Here's what Mike Love is saying from his Facebook page. Yikes! 50 Years ago today, Capitol Records released The Beach Boys ground breaking Album "Pet Sounds". I have a personal fondness for this record in so far as not only did I contribute to the writing and singing, but also I remember suggesting the album title "Pet Sounds" to my cousin Brian. Together we presented "Pet Sounds" to Carl Engemann our A&R representative at Capitol Records.
We knew the music was special but none of us could foresee how highly regarded this piece of music would become. For it to be hailed as one of the top albums of the modern era is a huge honor.
My favorite thing in our recording career has been co-writing songs with cousin Brian. I feel blessed to be a part of creating such great music for The Beach Boys. My role is primarily lyricist. Tony Asher beautifully crafted the majority of the lyrics on Pet Sounds. Tony deserves tremendous praise for the brilliant sensitivity that he contributed to "Pet Sounds".
I am also grateful to Al Jardine that he persisted in his mission to have The Beach Boys record "Sloop John B". At Al's suggestion, Brian created the brilliant track and arrangement that we have been performing for five decades.
The second half of our live performances consist of several songs from the "Pet Sounds" record which is preceded by a cleverly crafted video created by Noven Jaisi.
No musical experience or moment in our show could be more emotionally touching than having Carl Wilson's incredible performance (via video) singing "God Only Knows". They say our souls are immortal and it seems as if when we back-up Carl and hear him sing "God Only Knows", it has a timeless quality. His physical presence is no longer with us but he has left us with something immortal, eternal, everlasting. Even Sir Paul McCartney has said many times that "God Only Knows" is his favorite song!
It's an incredible honor to have "Pet Sounds" consistently ranked as one of the best albums of all time. I'll leave the hyperbole to the press. To me, the experience of creating the record may well have been the group’s finest effort. Happy Birthday "Pet Sounds".
Peace & Love - ML

Peace & Love - ML Jeez, why doesn't he just say it was all his idea and Brian added the finishing touches?

Jeez, why doesn't he just say it was all his idea and Brian added the finishing touches? LOL! Has Mike Love gone to the Paul McCartney School of Diminishing the Contributions of John Lennon? Brian is still alive and can theoretically defend himself although he is a frail soul. I always read Mike Love was cynical about Pet Sounds, that it was, "messing with the formula" of hit songs about surfing, cars and girls. I am amazed he at least gave Tony Asher so much credit! I had read that Love hated him too!

Jeez, why doesn't he just say it was all his idea and Brian added the finishing touches? Let's ask The Wrecking Crew who was behind Pet Sounds.......Cue the video..... I nabbed orchestra tickets for Brian, Al and Blondie in the Beacon Theater. I am bringing the missus-she saw the charge and I said "I know you like the Beach Boys"...she said, "but this says Brian..." I interrupted and said "no this is the real guys to see". I saw the reunited group there a couple of years ago, but to see Pet Sounds in its entirety excites me more than paying $200 plus to see Paul McCartney screaming "now all the people on the left sing..." on a video screen in a football stadium. Mike Love is a tool.

Saw Brian do "Pet Sounds" the first time around. It's a religious experience.

I absolutely love Pet Sounds so I will not let Mike Love ruin it for me. Mike Love was part of the album, his voice is all over the place, and he probably did help write some of the songs(or contributed to the process) but we have all read books and interviews going back to the 1960's that he thought Brian was getting to "far out" or "Messing with the formula" with PS. PS was made despite Love's objections!
I had second row seats at the Chicago Auditorium to see Brian Wilson do SMiLE with that wonderful band of his. It was magical! The first set was deep cuts both Beach Boys and Brian solo. The second set was SMiLE in its entirety and the Third set was that amazing collection of monster Beach Boys number 1's and Top Ten songs, maybe also Brian's "Love and Mercy"(that was performed either first set or third).
I would love to experience a complete live Pet Sounds and too bad Carl wasn't alive although wasn't he a Mike Love pawn?
MikeV we want photos and details! I mean seeing Brian Wilson do Pet Sounds live is not as cool as seeing James McCartney live but it is close!
