win-win for us all! Paul is till right there in the mix but we don't have to grimace at hoarse-tattered or electronically "sweetened" lead vocals!
